L.T. still waiting for liftoff with listless, 1-2 Chargers

By: BERNIE WILSON - Associated Press | Tuesday, September 25, 2007 11:26 PM PDT

SAN DIEGO -- LaDainian Tomlinson can't run the ball and his defensive mates can't tackle.

Three games into Norv Turner's third NFL head coaching gig, the Chargers face plenty of questions and nobody seems to have any answers. Starting 1-2 isn't exactly what the Chargers -- or their championship-starved fans -- expected.

Three games into last season, the general populace was horrified by a recurrence of conservative "Martyball" that led to the Chargers' first loss of the season. Now that Marty Schottenheimer is gone and can't be blamed for this start, everybody seems numb from a big dose of Norvacaine.

After being embarrassed at New England and then blowing opportunities against Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers, the Chargers desperately need a win. They open AFC West play on Sunday by hosting the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tomlinson has been the most brutally honest member of the franchise since being taken with the fifth pick overall in the 2001 draft, and he's not hiding his emotions now.

"Of course it's a wakeup call, because you don't want it to continue in a downward spiral from 1-2 and then you find yourself 1-5 and then all of sudden it's over," he said. "We have to definitely find a way to win one game."

The same team that went an NFL-best 14-2 last year hardly looks elite.

It all starts with Tomlinson, and Tomlinson has barely started. In three games he's gained only 130 yards and scored one touchdown rushing, which no doubt has fantasy geeks absolutely aghast. Tomlinson has caught 14 passes for 99 yards and one TD, and has thrown for another score, but is gaining only 2.3 yards per carry.

Three games into last season, Tomlinson had rushed for 300 yards and three scores. He went on to have nine straight 100-yard games and 10 overall.

Tomlinson is running behind the same line he did last year, when he set NFL records with 31 touchdowns -- including 28 rushing -- and 186 points. He also won his first rushing title with a career-high 1,815 yards.

The line includes two Pro Bowlers, center Nick Hardwick and left tackle Marcus McNeill, as well as left guard Kris Dielman, a Pro Bowl alternate who got a $39 million contract in the offseason to remain with the Chargers. There's also Pro Bowl fullback Lorenzo Neal, who's been a lead blocker for 10 straight 1,000-yard rushers.

Right tackle Shane Olivea was hurt early in the 38-14 loss at New England and missed the Green Bay game.

"There's no question we need to run the football," said Turner, who as the Bolts' offensive coordinator in 2001 installed the system they still use today. "That's what this team has been built around, the runner. We need to continue to get back to running the football the way we are capable of running it."

Asked if he thought the Chargers could consistently be successful without running the football, Tomlinson said: "We haven't been able to run the ball in three games and we're 1-2. So I think that answers your question."

The Chargers have been facing eight-man fronts, but Tomlinson's seen those for years.

"It's not going to stop," Tomlinson said. "We're going to continue to see eight-man fronts. Now we have to find a way to run the ball against eight-man fronts. I think we will. Knowing Norv, we've got a great coaching staff that understands the game and understands how to run against eight-man fronts."

Turner also mentioned throwing screen and swing passes to Tomlinson.

"Getting the ball thrown to him quick certainly will help him," the coach said.

The defense has been worked over by Favre and Tom Brady. Trying to stop spread offenses in consecutive games exposed a glaring weakness.

"Obviously the biggest issue, and we just have to address and have to fix it, is we have to tackle better," Turner said.

There's been plenty of speculation that the coaching staff is still feeling its way. Among the reasons for Schottenheimer's sudden firing in February, besides his icy relationship with general manager A.J. Smith, was that the front office didn't like the exodus from his staff.

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was hired as Dallas' head coach, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron got the top job in Miami, and two position coaches became coordinators elsewhere.

Turner and defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell are among seven new coaches on the staff. But Tomlinson said that shouldn't be a factor.

"I think the players know the coaches enough," Tomlinson said. "I don't think that's a real problem. We have coaches who have been here. These guys, they really know the players, so a lot of time they're the ones saying something, speaking out. I think the players, they respect that. They respect those guys' opinions."

Smith said his confidence in the coaching staff isn't shaken, and it's not his style to go for the quick hook.

"I do things at the end of the year," Smith said. "We don't do it week to week.

"I think we've got a good coaching staff, I think that we've got a good football team," Smith added. "I'm happy with everything we've got here. We'd just like to win some more games and make some big plays down the stretch."

While keeping his eye on the long haul, Smith doesn't like the look of 1-2.

"Obviously going against Chicago was quite a challenge, but we did something in crunch time to make that happen," he said. "New England, Green Bay with Brett Favre, were tough duty. We didn't get it done. Now we're faced with our record being what it is. I believe it was Bill Parcells who used to say, no matter what, no matter how you dissect it, you are what your record is. It's all about the number."

Tell that to the Patriots and their coaching staff. The Chargers have been flat, unprepared and running their worst defensive scheme since Dale Lindsey was in town.

Bobby wrote on Sep 26, 2007 9:00 AM:Someone needs to tell LT it is time to step up. We are playing for last place in the AFC West this week! Not expected? A blind man could see this comming, anyone who can read the sports page this last off season should of expected this. The facts are, we lost 28% of our defensive starters, Smith did nothing to replace them. We lost two WR, Smith ran off one and the other is hurt, Smith did nothing to bring any vet help their. Smith ran off one of the NFL's great coaches, who just went 14/2 and yes did nothing to replace him (almost). Smith hired his buddy Cottrell as DC, a guy who could not find a coaching job last year and a OC who has never been anything more than a RB coach. Come on Bernie? 8 man fronts, us Charger fans will see them until A.J. Smith brings a WR who demands double coverage! I bet LT just rolled back his eyes when the Pats got 5 WR in FA and through trades while Smith just sat on his laurels all off season padding his ego?

Joe wrote on Sep 26, 2007 9:01 AM:AJ Smith must have been smoking his cigar and puffing up his ego when he should have been signing Champ Bailey and some sorely needed quality free agents. It' ok to build through the draft but occasionally, like with Keenan McCardel, we need to sign a particular free agent or 2, like the Pats did this year, to fill glaring weaknesses which have been exposed. With the players that AJ has brought in, who were lucky to win some of those games last year against an easy schedule, to quote him quoting Bill Parcells "you ARE what your record IS" and right now ArrogantJ Smith's record is ZERO wins and 2 LOSSES in the playoffs and 1-2 currently. NOW is the time for the team to explode for 3 wins in the division which would put them at 4-2. Too bad (200+ WINS) Marty isn't here (thanks AJ for LOSING record Norval) to keep reminding them to take it ONE GAME AT A TIME and ONE PLAY AT A TIME instead of talking about the Super Bowl before the season even started. I hope Norval had them doing the Oklahoma Drill all this week so they can learn how to block and tackle again. One more stupid play from McCree and it's time to replace him with Weddle. Donnie Edwards already has one interception. How many do ALL of our linebackers COMBINED have right now? That's right-zero, zip, nada. Thanks again AJ for letting your ego get in the way of business. Get a clue Cotrell and NO MORE automatic runs on 1st downs Norval! Go Chargers!

JT San Jacinto wrote on Sep 26, 2007 9:35 AM:I believe that we are going to turn this around. I think what is happening is that the players are still worried about living up to last years acomplishments. I Know we have what it takes! Let's focus on this year and showing the world that the chemistry is there. Let's Go Chargers!!!! Your all Winners!!!

Glenn wrote on Sep 26, 2007 11:01 AM:It really starts with the offensive line. These guys need to start playing like they did last year and blowing defensive lines back. This year, they are not even keeping them at the line of scrimmage. No wonder LT can't get anywhere. Here this offensive line - stop getting pushed around and get the job done right. The wins will come from there.

Jerry wrote on Sep 26, 2007 11:59 AM:The Chargers made one of the all time personnel bloopers in football history by sacking a 14-2 coach and then bringing in…: Norv Turner? And my team: the Oakland Raiders will soon be paying you a visit and I'm so very happy that Norv Turner will be standing on your side-line and not ours.

DAVID wrote on Sep 26, 2007 1:38 PM:I don't think I'm the most knowledgeable Charger fan, but isn't there a way to utilize Michael Turner in a more consistent basis in the offense. What a nightmare it would be for defenses to see L.T. and Turner in the backfield together. It seems that this most likely will be Turner's last season with the Chargers and it would be crazy not to use him more, especially since he only gains about 5to6 yards per carry.I have not seen one,two or even three defenders that can bring him down and I'm glad he is on our side of the ball.Am I the only person who feels this way?

Ron wrote on Sep 26, 2007 1:45 PM:Most of us Chargers fans knew that Norv Turner was a big risk for the Chargers. I wish that Smith read some of our comments and think about what we are trying to tell him, WEAK-UP and smell the coffee, does he know we may not even make the playoff this season and forget about wining a first post-season game. Yes you're right Smith, you are what you're record is 1-2 that could have been easly 0-3. Thank you Smith for doing so little in off-season... And for the Chargers stop living in the past and start playing football....

You deserve a shot in running the ball, and winning football games! Don't stick with a team that continues to promise you what you deserve. When they hired this loser coach they never considered you!

"nothing" just like what he's doing in san diego "NOTHING" i will be at the game 10-14-07 the raiders have a chance now thanks spanos for screwing up your team lol...RAIDER NATION LIVES

Jimbo wrote on Sep 26, 2007 9:02 PM:Face it. The Chargers are jinxed. Who in their right mind would get rid of a NFL all pro QB, a winning coach who just went 14-2, and the best tackler on defense? All thrown under the bus and run off....for "business" reasons. AJ has jinxed the Chargers. As long as he's around, the team will never win a championship.

pull yourself together fans! wrote on Sep 26, 2007 9:37 PM:I remember reading on this very website many charger fans calling for Marty's head at the same time last year when we lost to the Ravens! Now, so many want him back! Make up your minds! As for the poster who said we needed to sign Champ Bailey, while I agree we need better personnel in the secondary, Champ Bailey was never in Free Agency. He was involved in a trade between the Redskins and the Broncos (Portis for Bailey), and that was a few years ago. If you think we needed a phenom cornerback, why wouldn't you suggest signing Nate Clements for more than the $100 million the 49ers signed him for?-

Frank wrote on Sep 26, 2007 9:47 PM:I am shocked by the lack of critical judgement offered by the journalts here. First LT is not personally struggling. Rather he is being greatly contained by the lack of a vertical passing game. Compare Rivers stats this with last in length per completion and you will see how Turner's "underneath" attack", allowing the opposing defenses to hang close to line, has bound up LT. Also Paris' call(in the Chargers-Chiefs Preview) for Larry Johnson to step up his game fails to take into account how rotten the Chiefs OL is this year. Neith LT or LJ is underperforming this but both have seriously flawed elements--passing schem and offense line--that has severly handicapped them. Any real football journalists in the house-

Stop the Hurt wrote on Sep 26, 2007 10:52 PM:I am not a big Marty fan and I'm definitely not a Norv fan. Marty served a purpose. He made this team competitive. Unfortunately, Marty just isn't the coach you want during the playoffs. His playoff record speaks for itself. I can't understand why AJ thought Norv would be better. He has not proven himself as a Head Coach. Actually he has. He's proven that he is NOT a good head coach. And his record speaks for itself. This isn't a gamble, it's a bad idea. So from where I sit, this is the player's year. Starting with preparation, motivation and execution, it's all player reliant this season. If these guys are depending on a great motivational speech from Norv Turner, the season is over. Offensively and defensively, someone is going to have to take charge and get this team going in the right direction. Thanks to Lovie Smith, the Chargers are 1-2. They should be 0-3. In my book, they are 0-3 because they have not performed well enough to be 1-2. Something is wrong in San Diego. And it started with the hiring of Norv Turner.

Ernie wrote on Sep 26, 2007 11:42 PM:I see a team in total disarray, both on offense and defense. Our offense is so predictable with each play and the secondary could not stop a pass if it was thrown right at them. A.J. gets an "F" when it comes to picking a coaching staff and needs to realize in the business world that people are paid to do a job, not to allow one's differences to interfere with the job at hand. We have a team with talent yet no sense of direction and as it stands at present I do not see this team making the necessary changes to make it to the next level. Instead of taking one step forward we took three steps back. Coaches are to have the team prepared on game day and know which plays are to be called ahead time. What happened to having audibles called by the Quarterback if he sees a change in the defense and what if the Quarterback is being pressured by the defense, why can't he work from the shotgun position. As far as the defense, the only thing that a prevent defense has done for this team is prevent them from stopping the offense from scoring. Our defense plays too soft and gives too much of a cushion for opposing offenses. We need to learn how to play man on man and pressure their Quarterback. We also need to learn how to score and get ahead of teams by more than three points and a touchdown. Good luck Chargers. A long time dissappointed fan.

ELLE wrote on Sep 26, 2007 11:43 PM:FIX THE PROBLEMS ASAP....GET HOT AS LEADER....IM TALKING ABOUT THE MANAGER AND THE REST OF THE COACHES...YOU GUYS ARE NOT DOING YOUR JOB. YOUR NOT GETTING PAID TO DO A LOUSY JOB...OR ELSE NOBODY'S GONNA WATCH THE GAME AND FORGET THE NEW STADIUM....

Poncho wrote on Sep 27, 2007 1:02 AM:So everyone crying about Martyball are now trying to blame AJ for our problems, c'mon now. Hey No More, read that comment after yours, man, hes on the money, i dont wanna see you in late December jumping back on the wagon. Instead of blaming AJ for not bringing in free agents, how about we take a look at our guys on the field playing like little sissy girls. We need to get these guys to take off their nice dressed and smack some defensive lineman in the mouth. And why is this chick saying LT should leave? what are we the damn raiders? He's working for the greatest team on the greatest place on earth. Get a clue.

chueyl wrote on Sep 27, 2007 12:49 PM:i believe what is wrong this year is: one, better teams to play against thus far; we are predictable; LT/Gates, Gates/LT. Two, I read/watch USAToday Chargers comments and interviews and they all say the same: "we are a good team" "we know it". That is NOT going to scare nobody in the NFL...prove it with a harder schedule this year and let us, the viewer/fan decide by your actions...that is team action....and I agree with others; been playing football probably all of your young life; the YOU should know how to TACKLE correctly by now...you cannot stop a 300 lb. running bull with an upperbody hit...I am a skinny runt and I know you only topple a giant at the leg area...better beat K.C. this weekend otherwise get ready for more good fan critizing...GO Chargers !

MurphTheBoltFan wrote on Sep 27, 2007 2:28 PM:I agree with Poncho, except for the sissy girl part. like LT said "this is not last year" most of us fans and some of the charger players probably are still riding high on last years success. and he's right. We have to remember this is a new season and its still gonna take as much effort and determination to come out on top like it did last year. But to put all that effort into winning regular season games and have your hopes and dreams deflated does have an impact on facing another season. Its only a matter of time before they get back to their winning ways.. I would much rather lose a couple of embarrassing games and win the superbowl than dominate the season and lose in the playoffs... Save it Charger Fans!!! Go Bolts!

Real Bolt Fan wrote on Sep 27, 2007 6:12 PM:Are you guys serious? AJ is THE BEST thing to ever happen to the Chargers. We had double digit players in the pro-bowl last year. You want him to sign players in the off season so that we will have no money left to keep players like Castillo and Rivers? Don't you remember trying that with Marcelus Wiley and David Boston? For those of you who think Marty is better than Norv, you are killing me. Marty had the "ferarri" for a couple of years and look what he did. In '04 we won our division and went 0-1 in the playoffs AT HOME. In '05 we were the "best team" not to make the playoffs. In '06 we were the best team in football, with the best record, and went 0-1 AT HOME AGAIN in the playoffs. Then Marty let his whole coaching staff leave. If you think the chargers would be better with Marty as HC, Clarence Shelman running the offense and with Marty's brother running the defense, you are crazy. If I have to explain anymore, you just won't understand. In AJ I trust. GO CHARGERS.

Boogie wrote on Sep 28, 2007 9:29 AM:Marty didn't fumble a punt or a pick during the last playoff game. That was the team.
