Schott heard 'round the Q

SAN DIEGO ---- The vociferous chant with 3 minutes, 41 seconds left in Sunday's game is all you need to know in terms of how the Chargers fared against the Kansas City Chiefs: "Marrrty, Marrrty, Marrrty, Marrrty."

It has taken Norv Turner just four games to turn a 2006 postseason team into a 2007 last-place team and leave Chargers fans pleading for the return of former coach Marty Schottenheimer, who guided the team to a franchise-best 14-2 record last season before being fired.

The vocal discord from the 65,175 fans at Qualcomm Stadium was prompted by a second-half meltdown that saw the Chargers suffer their third straight loss, a 30-16 Chiefs victory. Residing in last place in the AFC West with a 1-3 record is hardly the type of four-game start normally associated with Super Bowl contenders.

"Shoulda, coulda, woulda," linebacker Shawne Merriman said. "It's times like this that you get very frustrated. You don't quite know what the problem is, but whatever it is you want to get it fixed.

"If people don't know what a hard time is, it's right now."

The Chargers let a 10-point halftime lead slip away against a team that had scored just two touchdowns in the first 14 quarters of the season. The Chiefs scored 24 unanswered second-half points, including two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

The go-ahead score came when Kansas City faced third-and-19 from its own 49 early in the fourth quarter. Chiefs rookie Dwayne Bowe caught a short pass, eluding sixth-year cornerback Quentin Jammer, and raced the last 40 yards untouched to give Kansas City a 23-16 edge with 11 minutes, 46 seconds to play.

After the play, linebacker Shaun Phillips was livid with defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell. The two exchanged words, and Cottrell followed Phillips 10 yards down the field as Phillips waved his arms to show his disgust.

Turner said afterward that he wasn't sure what the disagreement was about (Chargers assistant coaches aren't available to the media after games) and Phillips downplayed the heat-of-the-moment exchange.

"It wasn't really a confrontation with Ted Cottrell," Phillips said. "It was just me being frustrated. It was not personal."

Four-plus minutes later, quarterback Philip Rivers (211 yards, two interceptions) committed his third turnover of the game when he was sacked by Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson and fumbled.

Rookie cornerback Tyron Brackenridge scooped the ball up on the bounce and went 50 yards to give the Chiefs a 30-16 lead.

On the Chargers' next possession, receiver Vincent Jackson dropped what would have been a 45-yard touchdown pass and the drive ended with four consecutive incompletions from the Kansas City 5. That's when frustration on the part of the fans overheated like a run-down jalopy in the desert and the chants for Marty reached their highest decibels.

Turner acknowledged hearing the unrest of the paying customers.

"There's nothing I can do about that," Turner said. "The things that I've got to be concerned with is concentrating on the things that we can control as a football team."

The players heard the fans as well and understood why the verbal catcalls were so pronounced.

"They pay their money and they have a right to voice their opinions just like anybody else," said running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who had a season-high 132 rushing yards. "They showed their frustration with us and how we've been playing. I can't say that I blame them."

Said Merriman: "The fans pay money to come see us play. They can say whatever they want to say."

The second-half frustration was a vast turnaround from the first 11-plus minutes when the Chargers cruised to a 10-0 lead. They had opportunities to pad the lead, but settled for two Nate Kaeding field goals and led 16-6 at halftime. Both Kansas City field goals came off Chargers turnovers ---- a fumble by Michael Turner and Ty Law's interception of Rivers. Overall, the Chargers committed four turnovers.

"We gave them opportunities to stay in the game with two turnovers in the first half," Norv Turner said. "In the third quarter, I felt we had opportunities to put the game away or certainly build a lead. We didn't take advantage of them."

So instead of being mentioned as one of the league's elite teams, the Chargers find themselves facing a pivotal game this Sunday in Denver, a place where they traditionally struggle.

Furthermore, the happy faces after the opening-week victory over Chicago have been replaced by gloomy looks of disappointment.

After the previous week's stunning loss at Green Bay, Tomlinson said he felt more dejected than at any point in his seven-year NFL career. He was asked if he felt the same way after the Chargers' third consecutive loss.

"Yes, probably worse," Tomlinson said. "You have to continue to play football and hope things turn around."

Otherwise, the Chargers can expect chants of Marrrty, Marrrty, Marrrty, Marrrty to become as commonplace as tailgating at future home games.

Do any of you remember him following a 12-4 playoff season with a non-playoff 9-7 season? Do any of you remember his panic challenge against the Pats or other questionable calls during that game? I for one could not stand another playoff debacle. AJ made the right move...problem is The Spanos' wouldn't let him fire Marty when he wanted to...so what happens the Cowboys screw everything up and pick Wade over Norv. The jury is still out...he's gotta fix it or he's gone. BUT THE PROBLEM IS RIVERS...HE'S JUST PLAYING WITH HIS HEAD UP HIS !@#...Chicago--win...fine...New England--gets the team in a huge hole early with horrible turnovers...Green Bay--could've closed out that game...but overthrew Gates and Jackson and had horrible interception...Today--more turnovers...leads to 17 points...crushing fumble..had a lot of time on that..he's got to get rid of it...missed Jackson in the end zone...announcers said he was pressured...look again--he wasn't. Say what you want about the line play...defense...whatever...but quarterbacks get paid big money for a reason...the fate of the team depends on their solid and dependable play...if your quarterback is turning the ball over, and missing easy passes...your team has really no shot...SEE CHICAGO BEARS...RIGHT NOW RIVERS IS KILLING THE TEAM...When Brees was killing the team, Marty benched him...I'm not saying bench the kid...because I believe in him...BUT HE BETTER GET HIS HEAD OUT BECAUSE HE IS THE MAIN REASON THIS TEAM IS 1-3. KEEP HANGIN' IN...THEY CAN STILL RIGHT THIS SHIP...The Steelers were all but out of the playoffs the year after they went 15-1 but they got it fixed and won the Bowl...The Pats were 1-3 to start their first Super Bowl year... They are a good team...they were not overrated...you aren't overrated if you come off a 14-2 season...THE QUARTERBACK IS KILLING THE TEAM...HE NEEDS TO GET HIS ACT TOGETHER BEFORE THERE IS NO TIME LEFT TO RIGHT THIS THING!-

How many passes will Vincent Jackson drop before they realize he's not that guy? You're kidding yourself A.J. You screwed this up badly. I can't remember a time in NFL history when a GM has botched an offseason so magnificently. When your GM puts personal agendas ahead of what's best for the team, this always happens! Even the most casual fan could see this coming! A.J. is going to get canned and he deserves it! When a team starts to look confused and disorganized, it's time to fire the coach! That won't happen here, but it's going to be a lost season because of A.J. Smith.-

The defensive secondary stinks like they have for the past 40 years. There is not protection and the play calling was horrible. Yea Rivers has played bad but so has everyone else including the non-motivating HC. What happened to the running game in the second half. It was working why did it stop. The whole game/team is PATHETIC. Firing Norv will not be the answer this year. Get rid of AJ and enjoy a "VERY HIGH" first round pick next year. Oh by the way, it is going to be a long season with the product this year.-

Zack wrote on Oct 1, 2007 7:23 AM:Oh, please. I can't believe anyone could believe that this team would be any better under Marty. Marty never brought the Chargers into the playoffs in two consecutive seasons. The Chargers won under Marty playing soft schedules and completely went into the tank once they played a tougher schedule. I have said it before and I will say it again. The Chargers are a soft team. I have been a Charger fan for several decades and they have always in the end come up short. I sure hope LT isn't the team leader, because his press conferences are starting to come off as nothing more that a lot of whining. I sure hope he isn't dragging that attitude back into the locker room. If the players are having trouble picking up the new system, then maybe they need to work harder at it. If the coaches are having problems teaching the new system, then the Chargers brought in the wrong coaches. As for Marty? I give him a lot more credit for wanting the Chargers to succeed instead of enjoying the joke that this team has turned into. I can't imagine Marty enjoying what is currently going on with the Chargers. If he is enjoying this, then he is not the man I think he is.-

Roy wrote on Oct 1, 2007 7:26 AM:James i told you the reasons why the Chargers would not be what you thought they would be. Now is the time for your long winded excuse posts. Face it they will not be a playoff contender under this coaching staff. At least they were under Marty.-

Every year I ask how this guy makes the team? I would not even have Jammer on my AFL team! Did ya see Cottrell pull Merriman off after the sack? Third and long and no Merriman? Of course Jammer gives up a TD. O yes thanx again A.J. for running off great players and coaches for "personal reasons",,, Again Never make business personal Mr. Smith. disappointed fan wrote on Oct 1, 2007 7:59 AM:Can you believe how terrible the Bolts are playing. First the defense was tackling like a bunch of female flag football players. One arm tackle after another was broken and the opposing team consistently make ten or twenty more yards after the initial defensive contact. You do not win games giving up those kind of easy yards, play after play. Second, this new coach has not got a clue how to run a winning team. His clock management throughout the game could have been done better by any high school football coach. He is a loser and MUST GO. Rivers needs to be jerked out of the game when he chokes the way he has been doing. He is a good quarterback but he has a tendency not to recover from big mistakes he has made in the past. Maybe down the road he will be as good as Humphreys or even Brees but right now he is not ready for prime time. When he starts to crumble, a good coach would know that it is time to take him out and replace him. I know all this arm-chair Monday morning quarterbacking is easy but we are die-hard fans who have had high hopes for our team after coming so close last year and to be in LAST PLACE already this early in the season is a bit hard to stomach. I think the defense needs a good a** chewing due to their ineffective tackling throughout the game. I think Rivers needs to learn how not to throw those dead duck balls when he gets a little pressure and most of all we need to find an effective coach that knows how to win. This new coach is a loser and so now we have a Charger team that is a loser. This could have been the year.-

Against KC, he isn't looking again and the ball gets intercepted. . . Then, down by 14 with three minutes to play, 3rd and goal, Rivers goes back to pass, nobody open except LT on a screen completely wide open. Rivers wants to throw him the ball and LT NEVER looks back; would have been a touchdown. If he is going to yell at Rivers for the ball, at least pay attention to the QB. I am increasingly disappointed by LT's lack of game sense.-

Bolt4Life wrote on Oct 1, 2007 8:46 AM:To John: First of all, this is in no way a personal attack. Secondly, are you kidding me, brother?! The reason why LT wasn't "paying attention" during those passes is because he was a decoy, a last option at best. With a linebacker right in front of him, it would be senseless to throw such a dangerous pass. As for the screen yesterday, that was all on Rivers. LT was running that swing to perfection and Rivers saw him, hesitated, and then looked elswhere. LT was on his way to a career day after the first half. There is no way the best player in the game and the reigning MVP forgets how to play the game during one off-season. I think this season is actually showing how much of a class guy we have in LT. He has every reason to call the team out, yet the worst he has done is have a verbal spat with a jittery Rivers. He never caused dissent during the entire coaching carousel and he could have really lost it yesterday after he was kicked to the curb like a practice player during the second half.-

The only differance between the 2... a) Marty is "death by 1000 daggers" (you win in the regular season to die in the playoffs). b) Norv is "Sopranos" style (just one shot to the back of the head). Kiss a new stadium deal goodbye unless things change quick in the front office.

I don't care what these loafers say to the press after the game, they're just empty words, bla bla bla...THIS TEAM HAS NO PRIDE RIGHT NOW! None. Embarrassing. Downright insulting to Charger fan. I spent over six-hundred dollars of my very hard earned money taking my family to the game Sunday, money I bust my butt to make,to scrape together, and to see what? Overpaid, undermotivated contract riders lay the fattest egg I've ever seen at The Murph. Shameful. I guess the message here is that I should find another way to throw away my money by by taking up something more constructive, like gambling. Oh wait, I already have taken up gambling...the game's called 'Buying A Ticket To A 2007 Chargers Game.' Hey A.J...why not stop having Ron Rivera bring you little paper cups of water from the sideline and give the kid a chance. No, you're right...just let the guy who coached the NFL's top-ranked defense in 2006 clean your golf shoes. Secondly, Norv isn't the only Turner that needs to go. I hate to say it, but Micheal Turner has to go...on the trading block. We only have him for 13 more games anyway...GET SOMETHING FOR HIM! He's one of the top 10 running backs in the league, a league short on durable, quality backs, WE NEED A SHUT-DOWN CORNER, NOW!!! Don't let another stud walk away at the end of the season for nothing. STOP THE BLEEDING IN THE SECONDARY!-

I have never been a Marty fan, but at least I had enough respect for the man, knowing he had his players ready to go each week. P Rivers has always reminded me of Ryan Leaf, they waited too long to get rid of him, how long will it take to get rid of Rivers? I have been a fan for 30 years, when will this kind of crap end? Get some coaches who know how to plan games , inspire players and kick some a$$. Get rid of a GM who doesn't give a shi? about winning, who only has his buddies stroke his ego. I don't blame LT at this point..he's tired & frustrated..let me play GM now..we still have Mike Turner..we can use him as trade bait to go after a DB who actually wants to and can play. Justin wrote on Oct 1, 2007 9:58 AM:You know, I understand the chants, the frustration of the crowd, fans, and players alike. Firing Marty was a poor, poor decision, and I understand that he made some bad calls, especially in the playoffs, but who hasn't? I mean only two teams make it to the Superbowl, and the Chargers had/have a hell of a better chance with Marty they they would with Norv Turner. Marty had a knack for building teams the way he wanted. It took a few years, but he got the team he wanted. People thought that dropping Seau, and Brees was a bad idea (or people thought), but that position was filled nicely with Merriman and Rivers. Last year, Marty did his job. We scored the most points in the first 3 games and not allowing many as well. Now we have Norv and look where that's getting us. When you have the experience and tools, you got to know what to do with them! It boils down to the Head Coach and is responsible for all actions of all the players on the team. Norv is showing his inexperience, and the decision of firing Marty Shotenheiomer was a mistake and evident. Norv is digging his grave and will suffer the consequences of is actions (or lack of) soon enough. For the belief that Marty will come back, that's not going to happen. All we can do is wait until Norv's release and hope the next person does a better job at head Coach, Which anything at this point will be an improvement.-

Scott wrote on Oct 1, 2007 10:00 AM:Don't blame Norv; don't blame Rivers; there are three areas I believe deserve blame. First, AJ Smith is the worst GM in the league. He has demonstrated incompetence by his decisions, including his emotional dumping of Marty, letting Edwards and Brees go. Smith should learn how to be a GM, starting with borrowing Beathard's notes, in the CFL. Second, the offensive line is not super bowl level. Brady is a great quarterback because of his outstanding off line. Last, the linebacker corp have the talent but lack leadership, both on and off the field. They have failed to read run or pass, when important. Fix those three things, and the Chargers are in the Super Bowl! Otherwise fans, enjoy the beach on Sunday afternoons, rather than raise your blood pressure in disappointment.

Oh, it must be because of the "WRINKLES". You also likely cost us the playoffs in '05 by playing superhardball with ALL UNIVERSE Antionio Gates who surely would have helped us enough to win the Dallas game. How many tackles did Donnie Edwards have against us? How many tackles did injury-prone Wilhelm have-oh, that's right, he can't even get onto the field and couldn't beat out Donnie to start. Without Godfrey the leadership factor of Donnie has been overlooked and would surely have helped get our defense playing better as it would be IMPOSSIBLE to be playing any worse. Jammer, QUIT NOW-you are EMBARASSING YOURSELF AND THE TEAM. You are a millionaire 1st round 6th year BUST!!!!!!!!!! Florence, you couldn't cover a bed if you were a blanket and I see high school players every week tackle MUCH better than you. McCree is a BUST. START WEDDLE. Rivers looks bad but the O line can't block and the receivers are not getting any separation and LT does not know how to look back for the ball. Can you believe that on 3rd & 19 "get a clue" Cotrell takes out Merriman who led the entire league last year in sacks in just 12 games? FIRE COTRELL NOW, promote Ron Rivera who was the defensive coordinator last year for the Bears in the superbowl and bring in a linebackers coach. OJ Smith knew Norval was not a motivator, but at least he was a sycophant, but thought the players could do it themselves. NOT! Does LT motivate you when he talks? Marty was a master motivator and at getting his players to play their hardest for him. You done get 200 wins or go 14-2 in the NFL by being a bad coach. This team is WEAK, LAZY, UNINSPIRED and PATHETICALLY COACHED. It is mindboggling that Norval would not call a time out in the Pats game when they ran the spread and put in our nickle and dime packages. That is one of the DUMBEST coaching mistakes in the history of the NFL. All we heard last week is how they were going to improve their tackling. NOT! Can you imagine any team in the history of the NFL not being able to cover a 4 yard slant and having it turn into a 50 yard touchdown pass 2 WEEKS IN A ROW? Vincent Jackson got "distracted" (talk about a contrived and pathetic exuse-man up dude and just say you DROPPED IT) and dropped a perfectly thrown bomb that hit him right in the stomach. Pro players do NOT GET DISTRACTED! One play at the end of the game spoke volumes. Larry Johnson, while trying to just run out the clock, ran off tackle which should have gone for 1 or 2 yards but he RAN OVER and STEAMROLLED 6 or 7 of our WEAK defensive players-especially INEPT effort, or lack thereof, of Florence for about 20 yards! That my fellow fans is the definition of UNINSPIRED, LAZY and UNMOTIVATED players. I asked a couple of days ago on this forum if the Chargers have heard their previous 2 wake up calls. It is obvious they have not. If this PATHETIC embarassment doesn't wake them up then I'm afraid nothing will. Yes, Cotrell and Norval are HORRIBLE and not putting the right players in the proper positions but nonetheless it is up to the PLAYERS to PLAY. Hopefully they realize now that they are not nearly as good as all the preseason hype and that the 14-2 was against a weak schedule and they were lucky (remember Vincent Jackson rolling the ball forward after a catch that could have easily been a fumble-how STUPID can you get, oh I guess it is possible like Florence headbutting and Mcree not knocking down the 4th down pass in the Pats game)to win several of those games. Marty is too smart (so smart that he is getting paid 4 MILLION dollars to play golf) to come back to this lions den of OJ Smith's making. Let's hope they can have a good game in Denver and get back on track and get UP to 2-3.-

That is why Marty is an excellent head coach. Norv doesn't have that quality, and that is why a position as an offensive coordinator is better suited for him. If Norv does not make the playoffs this year, AJ really needs to consider hiring a natural leader like Marty.-

It now creates a situation where April 26 & 27, 2008 will be interesting days for San Diego. Since the Turner/Cottrell dance partners have destroyed the organization, it is simply time to say "build for the future" again. There is no possible way in the 2007 season for the impotent San Diego Chargers and the wildly immature Philip "Ryan Leaf" Rivers to beat Indy or NE so let's all enjoy a grand draft weekend in April and maybe Glen Dorsey will be a Charger.-

You will no longer have to give blind loyalty to an ungrateful organization that demonstrates hostility and contempt to its fans. Does this sound familiar? Yes, I was a long-time suffering Rams fan as a kid and young adult. The Chargers organization is hostile to you for all the reasons stated by other fans: bad personnel decisions, planning during the off-season, etc. It wouldn't surprise me if Turner was brought on as a piece of the strategy to argue moving the team out of town. Weird things happen all the time. Think Rams again. So, your team will eventually decide that the blame should be on your shoulders for not cheering "MARTY" loud enough. They will finally decide that you are lousy fans for not having the patience of Job for another 40 years. When they do leave town, they will then do whatever it takes to win a championship just to spite you; to prove it was your fault they never won in San Diego because you didn't give the proper support. No, you dared to go to the beach on a Sunday when you should have been selling out the stadium for another average season. See, it is your fault. My agony is over. I have peace of mind these days. Go Seahawks! Well, they atleast try to give the fans reason to believe. I am ejoying the Rams season this year. Ahh, sweet justice.-

To Bolt4Life from John wrote on Oct 1, 2007 11:24 AM:You say LT was the last option. But I think the key word there is "option" meaning the QB should have the option of throwing to him . . . that is if he were looking back so the QB wouldn't bounce one off of the back of his head again. And I really don't think anyone would believe LT (the past MVP) running out of the back field in the red zone would be a "last option at best". LT with three minutes left was COMPLETELY uncovered, Rivers had the ball ready to go, and LT simply would not look back. You call that "hesitation" on River's part. I am sometimes shocked by the complete lack of ability of anyone in San Diego to give even the slightest criticism of something LT did. He's a great player but he blew that one. Also, if he were paying attention to his QB (remember? he was yelling at Rivers to give him the ball more when he's open) KC would not have had that interception in the middle. See? That wasn't so hard to say; he's a great player but pulled a boob move on two big plays. Come on- you can admit it. He's not infallible. Also, here we go with that classy thing again; what does that have to do with anything today?-

Joe wrote on Oct 1, 2007 2:01 PM:I can't take credit for this but another poster on the Chargers webstite had, in my opinion, an excellent suggestion. Promote Rivera to at least Defensive Coordinator (if not head coach this year and lucky to have him in the wings for next year's head coach) and switch now to running a 4-3 defense. Yeah, I know everybody will say we are "built" for a 3-4. That is true..........to an extent. Drastic times require drastic measures and besides, this is not all that drastic as virtually all high school and college teams run a traditional 4-3 so our players should remember how to work it and Rivera should be able to do a great job of implementing it like he did with duhBears. Put Jamal and Igor at tackles and Phillips and Merriman at ends. Rotate Castillo and Bingham in at tackle and rotate Cesaire in at end. Put Donnie, oh, too bad we don't still have him, Junior Seau, oh we don't have him either thanks to OJ Smith-put "try covering a tight end sometime" Cooper, "can't get on the field" Wilhelm and either Waters (when he gets 100% healthy from old injury), Siler (Go Gators) or Polk in at the other linebacker spot and rotate in Marquess Harris (Dobbins is not yet ready for prime time-keep him on special teams for now) who has a knack for making big plays whom I think of as "the other guy" to "the OTHER guy". The 4-3 should be simpler to run and with Rivera at the controls and the talent we have we should be able to once again begin to dominate at the line fo scrimmage. The 4-3 will keep Merriman rushing the passer which is what he does best and not have him in coverage which is a stupid idea by Cotrell. Just reading body language and between the lines I think most of the team has already lost confidence in Cotrell and Norval. "Short arms" Olivia was beat like a drum by KC and caused many of Philip's hits and bad passes. We should have kept "long arms" Lekekerker and put him at right tackle and demoted Olivia who was only a 7th round pick anyway. Nice to see Mighty Mite Sproles have some good kick off returns and I do think he is a whisker away from breaking one if he can get better blocking to create a seam. Good job to Nate on his strong kickoffs and solid field goals. Use Malcom Floyd more or even try Kasim Osgood again once in a while. It's ironic that there was talk about releasing Eric Parker (yes he had a bad game in the playoffs) in the offseason but now we have the rude awakening that we need a receiver of his caliber and clutch playmaking ability in the slot. I would like to see much more of Legadu Nanee. Bowe is MUCH BETTER than Buster Davis so far! While Marty is way to smart to come back as coach with Mr. EGO running the team perhaps we could at least convince him to be a "consultant" and deliver a MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH to pay for his 4 Million $ he outsmarted the Chargrers out of. A team takes on the personality of its head coach and that is the root of the problem-our head coach (thanks yet again OJ Smith) has NO personality or fire and is entirely unable to motivate the players who should, with the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ they are earning, be able to motivate themselves but obviously are not. Our best players like LT, LoNeal and Gates are soft spoken. Promote Merriman to player/coach and let HIM do the yelling that it is apparent needs to be done to wake them up-the alarm clock certainly didn't do it. C'mon Chargers, it's not too late but I did see the fat lady in the dressing room warming up.

I also agree that the letting go of Marty was a needed move, but the timeing could not have been worse. With the Wade and Cameron moves there was nothign left to do. Who else was he able to get? No one, Norv was the best choice at the time that the decision had to be made. Quite bickering about blame, and let them figure it out. You know they are going to, and when they do everyone will be praising Smith just like they did after letting Eli Manning slip right through his fingers. I hope that Philip Rivers hasn't/won't join them. Yes, he played solid last season, but he was lousy in their 3 losses...and doesn't look very good this year, either. Of course, it would have been nice if genius A.J. had addressed the far below average receiving corps over the last few years...and outside of drafting Cromartie, I can't say that the sorry secondary of the last few years has been improved a whole lot, either. I say A.J. must go. Quickly.

He has been a greatly successful coach, regardless of the playoff losses. He can't catch the ball or run with it. He doesn't fumble, drop passes or muff a punt. Many of his playoff losses were flukie and out of his control. So you Marty hating morons you get what you deserve. AJ's ego and the lovable Spanos family mafia are now your real problems. He was expecting the ball and it never came. As far as the "classy" sidebar, I just thought we should give credit where credit is due. We have seen what happens when superstars get shafted--TO, Chad Johnson, etc. True, his class had no bearing on the outcome of the game, but I think it speaks volumes about his character and persona that he is not giving primetime quotes to the horde of reporters in the postgame locker room. TO BASHERS OF RIVERS: C'mon, folks...do you really know what you are saying or asking? Phil has had a HORRIBLE year. He's not making the right decisions and his play is atrocious, but he will pull out of this funk. One of his statements I will never forget (although, at my age, I can only remember enough to paraphrase it). When asked about the lack of motivation and what he was doing about it, he said, "It is not my job to motivate the players"... they are professionals, they should motivate themselves. To me, that speaks volumes about his coaching skill. He should read a book on Lombardi sometime.

Go back to Pop Warner, learn that you have to be ready on every play. Time for all you bandwagonneers to jump off---take Norv with you. I gave him the benefit of the doubt when hired, the doubt is gone. Offseason he talked about giving the ball to the playmakers and we get 6 runs in the 2nd half. What happened to letting LT run the ball on 1rst and goal on the 5? Or 2nd and goal or 3rd? Poor play from 2ndary, offensive line, D-line, receivers. Poor play calling, adjustments, clock management, and basically the worst prepared and least motivated team Iv'e seen in 28 years. But when we're losing, the true colors show. I have been a fan for over 35 years watching Charger games as a child with my Grandfather. I've seen more horrible seasons than good ones, but always watch them regardless. If your a fan, stick with them. I guarantee most of you who bag on them now will either be watching them next week or watch the news to see what happened. If they lose, one more thing to bitch about, but if they win, still something to bitch about.. they win two in a row, then the fans lighten up.. Add another win, then we have the fans back. Regardless who's coaching (granted Norv's not the best), Charger fans always find something to bitch about. For me, I bow my head and think there is always next week. However , at times, it's not a happy thought, but I truly hope there are more sincere fans than this in San Diego. If your fan get on the wagon, if not, get off. Has anyone else noticed that on almost every third down they have him in a down stance as a defensive end? Why don't we just put a big neon sign over his head, "MERRIMAN IS HERE!" Heck James even radio commentator Lew Bush echoed my sentiment that Norv's "soft" practices had a real negative effect on this team. You see James it was not a tough call for me to make a few months ago. I watched Fouts practice in his heyday, Humphrey's at his peak, and Brees and Rivers. Do you get the picture? As camp and practices go so go the season. Go back and watch how Marty conducted practices and then compare that to the lackadasical style of Norv. We have lost some of Marty's toughness, sense of urgency, and focus on "one play at a time." Now you say Marty is gone because he is a playoff loser. Well James it sure looks like we will make the playoffs this year! Do you think Norv has a better chance than Marty to go deep? Ha! What a joke! We gotta get there fool before we can win one and Norv has a poor record to prove that he can do it, and his record will get worse as the season unfolds and Norv's style gets more imprinted on this team. Our schemes on both sides of the ball are obvious and easily broken down. Weren't we supposed to be a more aggressive defense this year? Right!Instead, we've become predictable and even confused by what we're trying to achieve. Although I'm a bit disappointed with the performances of some individual players, our coaches have to do a better job at putting them in a position to excel. JAGV wrote on Oct 2, 2007 5:09 PM:Yeah all you guys crying for Marty.... it is a lost cause.. give that up! Lets be realistic. PETE CARROL would be a logical choice and then demote Norv to Offensive coordinator. Norv called the same plays over and over if he is so good offensively then why do we keep trying to squeeze the ball to gates on the sidelines among two and three defenders! His excuse for not sticking with the run game against the Chiefs was that the pass wasnt working.. well with a lead you run run run then punt and let your defense win the game. They continued to pass with thte lead until the passed the lead to Kansas City. They have called the same plays so many times it is rediculous. I am beginning to wonder if Rivers is able to grasp the offense because the bolts seem to have like ten plays that they call on a regular basis and the same set of plays they have called over and over in four straight weeks. No challenge for a defense to figure out who to cover on a passing play just double cover Gates and Jackson and it is game over, put 7 men in the box and the Bolts are shut down. Rivers play action is so pathetic it couldnt fool a high school defense i mean he really doesnt even do the play action well at all (refer to Peyton Manning for the correct way to carry out a play-fake). Sadly that is just one side of the ball. Defense has slipped right back into the same old stuff i have been witness to for 25 years, soft coverage and lack of secondary. The Quick slant is eating the bolts up! they play ten yards deep off almost every reciever they have played so far leaving the slant wide open and the seams even more open. Without a decent star at middle linebacker we have no shot at making the playoffs ( see Donnie Edwards KC chiefs) The simple of it all is A.J. Smith thinks he is gods gift to the football world and his personal matters take priority over what is most important for the team. A.J. wanted to trade Donnie Edwards last year the leading tackler for the bolts on consecutive seasons, he released the star player after last season.Terrance Keil was a solid NFL player who had issues off the field he was a solid safety, he is gone. Keenan MCcardell was a solid reliable reciever no longer with the team (Redskins signed him)and last but not least Marty was a solid coach who turned conservative in the post season, but 12-4 and 14-2 is nothing to scoff at and look what he did for the ground game. Then to top it off A.J. and the Spanos family must have realized the talent level was watered down so they hired a perrinial loser named Norv Turner so they could have a built-in excuse so that when they started to lose there was a scape-goat. Brick hands Jackson is the bolts number one option?? I fully believe that Kasim Osgood has softer hands and could easily relace Jacksons lackluster performances but a number one option they are not. Too bad the Spanos family cant get off some cash and sign a quality free agent. (See the Patriots recieving core for quality free agent WR pick ups, including an ex-Charger whom A.J. Smith thought didnt have enough talent to cut it in the N.F.L. Wes Welker.) To sum all of this up, it isnt the players fault nor the inept coach. It is the Gm A.J. Smith who looked at his group and said we will stand pat on our talent pool and not sign any of the number of huge names the free agent market provided in the off-season

Why is it when people complain after being frustrated they are labeled as weak fans? That is such a crock - if anything we are better than true fans because we are passionately... [angry]. We pay big bucks for tickets or the NFL ticket, and we expect more from our team than the crappy performance they've delivered the last 3 games. This doesn't mean we are jumping off the bandwagon - I've been a Charger fan since the 70's so I'll live and die a Charger fan. It's not even the 1-3 record - it's how we've lost that is really embarrassing. The fans that ALWAYS give the benefit of the doubt to the stupid decisions made by AJ and Norv are crazy - they are probably the same fans who are happy the Padres gave it their best shot this year. NOT - we should have got a true power hitter but instead we went with hot-head Bradley and mediocore Barrett. RESULTS - out of the playoffs. Great job Moores at opening up that tiny wallet of yours - I guess you spent too much money in Houston. It should never have come down to a 1-game playoff - we should have won our 3rd straight division title, and than do what we do best - lose in the 1st round to the Phillies. Back to the Chargers - AJ and/or Dean completely screwed up and didn't hire Wade Phillips as the head coach. I like Marty and I would have kept him anyday over Norv Turner, but AJ doesn't work well with him - fine, just pick a better coach to replace him, and for heavens sake - let the head coach pick his own coaches - I hate how AJ has to control everything by forcing Cottrell on whoever took the job. This doesn't mean AJ deserves to be fired - he's a great talent evaluator - he just needs Dean Spanos ... tell him his place in the organization. Can I say Beathard-Ross! People who don't learn from their mistakes repeat them. AJ screwed up and let quality veterans leave like Donnie Edwards and Keenan McCardell - sure, they aren't the best in the league but experience matters. Have you seen the replacements this year? They are sucking! Remember the last players' coach we had - Mike Riley. Just because the players like him doesn't mean diddly. You need a motivator to get the NFL players to play at a high-level. Blaming anything on LT is crazy - it's not his fault Rivers is throwing the ball too early because he doesn't want to be hit again - the biggest problem is the OL isn't showing up this year, and AJ made the decision that young WR talent is better than an experienced WR - another stupid move. Rivers isn't playing great but to already want him gone is beyond stupid. He can't make the WR catch the ball and he can't throw if he has defenders all over him. Final analysis - give Turner a few more games to turn this around. If not, fire him and Cottrell - replace with Rivera and ride out the season. Next year - AJ learn from your mistakes and pick a winner as a coach, and do what NE does (sign some veteran free agents). Good luck being a SD sports fan - it's rough but somebody has to do it.

They will improve, and I'll bet they make the playoffs. But we haven't hit bottom yet. Strap it on and suck it up, Charger fans. And play to the whistle.-

It wasn't his fault, The players had one bad game... If Marty was still the coach for the Chargers, I seriously think this would have been their year. Trim the fat now!!! Get norv the loser out...
