SAN MARCOS -- The Center for Teaching the Constitution will offer a seminar on the nation's founding documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
The seminar will stress utilizing these foundational documents as working tools to solve current national issues. Prospective students are encouraged to read "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine before starting class.

Artists' group to host demo
RANCHO BERNARDO -- The Rancho Bernardo Art Association will meet at 7 p.m. today at the RB Swim & Tennis Club, 16955 Bernardo Oaks Drive.

Humorist to speak at Friends of the Library meeting

Entertainment by guest speaker Irv Erdos, humorist and North County Times columnist, will follow a brief a business meeting to elect the 2008 Friends board of directors.

Cymer e-Cycle event on tap
DEL MAR -- Cymer Inc. will hold its third Cymer e-Cycle event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.
Throughout the day, local residents can drop off old, broken or unwanted household electronic devices free of charge in a drive-through-style fashion. All materials collected will be recycled or disposed of in an environmentally-safe manner. Bottled water and e-Cycle T-shirts will be given to all who attend.

Living history event set in Old Town
SAN DIEGO -- In recognition of the 14th annual National Public Lands Day, staff members and volunteers from the Bureau of Land Management and Old Town San Diego State Historic Park will stage a living history re-enactment of the exploration and surveys of public lands from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 at Old Town plaza.
The public can see authentic 19th-century survey instruments and learn about the General Land Office, the Homestead Act and other important milestones in the history of the public lands. Staff members will demonstrate how the exploration and surveys of the public lands in the West led to the national parks, monuments, forests and wildlife refuges of today.

Gala to benefit MCRD Museum Historical Society
SAN DIEGO -- The "Globe & Anchor Salute," an annual gala benefiting the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Museum Historical Society, will be held Sept. 29 at the San Diego Mission Valley Marriott Hotel. Floral design forum planned
CARLSBAD -- The Palomar District of the California Garden Clubs will hold a Floral Design Forum at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Woman's Club of Carlsbad, 3320 Monroe St.
The program will feature Noel Tribbey, a member of the American Institute of Floral Designers for more than 28 years. Tribbey has provided stunning floral decor for large resorts from Las Vegas to Maui.
The Floral Design Forum is held the first Monday of each month from October through May. Cost is $8 per program or $45 for all eight. Reservations are not required.
Women's chorus invites new members
ESCONDIDO -- The Pacific Belles Chapter of Sweet Adelines International invites women who like to sing to attend its fall membership drive at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 at Community Reformed Church, 777 W. Felicita Ave.

Domestic violence prevention program set
ESCONDIDO -- The GFWC Contemporary Women of North County will present a free program on domestic violence prevention from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 3 at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive.
The program will feature "The Blanket Exercise," a dramatic reading of hope and topics on legal issues, the dynamics of domestic violence and teen issues. Guest speakers will be Susan Dalati, Esq.; Germain Omish-Guachena, director of Strong Hearted Native Women's Coalition; and Keely Linton, director of North County Family Violence Prevention Center.

Rancho Carrillo hike offered
NORTH COUNTY -- The city of San Marcos' Community Services Department will sponsor a Discover San Marcos hike from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 6. This 4-mile hike has an elevation gain of 350 feet, and will explore the trails in the Rancho Carrillo and Rancho Dorado areas. A more challenging hike uphill to Simmons Family Park also will be offered.
Participants should meet at Carrillo Elementary School at the corner of Melrose and Poinsettia Lane in Carlsbad. From Palomar Airport Road, head south on Melrose, turn right on Poinsettia. Park in the lot near the trailhead.
An adult must accompany all minors. Participants should wear sturdy walking shoes and bring water and trail snacks. Sign in at the meeting location; reservations are not required. No dogs are allowed on this hike.

Italian-American group to host picnic
CARLSBAD -- The North County Italian American Association will hold a picnic Oct. 6 at Stagecoach Park, 3420 Camino de los Coches. The North County Italian Club is a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to high school seniors of Italian descent. Membership is open to anyone interested in Italian culture.

Single seniors club plans dance

CSUSM to host grape stomp fundraiser
SAN MARCOS -- Cal State San Marcos will hold its first-ever "Crush Party" grape-stomping event from 1 to 6 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Forum Plaza on campus. Carlsbad Coastal Winery will haul in two tons of cabernet sauvignon grapes for crushing the old-fashioned way -- with bare feet.
Children ages 12 and younger can stomp for free. For adults, the cost is $20 ($10 for CSUSM Alumni Association members). The fee includes wine tasting, live music, bocce ball and gourmet hamburgers and hot dogs catered by Hunter Steakhouse. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Alumni Association's Endowed Scholarship Fund, which awards up to five student scholarships a year.

The "Crush Party" is one of many of events scheduled throughout October as part of CSUSM's first Alumni Month celebration. More than 18,000 students have graduated from the campus since it first opened its doors in 1990.
'Music of the Gershwins' concert set
CARLSBAD -- The Coastal Communities Concert Band will hold its fall concert, "The Music of the Gershwins," at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at Carlsbad Community Church, 3175 Harding St.
The concert will feature piano soloist Joseph Valent and vocalist Michael Ruhl.

Dinner to benefit Parkinson's association
DEL MAR -- The fifth annual Spirit of Life Awards Dinner to benefit the Parkinson's Disease Association of San Diego will be held Oct. 7 at the San Diego Marriott Del Mar.
William S. Cowling II, a longtime La Jolla resident and chairman of Dixieline Lumber Co., will be honored at the event. Cowling, who has Parkinson's disease, donated $550,000 to establish the William S. Cowling II Parkinson's Resource Center. In addition to funding the center, Cowling also provided, through the association, a $300,000 gift to support ongoing research by Dr. Shirley Otis, clinical director of the Brain Research and Treatment Center at Scripps Clinic.
Mistress of ceremonies for the event will be KGTV 10News anchor Carol LeBeau. Talk radio personality and former San Diego Mayor Roger Hedgecock will serve as auctioneer for a silent and live auction, which includes a week for two at Rancho La Puerta Spa in Tecate, Mexico, and other vacation getaways. Soft jazz music will be provided by Bob Magnusson and Peter Sprague.

Greyhound walk and seminar offered
SAN DIEGO -- Operation Greyhound will host the first Greyhound Walk and Health Seminar on Oct. 7.
The free event will begin at 8 a.m. with a morning walk for participants and their pets through Crestridge Ecological Reserve, followed by a seminar covering topics such as infectious diseases in dogs, dog behavior issues, senior pet knowledge and even insight into pet therapy.
Refreshments will be served, and free drawings for prizes will be held after each presentation. Participants also will have the chance to meet greyhounds up for adoption.
