North San Diego County School News Briefs: Teachers to be saluted

SAN DIEGO -- Twenty-two North County teachers will be honored when they take part in the 17th annual "Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers" at 7 p.m. Oct. 6.
The Academy Awards-style event, to be held at the San Diego Civic Theatre, will be broadcast live on Cox Channel 4. A total of 50 teachers will be in the spotlight. Four county teachers of the year will be chosen to continue on to a state Teacher of the Year competition.

Taco brunch to benefit students
VISTA -- Arcadia Place, a retirement community at 1080 Arcadia Ave., will hold a Back-to-School Taco Brunch at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 27 to benefit needy young students. Rummage sale planned
ENCINITAS -- The Academic Council of the San Dieguito Academy Foundation will host a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 29, in the parking lot of San Dieguito Academy, at Melba and Nardo. All proceeds of the sale will benefit the school's award-winning speech and debate team.
Dental exams offered
NORTH COUNTY -- Starting this school year, California school districts must ask for proof that students beginning their first year in public school have been seen by a dentist. Check-ups completed within the 18 months prior to school entry meet the requirement. Certificates must be provided within 90 days after entrance into the first grade. Parents or caregivers may sign a waiver if they are unable to get a dental check-up for their child. The Vista Community Clinic Dental Department has added appointments to accommodate the new requirement for families who qualify. Tournament to benefit CHS dance team
CARLSBAD -- The Carlsbad High School dance program will hold its seventh annual golf tournament Oct. 15 at The Crossings at Carlsbad golf course.
The event will benefit expenses incurred by the Lancer Dancers and junior varsity Xcalibur dance teams throughout the year. The $175 tournament fee includes a round of golf, dinner in The Crossings' clubhouse and performances by the dance teams. A four-person team may sign up for a discounted fee of $650. Dinner only is $32.50. A portion of the donation is tax-deductible. Checks should be made out to CHS Dance Boosters and mailed to Marty Smith, 7151 Latitude Lane, Carlsbad, CA 92011.

Teachers' art workshops planned
CARLSBAD -- The 2007 CAPE Arts Integrated Education Workshop Series will continue Oct. 1 with "Perform It!"
The workshop, to be held from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. at Kelly Elementary School, 4885 Kelly Drive, is the second in a series of five teaching workshops designed to provide arts integrated teaching tools to teachers, teaching students, parents, grandparents and other community members concerned with the quality of education and the promotion of arts education.
"Perform It!" is sponsored by the Carlsbad Arts partnership and will teach the "how tos," philosophy and practice of transforming literature into performance and the classroom into a stage. Participants will learn how to create classroom magic using the elements of storytelling, puppetry, drama and rhythm instruments.
The workshop is free to Carlsbad Unified School District teachers. A $20 donation is requested of all others. Teachers from other districts and education students are particularly welcome. To reserve a seat, call (760) 434-6216 or go to http://www.carlsbadartspartnership.org.
Career conference for Latino boys set
SAN MARCOS -- About 600 Latino high school boys from throughout North County are expected to participate in the fourth annual Encuentros Education and Career Exploration Conference from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 6 at Palomar College
Titled "Your Future Begins Now," the conference is designed to heighten educational expectations among Latino boys. Workshops will feature professionals from various careers, including law, engineering, science, auto technology, chemistry, medicine, education and psychology. The event will include a continental breakfast, lunch, a career expo and one-on-one and group sessions led by prominent Latino males.

EHS 2008 50-Plus Picnic set
ESCONDIDO -- The site of Escondido High School's annual 50-Plus Picnic will be moved in 2008 from Felicita Park to Grape Day Park in downtown Escondido. The event is scheduled for May 17.
The picnic is open to people who graduated from the school 50 years and more ago and their families. This year, the event attracted more than 600 people. The 2008 committee, comprised of volunteers, began meeting in September. More volunteers are welcome. PHS food, supplies drive planned
POWAY -- Poway High School will hold its third annual Food and Supplies Drive benefiting members of the military and their families on Sept. 28. Donations will be distributed to needy active-duty members of the service and their families by Homefront San Diego, a nonprofit volunteer organization partnered with the Navy League of San Diego. Items can be dropped off at a spot to be located on Espola Road near the north parking lot of the football field of the school, or at the football field of the campus, 15500 Espola Road. Rummage sale to benefit San Pasqual High
ESCONDIDO -- A rummage sale to benefit San Pasqual High School, sponsored by the school's Parents' Club, will be held from 7 a.m. to noon Oct. 6 in the parking lot of the school, 3300 Bear Valley Parkway. Gently-used items will be collected in the student parking lot from 7 to 8 a.m. and 2 to 3 p.m. Oct. 1 through 5. For more information, call (760) 291-6000.
San Marcos College Expo planned
SAN MARCOS -- San Marcos and Mission Hills high schools will present College Expo 2007 for parents and students of both schools from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. Oct. 22 in Mission Hills High's Grizzly Pavillion, 1 Mission Hills Court. Admission is free and parking will be available in the student lot. Break-out sessions will cover topics including: University of California requirements, a Cal State University overview, college applications and how to choose a college. Two $250 scholarships will be awarded to one San Marcos High and one Mission Hills High student attending.
Dean's list honor bestowed
POWAY -- Franke Clark of Poway earned a spot on the 2007 spring quarter at DePaul University in Chicago. To receive the honor, full-time students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above on a four-point scale.
Senior volunteers sought
NORTH COUNTY -- Elementary schools in the Rancho Bernardo, Poway and Rancho Penasquitos areas are seeking senior volunteers to come to schools one hour a week to help children with reading and other subjects. Participants can pick the day and time. No special background is needed. Call (858) 674-1124.
Free tutoring program available
FALLBROOK -- The Self-Improvement Academy is a free tutoring program available in the Fallbrook High School library. Teachers and peer students are available to tutor from 3 to 4 p.m. on academics ranging from science and math to English, history and world languages. Students need to have their identification cards with them and sign in by 3 p.m.
Two bus routes are available after the session. In-town stops include Stage Coach, Aviation, Clemmens, Main, Santa Margarita, East Mission, Live Oak Road, Alvarado, Heald, Vista del Indio, Reche, Olive Hill and these areas of Camp Pendleton: DeLuz, O'Neil and San Luis Rey Housing.
Out-of-town stops include Winterwarm, Via Encinos, Via Monserate, Puerta del Sol, El Mirlo, Camino del Rey, Via Marielena, Wilt, West Lilac, Gopher Canyon, Via Urner Way, Highway 76, Pala Mission, Pankey Ranch and these areas of Camp Pendleton: Vandergrift and Redondo.
For more specific bus stop sites, contact First Student Transportation at (760) 731-7106. A daily bus pass will be provided. Validation passes also will be provided daily.
Soroptimists seek Violet Richardson nominees
FALLBROOK -- Soroptimist International of Fallbrook sponsors the Violet Richardson award annually and is seeking nominees of young women between the ages of 14 and 17 who volunteer in their community or school. The award recognizes young women who make the world a better place through their volunteer efforts.
A cash grant of $250 will be awarded, in honor of the winner, to their volunteer organization.

Tri-tip dinner set for Oct. 5
FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook High School Future Farmers of America will serve its tri-tip dinner before the next home football game Oct. 5 against Rancho Bernardo, which is also the homecoming game. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the agriculture department, located at the east end of the football field. Each meal includes tri-tip, beans, salad, dinner roll and a drink. Cost is $8.
