Patriots dominate rematch with Chargers
By: MIKE SULLIVAN - Staff Writer | ∞
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Chargers can continue to debate who should have won last January's playoff game if they so desire, but it was very clear which team was superior eight months later.
The rematch was as one-sided as a garden hose against a forest fire as the New England Patriots scorched the Chargers 38-14 before a Sunday night national television audience and 68,756 fans at Gillette Stadium.
The Patriots (2-0) were red hot in the first half, doing whatever they wanted on offense and accepting charity gifts from Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers in jumping to an insurmountable 24-point halftime lead.
"New England is an outstanding football team," Chargers coach Norv Turner said. "They played at a real high level. We certainly weren't able to match. It is something we have to step back, look at and regroup."
The Chargers sit at 1-1 as they lick their wounds. In a game billed as a battle of potential Super Bowl contenders, one team was indeed super while the other appeared super overrated.
"It's a humbling game," said Rivers, who was intercepted twice and lost a fumble. "We thought we were going to come in here and win and play well, and we do just the opposite. This is a good old-fashioned whipping we took."
The Patriots set the tone immediately as they came out slinging with a no-huddle offense. Operating out of the shotgun, New England quarterback Tom Brady threw on every down, hitting his first four passes and completing 6-of-7 overall on the seven-play, 69-yard drive.
A 34-yard pass play in which Wes Welker eluded Drayton Florence moved the Patriots to the Chargers' 7-yard line. On the next play, a defensive breakdown allowed tight end Benjamin Watson to cruise all alone to the right corner of the end zone and easily catch a 7-yard scoring pass.
The Chargers' offense then took the field, and Rivers made a poor throw on the team's first play.
Patriots linebacker Rosevelt Colvin intercepted Rivers' badly underthrown ball intended for Craig Davis, giving New England the ball on the Chargers' 24.
"I've made that throw a million times, up and over the linebacker," said Rivers, lamenting his first mistake of the night.
The Chargers got a temporary reprieve when Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski was wide right on a 41-yard field-goal attempt. But they were unable to get a first down on their second drive, and when the Patriots got the ball back they mixed in some runs by Laurence Maroney as they moved 75 yards on 10 plays.
New England went up 14-0 when Randy Moss found a crease in the deep zone between safety Clinton Hart and cornerback Quentin Jammer and caught a 23-yard touchdown pass with 3:55 remaining in the quarter.
While Brady was throwing for 151 yards in the opening quarter -- the highest first-quarter output of his career -- Rivers and the Chargers were struggling to get into a rhythm. Just as it looked like the Chargers were getting in sync by reaching the New England 33, Rivers was sacked by Colvin and stripped of the ball.
Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork recovered the ball at the 44. The Patriots soon tacked on three more points on Gostkowski's 24-yard field goal.
But more disaster was looming. On third-and-one from the New England 37, Rivers tried to hit Malcom Floyd, but was intercepted by Patriots linebacker Adalius Thomas, who cruised 65 yards in the other direction to give New England a 24-0 advantage with 5:17 left in the first half.
"I thought I could get it up and away from him, and then he makes a play and scores," Rivers said. "All I talk about, what I've always lived by personally, is no turnovers and take care of the football."
The Chargers staged an impressive drive to begin the second half, moving 72 yards on 16 plays and scoring on a fourth-down, 1-yard pass from Rivers to fullback Lorenzo Neal. But when the Patriots got the ball, they struck again with Moss scoring his second touchdown of the contest by roasting Drayton Florence on a 24-yard catch.
That was Brady's third touchdown throw of the contest.
Brady was a highly efficient 25-of-31 passing for 279 yards. Overall, New England had 407 yards of total offense, more than double the Chargers' output of 201.
"They made some plays and kept coming at us," outside linebacker Shawne Merriman said. "They didn't play at the same level. They kept turning it up. That's what good teams do. Right now, we need to get better as a team, and we will."
The first halves can only get better. The Chargers scored in the first half of every game last season. They have yet to score before halftime this season.
"It was pretty tough, probably one of the toughest I can remember," said running back LaDainian Tomlinson, "especially with the way they started offensively and the way we started. We couldn't really respond to anything they were doing, and it kind of got away from us early.
"I said all along that this was only the second game and this game wouldn't make or break either team. But it's certainly disappointing just by the way the game turned out. It thought it would be a little bit closer, but they proved to be a much better team today."

Where's Marty? wrote on Sep 16, 2007 11:38 PM:This team was completely unprepared to play, and the responsibility for that rests with GM A.J. Smith. So Smith didn't like Schottenheimer, mocked his pre-game inspirational speeches. But no Schottenheimer team would have shown up so flat as the Chargers did tonight. Fire A.J. Bring back Marty. Let Norv stay as coordinator if he wants, but get someone at the top who knows how to motivate.-

Grades: Head Coach: F Perhaps one of Marty's rah rah speeches (that purportedly players were "tuning out") was needed-arrogant of a team that has, to quote AJ Smith, accomplished NOTHING-to have tuned out. Bad game plan. Way to slow to adapt to their no huddle offense. Should have quckly called a time out and substituted our nickel package. Pathetic play calling! Where were the screens (only one called which was successful), draws, end arounds, shovel passes (these are the type of plays which slow down an overly aggressive defense) or reverses for varitey and forcing the defense to run sideline to sideline which tires them out. Bust as a #1 draft pick. He makes Sammy Davis look like an all pro. No coverage or ball skills. Drayton Florence + Cromartie: Ditto Jammer How can their tight end be wide open in the endzone for a touchdown? Offensive line: F Defensive line: F Rivers: D- Kasim Osgood: A+++ Replay showed one of best efforts I've ever seen on special teams; he ran past one guy around another, jumped over another and, with a very determined effort, knocked the ball loose for a fumble. Hopefully our Chargers will hear this wake up call, talk no more trash and get to WORK regrouping for the rest of the season. We are still 1-1 and this loss does not count in our division.-

Ric in Delaware wrote on Sep 17, 2007 5:22 AM:I just got back from a wasted trip to New England, not only did I have to put up with some really obnoxious Patriot fans, By the end of the night I was forced to agree with what I had been hearing since about 5pm in the afternoon. That the Chargers were going to get killed, and that the Chargers weren't in the same class as the Patriots. I was sitting next to a pretty decent Pat. fan and he admitted to me that he never thought it would be this easy, that he was sure it would be a 3 to 6 point game. I would like to make only 3 observations,1.In 17 games last year the CHARGERS LOST 3 GAMES BY A TOTAL OF 9 POINTS.It has only taken Norv 2 games to surpass that stat by 15 points.2. Say whatever you want about Marty{and I said plenty negative stuff during 2 playoff losses}he always had the team ready to play. I am not sure and will have to check but from the year they went 12-4 to last year I cant remember getting blown out by that many points. 3. Turner comes in as this big time offensive guru and quarterback coach, PHILLIP RIVERS LOOKED LIKE A DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS,this is the second game in a row where the highest scoring offense in the league last year has been held scoreless in the first half.I know I am panicking early but the warning signs are as plain as a 24 point really never in the game loss. As for Ted Cotrell I guess he was playing that new ZIP CODE DEFENSE, where when a Patriot receiver catches a ball there is a Charger defender in the same zip code. And I wasn't all that impressed with the defense, last week. Rex Grossman can make any defense look good, look at how close the Chiefs game was yesterday.AJ,now has HIS BOYS AT THE CONTROLS,I wonder what Dean Spanos thinks about the product AJ's boys put on the field last night. The only Charger who got it right was Ladainian Tomlinson,he said the game was going to be a barnburner, he just forgot to mention the Chargers would be in the barn while it was burning down. You got everything you wanted AJ,Marty out and your boys in. How are you enjoying it now.Norv Turner showed why he stinks as a head coach. Its just a shame he is going to waste a year of a very talented team to prove he ain't got it as a head coach. Like I said I am panicking early but to watch that team with so much to prove get absolutely manhandled in person was just embarassing. The comment I heard the most thruout the night from fans who really were not that bad was ,Why did AJ Smith hire someone who has proven he is not a good head coach, the only reply that I could give them that they could put in perspective, was that when it comes to football talent AJ's about a genius, when it came to the Head Coach he was just a little bit to arrogant, kind of like a guy named Belichick. Been a Charger fan for 44 years so this kind of stuff is nothing new,Just never thought when i became a fan I would still be waiting close to a half-century later for them to win another championship. I have no faith whatsoever in Turner , and will gladly I repeat gladly eat tons of crow for them to prove me wrong.-

scottdee wrote on Sep 17, 2007 8:03 AM:This defeat is alot easier to swallow than the playoff loss despite being dominated. And while there is some cause for concern, it's how you play at the end of the year that counts. Pats played agressively on both sides of the ball. SD's base defense is predicated on pressuring the passer so Pats ran at Phillips, away from Merriman, and threw quick passes, negating the pass rush. SD needed to be in their nickel and dime packages instead of their base defense on 1st down but Cottrell and Turner failed to adjust and Rivers kept turning the ball over. One thing that concerns me about Rivers is that other teams are starting to use his competitiveness against him. He blew a gasket after the playoff game, against the Bears on the blown offsides call, and he allowed Colvin to get in his head last night. He has to get a grip on his emotions.
Mitch wrote on Sep 17, 2007 8:28 AM:Somebody needs to slip Rivers a sedative just before the game to calm him down. Mistakes are going to be made, of course. But throwing a gimme interception on the first play of the game resulting in a quick touchdown for the Patriots was rather incredible. Then another pocket fumble. Then another interception. Then a complete lack of concentration after that. The defensive secondary needs work, too. Perhaps the Chargers can get new coaching and better players at those positions as well. Until then, we are looking at mediocrity.
Am I missing something wrote on Sep 17, 2007 8:45 AM:Let's see, you have third and one, the best running back trio in the league and you throw a pass? Does not make sense especially when Rivers is obviously not in sync with his receivers. Is Randy Moss "Untouchable"? Why didn't they shove him to disrupt his routes? Someone needs to tell the corners and safeties that football IS a contact sport.
Charles wrote on Sep 17, 2007 8:53 AM:Everyone relax...take a deep breath and realize this team is 1-1 and have played at least two of the top five defenses in the league. There are concerns but they are going to be fine...The one player who's going to have to get his head out is Rivers. He put the Chargers in a hole early and you just can't do that against the Pats. He wasn't fooled on any of his interceptions...they were just horrible passes. The Pats are going to move the ball but you have to answer them. Rivers basically gave them 14 points which is more like 28 when you don't answer points with points. They will be fine...too much character on this team not to...Long season...Pats got beat down during the season last year...the Colts went through a stretch last year where they couldn't stop anyone...right now the real problem is the offense...Turner has always been successful with his offenses...they will be better...one other thing that is being underestimated is the absencen of Eric Parker...he had a great season last year (save the playoff game)as Mr. Clutch on third down... Disappointing but not the end of the world and truth be told this may be the best thing to happen to them and the fans...stop all the looking ahead and just play the next game. Real fans won't panic now, concern is fine, but not panic...they will be fine...Do you think Bill B. panicked when the Chargers beat them down 41-17 a couple of years ago?...WE WILL SEE THEM AGAIN!

Zack wrote on Sep 17, 2007 9:51 AM:This loss shouldn't surprise anyone. I very much expected them to lose and I expected them to lose by a huge margin. The Chargers don't seem to have the ability to match up against the Patriot wide receivers. IMO, the Chargers secondary always has been an issue over the years and you add that with the unusually poor pass rush and the only hope the Chargers had of winning was to try to grind the game out offensively on the ground in an effort to keep their own defense off of the field. Of course that wasn't going to happen because the Chargers seem to be emphasizing the pass more than the run which was exactly what cost them the playoff game against the Patriots last year. I don't know what happened to the Charger offensive line, but IMO, they could not have played any worse than they did. Still, Tomlinson should have gotten the ball far more than he did and the Chargers should have just kept trying to run the ball. I have never been a big fan of Marty ball, but it is abundantly clear to me that Rivers is not yet capable of carrying the team to a win against the Patriots. As for all of the talking from Tomlinson and some of the other Chargers. They ought to just keep their collective mouths shut and play the game. They really do look weak when they don't keep their mouths shut. Team discipline seems to be one of the things the Chargers don't have. -

I honestly thought it would take you three years to screw this team up , not just two just weeks. We have some of the very best players in the NFL, ( LT, Loneal, Gates, OL, DL, etc ) let them play and do what they do best. Take the pressure off Rivers until he learns how to play in the NFL, and turn your studs loose! All the talk about who's a class guy and who not is another thing. I was taught that if you have nothing good to say about someone, say nothing. The class thing is let your play do the talking for you. The Patriots learned it years ago taught by the so-called class less Belichick. Talking is for undisciplined losers. Which brings be back to where I started this rant. Shut up and Play.

Pre-game it seems like the Charger fans had decided that the Chargers are the best team in the NFL. What a difference a day makes. You even have a discussion about making the super bowl? This is great entertainment. The bottom line is that the Chargers need to be smarter and keep the mouths shut on lead ups to big games. Do your talking on the field, Bolts. There is no reason to give your opponent extra incentive. LT's comments were rediculous, it doesn't matter if he was joking. Keep it in the locker-room, no comment the media to death. I still think you have a solid team with some major weaknesses (WR especially). I predict the Chargers finish with 11 or 12 wins, assuming the coaching staff starts to get it together.

Not to bash you guys, but for all the talk leading up to the game, the bolts did not look very well prepared, which is usually due to poor coaching. and 2. Trash talking before a game is usually a bad idea. I seem to recall an AFC championship game back in the 90's where the Pittsburgh Steelers were making superbowl rap videos between practices and then got their butts handed to them by... the Chargers. LT was saying before Sunday's game that if the bolts played the Pats 10 times, the bolts would win 9 of them.... someone should point out to LT that 9 times out of 10 the team that talks the most smack leading up to a game is usually the one to get smacked instead. Bolts trash talking and lack of respect before these games with the Pats is disturbing. Everyone says "but it's true" or "they'll win anyway" or "come on, he's classy. He can say that". Sad to say, but I think it will take some more bad losses before these players realize how much it helps the other team. The Chargers are extemely talented and extemely juvenile in their game preparation. Their arrogance in thinking they can say those things ("I was kind of only joking") before a game and it won't affect them is as arrogant as filming a defensive signal and thinking you won't get caught. I wonder if Mr. Classy decides he should just shut his mouth until he wins some BIG games. Memo to AJ, yes you have a good eye for talent but your arrogant attitude has cost us a great coach who has over 200 wins (you can't WIN in the post season unless you GET in the post season!) and unless things change drastically and quickly, we could be looking at 8-8 and no playoffs but at least we had "continuity" and your relationship was not "dysfunctional". Go smoke a cigar and contemplate the horrific egg your boy laid against the Pats. A Pop Warner coach, after realizing the opposition was going no-huddle with 3 and 4 receivers, would have immediately called (not "wasted" as it would have been masterfully used) a TIMEOUT and made an IMMEDIATE adjustment. Now I see why NOrvall has such a dismal record as a head coach. I am still on the bandwagon however and EXPECTING a righting of the ship and some serious improvements in coaching, play calling and execution by our entire team. THIS is the time to get 'r done while the season is young. GO CHARGERS! Game ball to Kasim Osgood for his SPECTACULAR play on the fumble he caused.-

I didn`t expect to go 16-0, we will learn from our mistakes & we will win enough games to make the playoffs & the football gods willing we will actually win in january. The odds makers have us 4 pt fav`s going into Lamboo field & then we`ll be 2-1. I agree with kevin send the front 7 & let the secondary cover the recievers

He gave the Chargers mostly C's, a couple of D's, and one B. If you didn't know who won the game and looked at the report card first you would think the Chargers had a mediocre game but still manage to win. The Chargers were HORRIBLE and deserved mostly F's for their lousy performance on National TV. I hope Norv Turner can get this team more motivated and better prepared like Marty did during the regular season but I have my doubts. Dean Spanos should of made Marty the General Manager and grumpy A.J. Smith the head coach so the arrogant Smith can show how easy it is to win regular season games, playoff games, and the Superbowl from the talented players he he put together.

RonBurgundy wrote on Oct 1, 2007 10:06 PM:A.J. Smith's decision making reeks of arrogance. Arrogance on the Jerry Jones level. I don't know how a semi-pro reject develops such a swollen head, but he has. The bottom line is - Norv is a great offensive mind, but a proven loser as a head coach. Marty has struggled mightily in the post season, but he commands and recieves respect, and players revere Norv as much as they do their local librarian. I hate to say this because it goes against most things that I beleive in, but if SD is going to lose this year, I hope they lose BIG, so that that POS prick A.J. Smith can see the error of his ways.-
