CARLSBAD -- Geena Davis, Academy Award-winner, Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee, will host a celebrity luncheon and auction at 11 a.m. Sept. 27 at the Four Seasons Resort Aviara.

The celebrity auction items will include dresses that Davis and Sharon Stone wore in films, designer purses, clothing, jewelry, artwork and trips to Hawaii.

Tickets are $75. Proceeds will go to Davis' nonprofit organization called SJ Los Angeles, which works to ensure that parents, TV and film executives and creators and the general public recognize the need for gender balance and varied portrayals in kids' entertainment.

NARFE chapter to meet Sept. 27

ESCONDIDO -- Palomar Chapter 455 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees will meet at 1 p.m. Sept. 27 in the auditorium of the Joslyn Senior Center, 210 E. Park Ave.

Melissa Green, veterans advantage coordinator for the Health Care Group, will speak on the availability of supplemental health care services and long-term care for veterans and/or their surviving spouses.

Take a hike at Daley Ranch

ESCONDIDO -- Free, guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch.

All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least a quart of water and wear a hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths younger than 18 must be with an adult. No pets are allowed.

    Free health fair planned

    Youth basketball league offered

    ESCONDIDO -- The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego will begin another season of boys and girls basketball in December.

    Drawing to benefit Artists Gallery

    Gourd art class offered

    ESCONDIDO -- The Baiamonte Gourd Farm will offer a gourd art class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 13. Participants can learn how to properly select, handle and clean gourds; mark and cut intricate details; clean the inside of the gourd; strengthen weak walls; and seal and apply a lasting finish.

    Local artist's works on display

    ESCONDIDO -- The Blue Mug Coffee Shop, 122 S. Kalmia, provides a venue for local artists to show their work. The featured artist for September is Lucinda Milks, who specializes in western art and portraits.

    After a lengthy career in public education, Milks has returned to art full time. During the 1980s, her work was shown at Frame World Gallery on Grand Avenue. For the past 25 years, her artistic focus has been western art, particularly American-Indian portraits. She mainly works in pastel.

    Friends of library to hold book sale

    St. Mary's to hold annual Luau

    Proposals sought for market management

    VISTA -- The city of Vista has issued a request for proposals for management and marketing of a farmers market. Information is posted on the city's Web site under the parks and community services department. Proposal packages will be accepted until 4 p.m. on Oct. 8.

    The city seeks to secure and retain a qualified market manager/operator to successfully operate the market at or above the current service level. The candidate must be either a certified producer or a nonprofit organization. Successful candidates shall be expected to comply with California Code of Regulations, Title III, Division 3, Chapter 1 Subchapter 4, Article 6.5, a copy of which is available online.

    Event to focus on global poverty

    ENCINITAS -- Dr. Ulrich Duchrow, professor at Heidelberg University in Germany, will speak on "Releasing the Grip of the Global Debt Economy" at 1 p.m. Oct. 7 at The Grauer School, 1500 S. El Camino Real. Jubilee USA Network and Jubilee Economics Ministries are joining with the Center for Global Awareness in Encinitas to sponsor this event, which will be preceded by a luncheon.

    Duchrow represents Kairos Europa, a group that advocates new approaches to deal with the injustices of poverty in the global community. The environment and the effects of globalization are among their concerns. Committed to a Biblical critique as shown in the message of the Jewish prophets and the Gospel of Jesus, Duchrow will outline new ways to see today's issues that result in poverty, underdevelopment and the instability that results in global terrorism.

    Grants available for arts projects

    CARLSBAD -- The city of Carlsbad's Cultural Arts Office is currently accepting applications for its annual Community Arts Grants program. Funds totaling $25,000 will be awarded in matching grants for cultural projects taking place within the city of Carlsbad in 2008. The grant application deadline is Oct. 29. Announcement of awarded grants will occur by Dec. 14.

    The Community Arts Grants program is designed to help strengthen local arts organizations and to provide cultural and artistic opportunities for Carlsbad citizens. The grants, which must be matched, are awarded to nonprofit organizations, schools and school-related organizations and to visual, media, literary and performing artists for projects taking place in Carlsbad. Individual artists and those arts organizations located elsewhere in San Diego County must have a Carlsbad nonprofit organization or school as a partner to host the proposed activity.

    Two Community Arts Grant Application Workshops will be held; new applicants are strongly urged to attend a workshop, including: 6 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Gowland Meeting Room at city's Dove Library, 1775 Dove Lane; and 6 p.m. Oct. 3 at in the Community Room at Cole Library, 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive.

    There are two categories of Community Arts grants; an applicant organization, school or individual may submit a proposal in only one category. "Organizations/Artist Partnerships" fund events, activities and projects presented for the general population. Grants usually range from $500 to $3,000, though there is no limit to the amount an applicant may request. "Arts Education" awards funds for school-based projects for kindergarten through 12th-grade students, and requests are limited to a maximum of $1,000. Past successful proposals have included: music festivals, concerts and residencies; play readings and free outdoor theater; visual arts demonstrations and mural projects; choreographer residencies; artist-led training seminars for teachers and a variety of school activities promoting student participation in the arts.

    Senior center offers rides

    CARLSBAD -- Carlsbad residents 60 years of age and older who cannot drive and are in need of transportation for medical appointments or grocery shopping can contact the Carlsbad Senior Center's Transportation Program for assistance. Transportation for medical appointments is provided Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Appointments must be made at 2 p.m. or later and end by 4:30 p.m. Service area is limited. Wednesday afternoons are reserved for grocery shopping at Stater Bros. The first Thursday afternoon of the month transportation is provided to go to Wal-Mart or Trader Joe's.     Home meal delivery available

    CARLSBAD -- The city of Carlsbad Senior Center has a state-funded program that provides nutritious hot meals for homebound seniors who live in Carlsbad, age 60 and older, and are unable to prepare their own meals.     Artists sought for holiday show

    Fire safety expo set for Sept. 29
