CARLSBAD -- Carlsbad Unified School District trustees will consider a proposal tonight to rent temporary classrooms in preparation for the upcoming renovation at Carlsbad High School.
If approved by the governing board during its regular meeting, the 13 new relocatable trailer classrooms and two portable restroom buildings will be placed near the old football field to provide teaching areas for students and instructors during three years of construction. The public meeting will be held in the Carlsbad City Council chambers at 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive.
The $83 million renovation at the high school is one of six planned projects in the district set to be completed over the next five years. Voters approved the sales of $198 million in school construction bonds last November. The district sold $40 million in bonds last week to finance planning and the first phases of construction.
The three-year rental from William Scottsman Inc. will cost $320,900. Each classroom will rent for $300 a month. Delivery, installation and removal will cost $96,500. The two portable restrooms will rent for $1,007 monthly, and set-up and removal will cost an additional $16,476.
Seven existing relocatable classrooms near the south end of campus will be moved to the same area near the football field. Another six relocatable classrooms already on campus are beyond repair and will be removed as part of the operation.
Under the same contract, William Scottsman Inc. also will provide a portable classroom at Aviara Oaks Middle School during construction of a permanent classroom building there. The one-year agreement will cost a total of $20,322, making the total contract price $341,222.

It seems like the district would save hundreds of thousands of dollars getting that structure up first and transfer the students to the new high school until CHS is complete. The board will never make rational decisions.
