Eager Chambers goes to work

SAN DIEGO -- About the only thing longer than Chris Chambers' cross-country flight was the smile on his face.

The receiver the Chargers acquired from Miami on Tuesday arrived in San Diego around midnight and was on the practice field Wednesday afternoon after spending much of the morning meeting with receivers coach James Lofton

"The excitement just keeps building," Chambers said after Wednesday's practice. "Once I stepped out here today, I knew it was for real."

Chambers spent time acclimating himself with the offense and Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and said the offense is very similar to the system in Miami, where former Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron is the head coach.

Because of Chambers' familiarity with system, Chargers coach Norv Turner said he expects Chambers to be ready to play when the Chargers host Houston on Oct. 28. The Chargers have a bye this Sunday.

"There are a few words that end up being a little different, but the most important thing is the routes are the same, the techniques are the same and the physical parts are the same," Turner said. "I don't think it will take him and Philip long to get on the same page."

Revolving door

Chambers played under four different head coaches, six different offensive coordinators and 10 different quarterbacks in seven seasons in Miami. Ironically, Turner's two seasons in Miami (2002-03) represent his longest stint under one coordinator while Jay Fiedler (2001-04) was the only quarterback he worked with for a substantial time period.

"I felt like I haven't been able to really maximize my abilities because of that," Chambers said.

Et cetera

Coach Norv Turner plans to spend the Sunday watching football. He noted that he'll be able to watch both of the team's next two opponents (Houston and Minnesota) on television. ... New acquisition Chris Chambers will wear No. 89 with the Chargers. He wore No. 84 in Miami but that number belongs to WR Craig Davis.

Chopper Riding Fin Fan wrote on Oct 18, 2007 11:34 AM:You Charger fans got a very good receiver in Chambers. Good Luck Chris! Oh, and thanks for the second round pick, we need all the help we can get in Miami. Good luck on the rest of the season Bolts!

San Diego Dolphin Fan wrote on Oct 18, 2007 12:20 PM:Chris is a class-act! He is a great person and he plays hard. He will make some incredible, I cant believe he freakin caught that type catches, but will drop easy routine ones. He can be a star if he focuses on those routine catches. With stability on offense and from a QB, this guy could be a steal for you. I am glad for Chris, he goes to a very talent rich team and to the city I live in. Thank you for your gret memories as a Dolphin. You were so much fun to root for, Now go get to work and win a Super Bowl!

Chris wrote on Oct 18, 2007 2:18 PM:We will miss you in Miami, but I wanted to all the best. Chris Chambers is a great player and an even better person. You Charger fans are gonna love him!

10 games til the playoffs 9 til 9 in a row wrote on Oct 18, 2007 6:02 PM:He is durable missing only 2 games with the fins hopefully it rubs off on our other recievers

Lorspup wrote on Oct 18, 2007 8:38 PM: I echo the sentiments above. I hate to see my fins crumble, definitely unchartered ground for Miami, but even if Chris doesn't meet the lofty expectations placed on him in South Florida, he should bring plenty enough to the table in SoCal. Go Bolts!

Zack wrote on Oct 19, 2007 4:31 AM:Wes Chandler was no Johnny Jefferson. Johnny Jefferson is the best wide receiver that I have seen play for the Chargers. He had velcro like hands and he caught just about every ball thrown his way.

Marko wrote on Oct 19, 2007 7:11 AM:Dolphin fans have class, some thing the raider fans DON'T.!!!No one respects thugs anymore.Maybe if they became less worried about their image and let their team do the talking they might get some respect and someone besides a raider backer just might have something good to say about them..

Mike wrote on Oct 20, 2007 5:12 AM:Anybody Remember a guy named Tony "TD" Martin? I think he played in the last play-off game we won right? where did he go? "Welcome to San Diego Chris" "Thanks Fins" Now the Bolt is intact and Back!! and eli still sucks!! Crawford High 81'

Sean C. wrote on Oct 20, 2007 5:53 PM:As I recall reading the fish wrap back in the Humphries to Martin touchdown days, Martin came from MIAMI and was considered just above average then he studied his arse off watching film of Jerry Rice And that following season a star was born. A star that helped us to the SB. I`m feeling a sense of Deja Vu But this time around we have 12 probowlers on the Bolt roster & the NFC ain`t that good.
