CARDIFF -- Chris Paccione, a physical education teacher at Cardiff School, has received a Governor's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports 2007 Spotlight Award.
The awards program, sponsored by the Blue Cross of California Foundation, recognizes teachers, principals, organizations, companies, events, parks programs and schools that represent the best efforts in the state to promote physical activity and fitness for California youngsters. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger congratulated the top award winners during a ceremony Tuesday in Los Angeles.
One of three teachers in the state honored by the council, Paccione earned a silver medal for leading the effort to create a room that offers fitness equipment for students and teachers at Cardiff School. She introduced the Get Fit, Don't Sit program, which allows students to take sports equipment home to be used by their families and friends, and created the Cardio Club, a running program with more than 400 students. She also received a grant to provide a salad bar to students and staff members, promoting healthier eating.
In addition to her medal, Paccione will receive $2,500 to be used to promote physical education at Cardiff School.
