Trophy catch: Bolts acquire Miami receiver for second-round pick

By: MIKE SULLIVAN - Staff Writer | Wednesday, October 17, 2007 12:21 PM PDT

SAN DIEGO -- Chris Chambers woke up Tuesday morning as an employee of the Miami Dolphins, with no idea that he was about to be leaving a winless team and joining one tied for first place.

He was stunned when Dolphins coach Cam Cameron called to inform him that he had been traded to the Chargers.

But as the day wore on, Chambers quickly recognized his good fortune. The seven-year veteran receiver expressed excitement over the unexpected change of scenery after the Chargers acquired his services for a second-round pick in the 2008 NFL draft.

"Every minute, every second I'm starting to understand the transition. It's really a great opportunity for me," Chambers said during a quickly arranged conference call with San Diego reporters. "All I've known is the Miami Dolphins the past seven years. There were some rumors earlier before training camp that some stuff may happen, so I knew right then and there to be prepared if something does and I feel like I am.

"I'm ready to move on and get a fresh start to my career. I feel like I have a lot to offer and I haven't maximized my ability yet."

General manager A.J. Smith was thrilled after bolstering the Chargers' wide receiver position by adding a player who was a Pro Bowler just two seasons ago, when Chambers caught 82 passes for 1,118 yards and 11 touchdowns.

"We had an opportunity to add an experienced, productive receiver and we couldn't pass it up," Smith said. "It was a steep price ---- a second-rounder ---- but I felt he was worth it. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do to help us."

Chambers, 29, has caught 31 receptions for 415 yards this season. The Chargers' wide receivers have caught just 36 passes as a group, led by Vincent Jackson's 20.

The Chargers placed receiver Eric Parker on injured reserve to make room for Chambers on the 53-man roster. Parker hasn't played a down this season after toe surgery in August.

However, Smith said Parker's situation had little to do with the acquisition of Chambers. He termed it a "late development" that arose and expressed that he has long had a fondness for Chambers' talents.

Head coach Norv Turner has first-hand knowledge of what Chambers can do after serving as Miami's offensive coordinator from 2002-03, Chambers' second and third NFL seasons. Chambers caught 116 passes over those two years.

Turner offered a glowing endorsement when Smith approached him for insights.

"I was with Chris for two years and he wanted to know my feelings about Chris and how he'd fit and all those things," Turner said. "It's just the right thing for this team right now. The biggest thing is it's not a reflection on our receivers. Our receivers are going good and they're going to make a lot of plays for us.

"The biggest thing is with Eric's situation, and I alluded to it on Monday that we were having tests done and I was concerned about where Eric would be. The timeframe just wasn't going to work for Eric. It was going to be too long and he wasn't going to be able to be a part of what we're trying to get done."

Because Miami was using a similar system under Cameron and because of his familiarity with Turner, the 5-foot-11, 210-pound Chambers envisions a short learning curve. He was flying to San Diego on Tuesday night and might even participate in today's practice.

"I don't think it's going to be much of a transition, maybe a few words here and there," said Chambers, a second-round pick in 2001 out of Wisconsin. "All the routes are the same and everybody runs the same routes. They may be called a little bit different but for the most part, I spent two years with Norv and I felt like that second year, I was really getting some of the stuff he wanted to do.

"I can pretty much step into that huddle and pretty much know everything that is going on right now."

Chambers ranks fifth in Dolphins history with 405 career receptions and fourth in receiving yardage (5,688) and touchdowns (43).

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson and quarterback Philip Rivers both applauded the trade.

Tomlinson played with Chambers in the Pro Bowl, and said his talents and easygoing nature makes him a good fit for the team. Rivers was thrilled to gain another productive receiving target.

"Any time you can add a player of his caliber, as a quarterback you love it," Rivers said. "I'm excited about it because of his experience and he's played at a high level in this league. He's not just an experienced receiver, but he's been a big-time receiver in this league for a while now."

Chambers is signed through 2009, and his base salary for this season is $5.4 million. He's due to make $5.1 million in 2008 and $4.55 million in 2009.

In July, Chambers was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and speeding in Charlotte, N.C. It was later revealed that his measured blood-alcohol level was .06, below the legal limit of .08.

Late last month, the DWI and reckless driving charges were dropped as part of a plea bargain in which Chambers pled guilty to speeding.

"We're aware of it," Smith said. "If it was a major problem, he'd still be in Miami."

Instead, Chambers will be playing in San Diego, and that is a development he welcomes with the way the season has been going for the 0-6 Dolphins.

"It's been a couple tough years for me," Chambers said. "Three of the last four years, we started off this way, and you basically get sick and tired of it. From that standpoint, I'm coming to a great team with a lot of great players and guys who know how to win."

We may finally have someone to compliment Gates. AJ Smith finally did something worthy. Could get real interesting if Jackson and Floyd come around and once we get back Parker. We could actually put a legit receiver group to match that of the Pats. Season has just started guys..let's do some damage. You all should hear the way they are bashing Merriman up here in the Nor Cal, especially the Raider networks..they have said over and over that Merriman should be tested for 'Roids every game..what losers..we cannot help it if Dante is 10 years past his prime..Raiderz..quit making excuses..you lost, end of story. Go Bolts!

Joe wrote on Oct 16, 2007 2:09 PM:Good pick up by the Chargers of Chambers. It looks like Parker's injury is more severe than orginally thought and could even be season ending. He is going to get a second doctors' opinion. This will take the pressure off of Davis to perform at such a high level now. With Gates, Chambers, Jackson and Davis we will finally have a full compliment of quality receivers for Rivers. Good timing on the pickup before the bye week to get him prepared although he is familiar with Norv's system which ran as Offensive Coordinator for the Dolphins. Good move AJ.

SAM wrote on Oct 16, 2007 2:15 PM:I'm so sick you no-nothings bashing AJ. This Chambers move is as brilliant as the McCardell move a few years ago. He didn't move on a wide receiver because they were expecting Parker back, who by the way would've made a huge difference in the passing game. Now that Parker's on IR he had to move. Chambers is a game breaker...by about week ten this Charger offense is going to be friggin scary!

Oh, so now we need to get on our knees and thank the great Bobby (or is it also Buddy) for having "woke AJ up" with his compelling insights into the world of Charger football. So, Bobby/Buddy, AJ "finally did something to earn his pay and better this team."? Tell us, oh great one, did the following players just fall from the sky onto the Chargers roster: LT, Rivers, Merriman, Hardwick, Kaeding, Gates, Phillips, Olivea, Dielman (drafted and re-signed), and I can name several more. Actually, I'm surprised you didn't yap about not trying to sign Michael Turner to a ga-zillion dollar long term deal which would mortgage the future of this team away. Oh, are you saving that for your next insightful comment for AJ? Thanks Buddy, I mean Bobby.

flash19sd wrote on Oct 16, 2007 4:51 PM:Great move by AJ, AGAIN! Chargers will need to outscore Pats/Colts so Chambers' addition should help. He brings some baggage with him and he has a few drops this year but you gotta love his speed and experience. He already knows Norv's offense so he should pick things up quickly. Should not have given any more than 3rd round pick but the urgency of Parker's new diagnosis and Buster Davis' nagging injuries required AJ to meet the 'Fins price. Check this out. One of the reasons we have run so well lately is because they have the wide receivers coming in motion from out-to-in and picking off the LB or safety to spring LT for the long runs. This is really cool to watch. When you see LT's runs from the Oakland game, watch Vincent Jackson. He did it on the first touchdown and was actually the guy who caused LT to flip over the goalline. He did it on most if not all of LTs long runs Sunday. With Chambers we can afford to go to 3 WR sets with V-Jax and Floyd/Osgood pinching in to block so they can either spring LT or take out a blitzer for Rivers to hit Gates short or Chambers long. Check it out! It's brilliant. Thanks Norv and, of course, AJ!!!

tranquilizar wrote on Oct 16, 2007 6:02 PM:Both teams win. SD had to do something to stay in the hunt. Chambers has underachieved in Miami so the 'fins received great value with a 2nd round draft pick. Chambers will put up good numbers with SD but he is inconsistant. We are lucky to have Gates & Tomlinson to go to. Chambers will keep some attention from them but he lacks separation speed. He will make brilliant catches and drop the easy one to extend the drive.

Joe wrote on Oct 16, 2007 9:18 PM:All receivers, especially ours, drop passes. Chambers is the #5 leading receiver in the HISTORY OF THE DOLPHINS and that includes some great ones like Paul Warfield, Mark Clayton, Mark Duper etc. so in just 6 or 7 years he has accomplished a LOT in Miami with BAD quarterbacks. With Parker out for the season and Davis always hurt this was the perfect pick up of a top notch and established pro receiver to help spread the field and open it up for LT and Gates. While McCarell was an excellent posession receiver Chambers has explosive break away talent to take a slant for a touchdown. Great pick up at the perfect time during the bye so he can reaquaint himself with Norv's offense with which he is familiar from when Norv was in Miami. It works for Miami to as at 0-6 they can stockpile draft picks and go into a rebuilding mode. Great move by both teams.

It's true, Chambers comes with some drops but he's explosive, turns slants into long TD runs...He comes with drops but so does T.O....hate him or love that guy, he can play... MM wrote on Oct 17, 2007 4:12 AM:Outstanding AJ. This guy is the deal. Everyone needs to leave AJ alone and let him do his job. The man is a stud at evaluating and bringing in talent. The only thing now is to let Cromartie line up and start playing the other teams best wr one on one. The second round pick doesn't bother me at all. I still think if they can trade The Burner and get a second or better they should look at it. I hate to see them get only a third in 09. I take my chances that LT will not get hurt. He has not missed time yet. And last but not least, get Weddle on the field at all times and leave him. Way to go AJ!!==

Miguel wrote on Oct 17, 2007 4:31 AM:TO 21luv - Bellicheat??? who hasn't in the NFL? He just got to be the scapegoat. The Patriots are 6-0 and they are coached by the professor of coaches and run by the best quarterback. So go ahead and take your licks, but Bellichek is still the best hard working and creative coach out there. And the Chargers did make a great move by getting Chambers. I like to see them win more games and get to the playoffs. I am not sure Norv is the final cup of tea for the team, but give him a chance this year and if he continues to coach like his record then he should be given a pat on the back and shown the exit door. With all the talent in the Chargers midst, now they need an aggressive coach with creativity to go along with it. So let's see what happens the rest of the way. I love the Patriots and the Chargers. So, just cool it when it comes to Bellichek. We'll be lucky to get someone close to his talents to coach our team.

Larry wrote on Oct 17, 2007 4:31 AM:Kind of reminds me of a trade the Chargers made in the 80s. They had a good running game, great tightend but had lost the No.1 wideout. Give yourself 5 points if you guessed Wes Chandler. Chambers has the ability to break the long one. This is a great upgrade, moreso than the McCardell deal. McCardell was a possession receiver, Chambers is a homerun threat on a team that needed one on the outside.

Fan MAybe wrote on Oct 17, 2007 5:20 AM:This deal FELL into aj's hands and he almost fumbled it away! If good old Norv hadn't of known about Chambers from just before he left Miami they never would have figured it out. Good old aj and norv, working as a team... All of you guys are jumping around like the Chargers just made themselves into a football team again. No way, 9 & 7, maybe a wild card...

Zack wrote on Oct 17, 2007 7:57 AM:The Chargers have enough to win a very week division. Granted it is not as week as the AFC East, but no division is weaker as a whole than the AFC East. If this acquisition helps keep the Charger defense off of the field, then that is great. If Parker wasn't put on IR, I find it hard to believe that the Chargers still trade for Chambers. If the Chargers make it to the playoffs, then that second round pick would be in the number 50 range over all. That isn't really that much to give up if you consider that the Chargers haven't had a great deal of luck in drafting wide receivers as of late, regardless of what round they draft them in. This move will also help give much needed veteran leadership to the wide receiver squad. In the end, whether the Chargers win the AFC West or not entirely depends on their defense.

John wrote on Oct 17, 2007 10:12 AM:I love the move. Did anyone see what Chambers did to the Bolts the last time we played the Fins? He'll stretch the field, allowing Gates and LT more room, which is a good thing. With Parker coming back next year, and Jackson, Davis, Floyd, and Nanee in the fold, our wide receiver corps has a good mixture of young and old, for years to come! And thats a good thing. Also don't underestimate the importance of our starting inside linebackers finally playing together. Polk and Dobbins do a good job in spot play, but theres a reason Wilhelm got the contract. I know losing Donnie sucks, but Wilhelm is our boy, and we need to pray that he can stay on the field. Chambers, Gates, Tomlinson, Jackson, and Davis. Attn Norv. Now lets go 5 wide, with an empty backfield boys. Who's going to cover them? Go Bolts!!!!

Is it the vanity thing or what, cause me and alot of folk think that single handsomely AJ turned the TEAM around more then any prior GM's in Boltland history, so maybe they really are showing us all how the beavys and butnuts brains are wired. Positive grounded for one!

Joe wrote on Oct 17, 2007 11:22 AM:Good point POOR jssf about Chambers now having to PROVE HIMSELF to a very strong team instead of just accepting ineptitude by the Dolphins. That is a good motivation, especially with his hefty contract of around 5 MILLION $ plus, as he is getting to around the midway point in his career and is tired of losing in Miami, he sees this as his shot at getting a ring this year or by '09 when his contract his up. He is most DEFINITELY worth a #2 draft pick as he has PROVEN he can perform at a pro bowl caliber level while any draft pick is just a ? and "potential" until they acutally prove they are good at the NFL level. I have railed on AJ but this is a great pick up at the perect time with Parker out for the year and Buster Davis always injured. Go Chargers!

Truthspitter wrote on Oct 17, 2007 11:39 AM:I am sure James the Dolphins fan knows that Chambers didn't go to Ohio St, my guess is he was referring to Ginn. As far as Chambers goes, great pickup by the Bolts....even if he flops (which I doubt) it shows they are being aggressive, I like it.

It will be nice to turn the tables and watch him make those types of plays for us. I think CC could be the best receiver SD has seen in a long time. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Chambers is good for 10+ TDs this season. I still like Parker and don't want to see him fade away but Chambers is going to be huge for us. A go-to receiver is the one thing missing this year. I believe that is why Rivers has struggled a bit. GO CHARGERS!!!

Even some Pats fans have been classier than the players on their team after winning earlier this year. BUT WITHOUT A DOUBT, THE WORST FANS IN THE NFL ARE STEELER FANS. They are the most arrogant fans and they have absolutely no class. Bobby must be a closet Steelers fan. They have this feeling of entitlement that they should be in the Super Bowl every year that rivals the arrogance of Yankees fans in MLB. You could beat them 82-0 and all you hear is "the refs beat us" or "we would have beat you at home" or "we've got 5 rings, how many you got" or "you guys were just lucky" or some other BS comment. I enjoyed the 1994 AFC Championship Game even more because it was the cocky Steeler fans after the game sitting and staring at the field in disbelief as the Chargers celebrated going to the SB. It was funnier and eerily similar to the looks on the faces of the University of Michigan fans when they lost to Appalachian State earlier this year. If the Chargers do make the playoffs this year, there is a good chance they will not get a bye so they'll probably have to play in the wildcard round and nothing would be finer than beating up on the Steelers in the playoffs...again!

You guys got a good receiver that didn't get a chance in Miami. He is a class act and I was sad to see him go, but I must admit, he is in a much better place now.
