Injuries suddenly mount for Bolts

Hardwick out; Williams, Goff have surgery | Tuesday, October 16, 2007 1:09 AM PDT

SAN DIEGO -- Chargers Pro Bowl center Nick Hardwick is expected to miss at least two games, and possibly a few more, because of the sprained right foot he suffered during Sunday's victory over the Oakland Raiders.

Hardwick underwent an MRI exam to determine the severity, and the team had not revealed the results as of Monday night.

Coach Norv Turner admitted earlier in the day that he was concerned and sounded fearful of being without Hardwick for an extended time period.

"I'm hoping it's a three- to four-week injury," Turner said during a midday press conference.

The Chargers have a bye this Sunday before resuming play Oct. 28 against the Houston Texans.

Eight-year veteran Cory Withrow will start while Hardwick is sidelined. Withrow filled in admirably for Hardwick during Sunday's contest and helped LaDainian Tomlinson rush for 198 yards and four touchdowns.

"I don't think he had played a snap at center, and he goes in and plays and really played well," Turner said. "It's just a luxury when you have a guy like that who is capable of going in and doing those things."

Hardwick isn't the only ailing player. Defensive tackle Jamal Williams underwent minor surgery on both knees, right guard Mike Goff underwent surgery on his left thumb, and receiver Eric Parker was getting another opinion on the right big toe injury that has sidelined him for more than 10 weeks.

Williams had loose particles removed from both knees and could be in jeopardy of missing the Chargers' game against Houston on Oct. 28.

"Based on what our doctor was saying, it would've been hard for him to keep going," Turner said of Williams, who didn't practice for most of the past two weeks. "That's why we've rested him the last two weeks. We hoped we could get to this point and we did.

"I think this is really going to help him be ready to play at the same level he's been playing over the next 10 weeks."

Goff injured his thumb during Sunday's game against Oakland, and Turner thinks he'll return to practice next week.

Parker hasn't played this season after injuring his toe in a June minicamp and later undergoing surgery in early August. He was projected to miss up to 10 weeks, but Turner is now hinting that Parker's injury could prove to be season-ending.

"We need to have a resolution of this soon because if Eric is not going to make it back, we have to look and see if there's another direction," Turner said. "If we can get him back, we would love to get him back."

Defensive end Jacques Cesaire tweaked the same ankle he injured one week earlier against Denver, but should be able to play against the Texans. Receiver Craig Davis also reinjured his ankle and Turner hopes he'll be able to practice this week.

Regardless, the loss of Hardwick would be the biggest blow. Turner gushed about Hardwick after Sunday's game.

"He's an underrated player and I don't know if people understand how good he is," Turner said. "I know he's a Pro Bowler. I've been around some real good centers and he's as good as I've been around.

"That was something for Cory to come in and play the way he did, and us to appear not to miss a beat was big when you can have a guy step up like that. Nick is the centerpiece of our group and he's an outstanding football player."

Chargers notes

Bobby wrote on Oct 16, 2007 7:45 AM:How does a key player like Parker, Rivers favorite 3rd down WR, hurt his toe way back in June and it is not dealt with? Better yet, how does Smith keep his job by not doing it? No trades, no FA's, no coaching no medical, nothing to make this a better team for a shot at the Super Bowl. How does this guy get paid for taking apart a great team and coaching? Could this be why Archie did not want his pretty boy to come to SD? I have run a business almost 40yrs,,, Smith is no GM!

Mike wrote on Oct 16, 2007 8:10 AM:I think AJ has done a great job of assembling a team capable of a run. According to the medical guys, Parker's toe would keep him out for some early games, but he would be back by mid-season. AJ has nothing to do with the injury or Parker's ability to heal. Jackson, Davis, Floyd, are all capable receivers. Throw in Gates and Tomlinson and we have more than enough guys capable of catching the ball. The "problem" early on has been Rivers under pressure, on 3rd downs. He has been knocked down, hit, sacked, forced to throw on the run and otherwise pressured. This is on O-Line problem created by some very good defenses (Bears, Patriots, and Green Bay). Nobody is perfect, but under Smith's GM leadership the Chargers are and will remain contenders. Good job AJ.

Go home Bobby wrote on Oct 16, 2007 8:26 AM:I'm tired of you fair weather fans who come from Boston, Chicago, NY, Philly, or god knows where shooting down the Chargers every time we hit a bump in the road. Everyone including the doctors thought Parker would be better by now. You were probably one of the fans yelling Marty, Marty after the Kansas City loss. Go home to your foul weather and stop bringing your bad karma to my Chargers! You come to my town because where you lived the winters were a little rough and now you complain about the expensive cost of living. You still have your team’s memorabilia in the bottom drawer of your dresser and you pull it out when your team comes to town and act like you root for them every week. If the Chargers lose two games in a row you throw your hands in the air and declare the season over. You wouldn’t of left home if weren’t a fair weather person. Go home; buy a tanning booth and a sand box and then talk bad about the Chargers!

Keith wrote on Oct 16, 2007 9:52 AM:Eric Parker is worth waiting for so they wait. To just say oh lets just IR the guy and get someone else is a bit premature. He will pay off when he gets the chance and we all hope it is soon. Losing Hardwick and Jamal for any game is going to be tough and we really need them back in good health. Many kudos to Cory and coaches for having him ready to step in. Go Bolts!

Rick wrote on Oct 16, 2007 10:36 AM:I believe in AJ, not perfect but better than 90% of the GM's in the league. During times of injury, we have players that have filled the void. Mckinney for Jamaal (admirable), Withrow, Polk. Last year without AJ's moves on personnel you think we would have went 14-2. We have yet to see Naane, Waters, Siler, TE from Iowa play on a consistent basis. Siler is a beast....Very promising young group.

Florida Bolt wrote on Oct 16, 2007 12:14 PM:WELCOME CHRIS CHAMBERS ,this guy can play ,this move is huge. With Chambers and Eric Parker back ,WATCH OUT PATSYS!!!

Maury wrote on Oct 16, 2007 12:20 PM:Just read this on Fox Sports: San Diego has acquired wide receiver Chris Chambers from the Miami Dolphins for what it believed a second-round draft choice, FOXSports.com has learned. Chambers confirmed the trade in an email to FOXSports, but declined further comment until speaking with Dolphins coach Cam Cameron and general manager Randy Mueller. Chambers has 31 catches for 415 yards with no touchdowns this season.

The Pook wrote on Oct 16, 2007 12:55 PM:But the question remains: who did they take off the roster to make room for Chambers? Parker???

SAM wrote on Oct 16, 2007 2:17 PM:Hey Keith, Parker's done for the season...had his second opinion yesterday...this move is not premature...IT IS NECESSARY AND BRILLIANT...AJ RULES!

Jay wrote on Oct 16, 2007 2:22 PM:Exactly Pook, Parker is now on IR where he won't have to "press" and hurry back from an injury, and we get a BETTER WR who ALREADY KNOWS THE SYSTEM! Jackson - if he continues to play like he did in Denver, and other guys step up like against oakland will be the #2 a role he is used to , and Buster Davis will have an easier time as the 3rd or slot reciever

RiverstoChambers wrote on Oct 16, 2007 5:19 PM:Man it would have been great to have parker back. He is like our wes welker. It shows that Rivers has struggled w/o him. I absolutely love the trade...AJ is a very brilliant man. To be able to give up a second round draft choice just shows how much youth and talent the chargers have...GO BOLTS

Scott wrote on Oct 16, 2007 6:36 PM:Great quarterbacks and great defense wins super bowls. The Chargers are a couple of years away from possibly being great (and winning when you have to win). The Patriots are the Secretariat of the NFL this year. If they stumble in the playoffs, then there is hope for the rest of the pack.

Merr wrote on Jan 6, 2008 5:14 PM:For those fans yelling "Marty" - they should check out Marty's record at Kansas City and you might feel sorry for KC fans who sit in subzero weather and rain, sleet and snow to lose because of "Marty Ball." I was so disgusted when Marty came to SD since I had been in KC for 7 of the 9 years he was there only to have good seasons end with the first playoff game and never getting to the "Show."
