Chargers Scouting Report: At New England Patriots
By: MIKE SULLIVAN - Associated Press | ∞
Kickoff: 5:15 p.m. at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
Series: New England leads 18-14-2. The Patriots won the last meeting, 24-21, in the AFC divisional playoffs Jan. 14, 207 at San Diego.
Player to watch: QB Tom Brady
There's no better clutch quarterback in the game than the 30-year-old Brady, who has won three Super Bowl rings and guided 24 game-winning fourth-quarter drives in his eight-year career. His most recent game-winning drive came in January, when the Patriots rallied from 11 points down to beat the Chargers in a playoff game. His overall playoff record sits at 12-2. He's also one of the game's most durable quarterbacks, having started the Patriots' last 109 games (counting playoffs). Only Green Bay's Brett Favre (258) and Indianapolis' Peyton Manning (157) have longer current streaks. Brady also shines from a statistical standpoint, having thrown for more than 3,500 yards in each of the last five seasons and throwing between 23 and 28 touchdown passes in each of those years. Brady has 150 career touchdown passes, third in Patriots history behind Steve Grogan (182) and Drew Bledsoe (166). He got off to a good start this season by completing 22-of-28 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns against the New York Jets.
Offense
WR Randy Moss is rejuvenated ---- at least he was on opening day when he caught nine passes for 183 yards and a touchdown against the Jets in his New England debut. The yardage was the third best output in team history, and Moss' 51-yard touchdown reception was the 20th scoring catch of his career of at least 50 yards. If Moss can stay motivated, he could regain his throne as the league's top wideout. Moss isn't the only new target on the team ---- Donte' Stallworth was signed as a free agent and Wes Welker was acquired from Miami. RB Laurence Maroney had 745 yards as a rookie and seems poised for a 1,000-yard rushing season. He ran for 72 yards against the Jets. The Patriots offensive line is led by Pro Bowl T Matt Light. Starting G Stephen Neal is a San Diego High alumnus.
Defense
The Patriots are missing two of their stalwarts but had little trouble limiting the Jets to 227 total yards and accumulating five sacks. DT Richard Seymour, who has made five consecutive Pro Bowl appearances, is on the physically-unable-to-perform list with a knee injury and S Rodney Harrison, the former Charger, is serving a four-game suspension and has admitted the punishment is for using HGH (human growth hormone). But plenty of talented players are on the field, led by ILB Adalius Thomas, the former Baltimore standout signed as a free agent, and CB Asante Samuel, who had 10 interceptions last season to tie for the NFL-high with Denver's Champ Bailey. OLB Mike Vrabel had 2 1/2 sacks in the opener, and DE Jarvis Green added two. The Patriots have plenty of veteran guile and leadership from ILB Tedy Bruschi and reserve LB Junior Seau, the former Chargers star and Oceanside High graduate now in his 18th NFL season.
Noteworthy
Ellis Hobbs set an NFL record with a 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Jets. It was Hobbs' second career kickoff return for a score. ... New England coach Bill Belichick registered his 125th career regular-season victory last week against the Jets, joining Washington's Joe Gibbs (163), Seattle's Mike Holmgren (160) and Denver's Mike Shanahan (140) as active coaches with 125 or more career wins. ... Second-year K Stephen Gostkowski owns a postseason record that his predecessor, former playoff hero Adam Vinatieri, doesn't ---- Gostkowski's 50-yard field goal against the Chargers in the 2007 playoffs was the longest postseason field goal in New England history.

Phil wrote on Sep 12, 2007 5:58 AM:Patriot nation would like to thank the Chargers, LT and Merriman in particular, for providing additional bulletin board material to the Patriots this week. It's great when LT blasts BB through the media, but it would be a better idea for the Chargers if they kept thier mouths shut the whole week leading up to the game.
scottdee wrote on Sep 12, 2007 7:20 AM:The Patsies got caught taping the Jets defensive signals but what about all the games where they got away with it? Green Bay caught them last year and Steelers coach Tomlin said where there's smoke there's fire. I've said for a couple of year's now that, without a good kicker (Vinatieri), this team would not have won any Super Bowls. Now that Bellichik's true genius has been exposed (a good kicker and covert signal stealing) I wonder if they would have even made the playoffs in those Super Bowl years? Anybody beside me think they should get a more severe penalty than a fine and/or loss of draft picks? Also, I hope the Chargers rookies who want to score points with their veteran teammates can locate Ellis Hobbs on special teams and "introduce" themselves to him. If I recall he was the primary "dancer" after last year's playoff game.
Bobby wrote on Sep 12, 2007 8:15 AM:Just maybe all this spy junk will distract them enough for us to steal the win. Jammer will still need the game of his life. Would it be nice to see Samuel in a Charger uni next year, never happen. AJ just does not get it. It's been 46 years and never a top all pro corner? AND this is a passing league,,,,,,,,,,,, NUTS

ChargerNation wrote on Sep 12, 2007 9:55 AM:We know the Chargers are doing good when the nation and the beltway media finally focuses on them as much as they do the Patriots or other sentimental favorites, causing fans like Phil to get a little bit uppity.

Joe wrote on Sep 12, 2007 10:59 AM:Hats off to our Chargers for a very tough and determined win against a ferocious Bears defense. Our defense (Jamal "The Wall" and company) was amazing stopping them on 3 consecutive tries for 2 yards before turning it over to us on donws. That was a championship-caliber effort! DuhBears' fatal flaw was trying to use a safety to cover all-world Gates. Give Norv and his staff credit for recognizing their coverage scheme and exposing and exploiting it to a victory plus a little trickery by LT passing to counteract their over-empasis in stopping him from running all over them like in the video which he would have done without 9 in the box the whole game. Should we now put an * next to the superbowl victories by the Patsies since they have been exposed as reprehensible cheaters? It will be interesting to see the spin their coach will try to use with the commissioner. I wonder if he is going to wear that old, dirty and UGLY hooded sweatshirt to the big meeting. I would like to see our Chargers exact revenge and destroy them on their own field with no trash talking and (finally) display our (apparently) more disciplined and mature character and simply take care of business. We will need a lot of pressure on Brady and a great effort by our secondary to shut down Randy Moss (maybe cutting his Afro made him lighter and faster) and their other receivers. We will also need for VJ, Floyd and Buster to step up big time and make some huge catches. At least they won't have to worry about HGH Rodney Harrison making big hits on them over the middle. Merrimonster needs to make his presence felt and I would love to see a couple of interceptions by Weddle and company. Stuff Hobbs on kickoffs and let's see Mity Mite Sproles dash and dart for some great returns. I found it interesting that Norv did not show all his cards against duhBears and has a few tricks up his sleeve for the Patsies This will be THE regular season game of the year with subplots galore. We beat them on their field 2 years ago and can do it again. Can anybody say 2-0? GO CHARGERS!!!
Phil wrote on Sep 12, 2007 11:17 AM:So the Pats cannot use camcorders to spy on hand signals. Are binoculars banned? Maybe you can get the NFL to add a new rule: 'No looking at the opponents hand signals.' That would definately give the Chargers a better chance to win. What is the precedent for situations like this? Oh there isn't one. I'm sure this is the first time it's ever happened (not). The Pats broke the rules, I think losing a 6th or 7th round pick is fair.

I wonder what the comissioner will think is "fair" (regarding a penalty)? A second or third round perhaps? Enjoy being under the microscope the rest of the season. Lastly, you BARELY got by a Charger team having a very bad day last January. As I recall, the last time the Chargers traveled to your house, your boys got smoked!-
flash19sd wrote on Sep 12, 2007 1:29 PM:Hey Phil, never happened before? You must be an East Coast transplant. What if I told you it DID happen before, right here in San Diego, in a playoff game, causing a Hall of Fame QB to throw 5 picks (4 to the same guy on defense), to a team playing without their starting QB, starting WR, and starting Hall of Fame RB, and the NFL swept the allegations under the rug? 1979 Divisional Playoff Game Houston @ San Diego. Houston safety Vernon Perry intercepted HOF QB Dan Fouts 4 times all by himself (they weren't deflections, he jumped the routes) while Houston was without leading WR Ken Burroughs, starting QB Dan Pastorini, and HOF RB Earl Campbell. Go back to back to Boston, you chowder head!
scottdee wrote on Sep 12, 2007 1:40 PM:If anyone wants a real laugh, go over the the Entirely Support Patriots Network (ESPN)'s chat room regarding "video-gate". They are saying everybody does it so why the fuss? I'm sure all the Patriot apologists on ESPN will spend the week making the same case. And with regard to their penalty for getting caught, why take FUTURE draft picks for an incident (likely more) that happened in the PAST and PRESENT? I say forfeit the Jets game, fine Kraft at least $100,000, suspend Bellichik for the next Jets game (if not more), AND take away 1st day draft picks for the next 3 years. Think they'll straighten up and fly right after that? I mean, if the mantra among coaches is "win now" what's to stop them from doing this again this year if the penalty is in the future? That's almost like saying, it's OK for you to rob that bank today but we're gonna put you in jail for it 10 years from now.
ECBT wrote on Sep 12, 2007 2:43 PM:Bulletin board material? Are you expecting LT's honest comments to urge your Pats to victory the same way "the commercial" did for da Bears? I wouldn't bet the house on it. The "Raider Nation" resides in someplace called the "black hole", otherwise most recently known as the basement.
Phil wrote on Sep 12, 2007 4:02 PM:Hey flash19sd, I agree with you! If you read my last post slowly you will notice this: (not)...... And this Patriot fan says we broke the rules and should be punished. A 6th or 7th round draft pick is appropriate for this crime. Let's face it, even without a video camera the Patriots employees (and any team for that matter) still have eyes and can see the hand signals unless they are hidden in which case the video camera isn't much help anyway..... And finally ECBT, here is a little help if you are still confused. The following is now posted on the Patriots Bulletin Board:...... "I think that the Patriots live by the saying `If you're not cheating, you're not trying.' I think they live off that statement, and nothing surprises me really," Tomlinson said... Thank you LT, just in case the Patriots need a little extra motivation... I expect a great game on Sunday night, may the best team win.-

TX-Bolt wrote on Sep 12, 2007 7:02 PM:Who cares if the the pats and their camera crew are upset about LT's comments. Who really cares if that is what will make the PATS play harder then invite all your playes, managers, owner etc. to read this...YOU ALL ARE CLASSLESS AS WAS DISPLAYED BY THE CONDUCT OF YOUR PLAYERS AFTER THE WIN IN SAN DIEGO....REMEMBER WE COULD HAVE DONE THE SAME WHEN WE BROKE YOUR WINNING STREAK AT YOU HOME....WE COULD OF DONE THE SAME WHEN WE BROKE UP INDI's WINNING STREAK IN INDI...WE DID NOT. PLEASE DO NOT EVEN INSULT US BY SAYING SM CELEBRATION DURING THE GAME AFTER A BIG PLAY JUSTIFIES YOUR PLAYERS TAUNTING THE OTHER TEAM AFTER THE GAME ON THE FIELD AND IN THE LOCKER ROOM...PATS PLAYERS EVEN WENT SO FAR AS TO STAND OUTSIDE THE CHARGERS LOCKER ROOM AND HEARL INSULTS AT THE CHARGERS TEAM AFTER THE GAME...AFTER THE GAME ON THE WAY TO THEIR LOCKERS THEY WERE CAPTURED ON TAPE HURLING INSULTS AT CHARGERS .... REMEMBER ONCE AGAIN WE COULD HAVE ACTED THE SAME WHEN we won at YOUR HOUSE AND BROKE YOUR HOME WININNG STREAK AND WHEN WE BROKE IND"S WINNING STREAK..WE DID NOT.....BUT WHEN YOUR TEAM GOT A WIN IN SAN DIEGO LOOK HOW THEY ACTED. THEY CROSSED THE LINE BIG TIME....... AND NOW YOU ALL ARE CONFIRMED AS BEING DISHONEST ALSO. SO THERE COME SUNDAY EVENING BRING IT ON...PLEASE READ THIS AND PLAY REALLY HARD BECAUSE I AM SURE THE BOLTS WILL PLAY HARD ALSO.....
Phil is a Cryin' wrote on Sep 12, 2007 7:24 PM:Hey Phil, if bulletin board material is really so important to the outcome of the game, I think the Chargers will win by a longshot based on their classless acts and comments after the playoff game. That being said, if your team really needs that kind of crap to get them fired up for this game, the Chargers should blow them out just as bad as they did the last time in New England.

kevin wrote on Sep 13, 2007 4:53 AM:this blog is pathetic and you team relying on the likes of norv turner a great offensive coordinator but ... coach and how quickly you guys turn your backs on harrison who was the rock of your defenses for years . the bottom line is this there is no difference between watching the hand signals and writing them down or recording them and if bellichick is doing it i am sure there are plenty of other coaching and scouting staffs doing the same thing .... now keep in mind that whenever bellichick plays and beats a top team the following week his defensive marvels are repeated by the coach of that teams next opponent .. so if bellichick does cheat he is not the only one people are just jealous that the pats are stocked on offense and defense and they know they can not compete with the pats whether they read hand signals thru binoculars or throough a camera .... 40 pts a game and not the chargers or anyone else are going to be able to control them... the only times last week the pats were not bale to score pts were b/c they hurt themselves not b/c the jets stopped them ,........... keep that in mind chargers fans and we will see sunday afternoon let lt do his talking on the field b/c it sounds to me he is quite the sore loser..........\ go pats
Tx_BOLT wrote on Sep 13, 2007 8:44 PM:Kevin you need help with that myopia problem....There is a big difference between immitating what one team does that is successful and actually making tape on the signals called to make adjustments real time and in the future man. That there is againts the rules...You are not allowed to video tape another team like that...Where will it end..do we put hidden mikes and cameras in locker rooms..do we try to steal oops my bad secure game books from the other team...Now check this out I watched Harrison when he was just a scrub riding pine on our beach to his development / evolution into one of the most feared man in the league...My most prized possesion is a life size photo of Harrison standing on the tip of his toes staring into Big old Kevin Gogans Visor man.. gogan was well over 6-7 dude...that there is typical of the player Harrison...All this said he took HGH..that tanishes what he was in my mind man..He admitted it....Now SM is almost in the same boat...The only difference is he said it was a tainted product..up to today he has never admitted therwise and there is no additinal evidence to the contary.hard to believe but feasible when you consider he never failed a test previously and since..All the BS about Sunday evening..Hell bring it on we did it once up there and we can do it again...It will be a hell of a game GO BOLTS...
Phil wrote on Sep 14, 2007 5:57 AM:Tx_Bolt- It's going to be a great game Sunday night. If the Patriots legally watch the San Diego coaches with eyes and binoculars and take notes, do you think that will have an impact on the game? I think every team probably does it. Sure video would definately help and is cheating, but even without video I'm sure it will be beneficial especially at halftime. I wish the game was at 1pm I'm so fired up for it. May the best team win. No matter who wins, I predict another playoff showdown.
TX_BOLT wrote on Sep 14, 2007 5:27 PM:Phil....I agree its a fine line between the legal way of scouting and the illegal way of scouting. The Pats actions fell on the illegal side because the rules as written expressely forbade those actions.....Does it tarnish there ring? Not in my mind...Man when Brady stepped on that field last year I felt the same way I did when ELway use to face off against the Bolts..That is the highest compliment that I can give to another QB man...That man (Elway) kicked our a$$ repeatedly.. THis year its a New Pats team.... they are now viewed as the most talented team with the Free agents they picked up....They are going to be real hard to beat at home...I hope this week was not to much of a distraction because quite honestly I want to see the best (PATS) against my team that I think is one of the best in the league this year. If we can go to Indy and stop their run to a perfect season...then we can do this also...but its not going to be a walk in the park....It is going to be a hell of a game...Hoping for no injuries and may the best team win.
TX-Bolt wrote on Sep 16, 2007 8:22 PM:PATs are the better team. We have some work to do. Hopefully next week against GB we will make some strides n order to compete with the likes of PATs and Indy. Good show PATs you are the team to beat in the AFC.
Phil wrote on Sep 17, 2007 3:25 AM:I was expecting a much closer game. Turns out LT really should have kept quiet on the buildup to the game. There is no need to give extra incentive like that, and then go out an get spanked on the field. The Chargers have alot of work to do, but I expect there could well be a rematch in the playoffs. The Patriots are clearly the best team in the NFL once again. This is Patriot Nation.-
