Rain could fall this week

NORTH COUNTY -- As summer ends this week, the forecast may bring something a bit unexpected -- rain, thunderstorms, hail and even snow.

It's not as unusual as it may seem -- chilly low pressure from the eastern Gulf of Alaska and western British Columbia typically comes through this time of year, said National Weather Service forecaster Stan Wasowski. The system just happens to be stronger than normal, bringing what could be the strongest storm at this time of year in more than 20 years, forecasters said.

High temperatures are expected in the 60s and 70s throughout North County today. There is a 20 percent chance of scattered rain through early Thursday that could reach 50 percent late Thursday through Friday. Snow could fall at 6,000 feet.

Similar systems have in previous years dumped considerable rain, but it's difficult now to tell what will happen because the weather is developing so close, Wasowski said.

Though temperatures will cool, residents should avoid turning up their heaters because warm temperatures will return soon as Santa Ana season sets in, forecasters said.

"Let the sun do the heating ... don't go running around turning on the heat, you'll really regret it," Wasowski said.
