Ramona wildfire forces about 11,000 evacuations
By: North County Times | ∞
NORTH COUNTY ---- A local emergency was called today after a 3,000-acre wildfire fueled by Santa Ana winds burned on both sides of Highway 78 near Witch Creek Road and spread toward Ramona, causing road closures, power outages and the evacuations of some 11,000 residents, authorities said.
The blaze, dubbed the Highway 78 fire, was reported shortly before 1 p.m., has left Highway 78 closed between Old Julian Highway and Highway 79, and Highway 79 closed between Highway 78 and Highway 76, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Structures in the Witch Creek area ---- near the intersection of Highway 78 and Old Julian Highway ---- are immediately threatened, and several have burned, authorities said. The fire, which has crossed Highway 78 in several places, is burning west toward Ramona and the San Diego Country Estates area, prompting further evacuations, they said.
The Reverse 911 system was used to notify 5,461 Country Estates residents, and additional evacuations are being considered, county spokeswoman Holly Crawford said.
An evacuation center has been established at Ramona High School, 15500 Espola Road, sheriff's Lt. Phil Brust said.
The center, set up by the American Red Cross, will remain open "as long as there is a need" and could remain in place overnight, spokeswoman Gayle Falkenthal said. Lodging, food, drinks and basic health services will be provided, she said.
Evacuation points for large animals and livestock have also been set up at the Lakeside rodeo grounds, at Highway 67 and Magnolia Avenue in Lakeside, said Tammy Glenn, public information officer for the county. Meanwhile, an evacuation center for pets and smaller animals has been established by the Escondido Humane Society at Poway High School, she said.
For general information on animal services, call 211. For emergencies, call county animal services at 619-767-2675.
Also in the area, a motorcyclist was killed while riding on Wildcat Canyon Road, west of San Diego Country Estates. The collision was reported 5:46 p.m. when the motorcyclist crashed into rocks near Mile Marker 12.
Utility crews have also shut down power to 379 customers in Ramona, Santa Ysabel, San Diego Country Estates, the La Jolla Reservation and Mesa Grande, San Diego Gas & Electric reported.
"It's just to make it safe for firefighters and our folks," said Don Parent, spokesman for the company. "As soon as we check and make sure it's safe, we'll re-energize them."
The flames are whipped by 40 to 45 mph winds, with gusts reaching 70 mph, the National Weather Service reported. The gusts are too strong for firefighting aircraft to safely fly, said Battalion Chief Kelly Zombro, of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The fire is burning between the areas burned by the 2003 Cedar fire, the 273,000-acre blaze that destroyed homes and took the life of one firefighter, Zombro said.
The fire has forked into two flanks, both of which are headed toward Ramona and have the potential to spread to Escondido, he said.
Firefighters are also working to douse a 500-acre fire that was reported this morning in East County, near Tecate. The Reverse 911 system has been used to notify 760 homes, authorities said. The fire is heading southwest toward Tecate, and residents on the U.S. side of the border have been required to evacuate. The fire has overrun Emory Road in the area and has crossed Highway 188.
Smoke from both of the fires could be seen as far away as Del Mar.
Information on the fires is available at www.sdcountyemergency.com. Residents can call 211 for non-emergency calls related to the fire. Cell phone calls should be directed to 858-300-1211.

To the people who got that warning or knock at the door - I wish you a safe night and I hope that your homes and belongings are alright. I think that we are ALL hoping and praying that this fire will be contained soon. I wish the best of luck to all firefighters getting up in the air tomorrow. I hope that the winds let up long enough for you guys to contain at least some of the blaze. Heidi wrote on Oct 22, 2007 1:11 AM:If you might be in the path, and have some time to prepare, consider doing the following: 1) Secure your children and loved ones as a first priority. Have each person pack enough clothes for several days. Don't forget medications, toiletries, etc, contact lenses, etc. - Fill up some containers with water, and bring a selection of bottled water, formula, other beverages and food-stuffs. - Get a flashlight for each family member - Get a blanket for each family member - Make sure everyone has a jacket or sweatshirt, and something other than house slippers or flip flops. 2) If you have pets - secure them in a room so they won't run off. Have your animal carriers, leashes, pet food, pet medications ready to go with them. If you have cats, especially, - get them in their carriers early! {I spent almost 20 minutes looking for my cat after I got the knock on the door from the police saying to get out now.) 3) Check you evacuation car(s) and make sure they start and have enough gas to get you out of the evacuation zone. Move your packed items to the car - but make sure you leave room for your passengers & animals. If you have two adults and two cars - decide who will be driving whom and agree where you will be meeting (evacuation center, relatives house, hotel, etc.) Still have time? 4) Gather up important documentts: - Vital Documents (birth certificates, passports, etc.) - Important paperwork (bank statements & billing statements, Laptops & hard-drives, etc.) - even the most recent statement will at least give you account numbers (if all goes up in smoke). - Grab your family photo albums and a few choice framed photos Still have time? Use your digital camera and take pictures of every room in your house, from all angles. If you lose your home to fire, you'll will have to 'remember' everything you owned. These photos will help. Still have time? Check out the exterior of your home. Are there any combustables that can be quickly removed that are currently backed against your house? Do something about them. Still have time? Gather up the smaller valuables (such as jewelry, or other 'things' you'd hate to lose and have room for in your car(s). Still have time? Consider leaving early. Avoid the grid-lock. - Family photos

The schools were closed, and even Halloween was canceled in '67 because everyone was needed at home to try to save their property. It felt like the end of the world at that time, but the entire town having to evacuate sounds a lot more serious. jackson wrote on Oct 23, 2007 9:33 AM:Here's what I read on Ramona Sentinel: Ramona looks like a ghost town, there is just debris all over the streets, nothing is open, reports Hal Gansert, a Country Estates resident who also confirms previous spotter reports that no homes in Country Estates proper have burned. The condition of structures around the west end of Ramona is good, said Gansert. There are no confirmed instances of structure damage in Mt. Woodson. Fire raging behind Montecito Road skirted Mt. Woodson Elementary, sparing the school. Many homes along Highland Valley Road are reported destroyed but the Sentinel has no independent confirmation.

The problem is that the air quality is so bad, and now parts of Ramona don't have water or power. Ramona is still very much in fire danger with the Witch fire only 1% contained and winds gusting up to 45mph. We were evacuated from the San Diego Country Estates Sunday around 5pm.

Your family is probably fine since no reports of injuries in ramona are coming out. We're all still waiting to learn about our homes. Rick wrote on Oct 23, 2007 1:41 PM:Got another report from someone else. Mussey Grade between 67 and Dos Picos looks ok as of 1:30 pm. There is a new fire that started atop Mt. Woodson but there are tankers on it.
Rick wrote on Oct 23, 2007 1:55 PM:I don't think that Ramona proper or the west end is in immediate danger right now from what I have heard. I did just hear on KUSI news that Wildcat Canyon is under mandatory evacuation. The west end looks ok right now based upon what people onsite are telling me.
J. Hernandez wrote on Oct 23, 2007 8:34 PM:Does anybody have any news on Ramona and Julian. Apparently an evacuation was issued to residents in Julian. ( http://www.sdcountyemergency.com/) More than one source has made mention of the winds shifting to the east and pushing the WITCH fire back towards Ramona, Barona, and now Julian?
Carolyn wrote on Oct 24, 2007 5:50 AM:Thanks so much Rick for the update. I recently heard that the winds were shifting and pushing the fire back towards Ramona, is that true?
Terry in VA wrote on Oct 24, 2007 8:12 AM:This blog sure has quietened own after the last couple days. Is no news good news around Ramona? I'm not familiar with the area .. what is the name of the neghborhood southeast of Ramona at north end of Barona Reservation? Are there burned homes in that neighborhood ? Is fire headed that way ? TY Prayers and thoughts for all fire effected people.
Thankful wrote on Oct 24, 2007 8:41 AM:I live about 20 miles from the closest fire. My friends and family have been affected by the devastation. I have spoken with them and seen responses. I am thankful for the many who have opened their arms and hearts to those who have lost so much. Places like Qualcomm stadium, and Delmar Race Tracks, where the crowds of people are volunteering and helping each other. It's a community in need, and community efforts to help are seen everywhere. It is not a time to complain, but to be thankful and help.
Leticia wrote on Oct 24, 2007 8:59 AM:Any information on burned homes in Ramona, San Diego Country Estates in particular?
Rick wrote on Oct 24, 2007 10:00 AM:I don't believe that any homes burned in the Estates. The fire blazed through the area near 67 and Magnolia. Mt. Woodson Elementary is ok. I still have power, cable and phone at my home at Mussey Grade and Dos Picos Park Rd (by checking with my computer from my evacuation place in Oceaside). I understand that RMWD restored power to their pumps so that there is water in the pipes, but no storage capacity yet. I'm waiting for 67 to open so I can get up there and help out.
Kristi wrote on Oct 24, 2007 10:41 AM:Does any one know where the Shangri La ranch that burned in Ramona is located?
jackson wrote on Oct 24, 2007 10:49 AM:Here's what I read on Ramona Sentinel: Ramona looks like a ghost town, there is just debris all over the streets, nothing is open, reports Hal Gansert, a Country Estates resident who also confirms previous spotter reports that no homes in Country Estates proper have burned.
Healthy San Diegan wrote on Oct 24, 2007 1:59 PM:Hello my fellow San Diegans, There is a SERIOUS question that needs to be asked. How did these fires start? 2 started from downed transformers... fine. 1 was started by some kids after being let out of school. Okay. These are 3 fires out of 12 which are scorching Southern California from Malibu to Mexico! Several have "suspicious origin" according to the fire dept.! This is just another fine example of how we cannot defend against terrorism or anything else here in the US when ALL of resources are spent on a FAKE war. It's a giant shell game to distract you from the REAL dangers that we face here at home. WAKE UP!
Blair wrote on Oct 24, 2007 2:39 PM:Healthy San Diegan, people are losing their homes and you want to argue politics? Have you no shame? The best I can offer those of you with questions about your home is this. If you have an answering machine, call your house, if the answering machine picks up, things are looking up. If not, it could be the power is out again, the phone lines are damaged, or your home is damaged. It's not a definite answer, but it is a clue. Good luck everyone.

Ron/Ramona wrote on Oct 24, 2007 3:35 PM:I'm curious as to why Ramona is still under mandatory evacuation. This was the first area evacuted and seems to be the last to be allowed back when the reports seem to indicate the homes made it through the fire OK. Very very little is being said about Ramona or San Diego Country Estates by any of the news channels. I understand power and water are an issue. This was supposwed to resolv3ed yesterday or early this morning but still no word from anyone as to the status or why this utilities have not been restored. And the news channels hardly mention Ramona at all
Rick wrote on Oct 24, 2007 3:54 PM:Agreed Blair. There will be plenty of time to debate the politics after the emergency is solved. I've been recently told be someone in Ramona that overall things have improved quite a bit. I'm waiting for 67 to open. As soon as I can get up there I'll post and let everyone know.
Thankful wrote on Oct 24, 2007 6:19 PM:I agree with you Blair. Healthy San Diegan..you need to understand, things happen, no matter where you are. Now is not the time to voice your political opinions. If you truly are from San Diego, than you surely must feel the pain that is flooding Southern California. Maybe you should try to reach out, and help the many who need a helping hand.
Colin in Bressi Ranch, Carlsbad wrote on Oct 24, 2007 7:45 PM:My in Laws are here from Ramona. they tried getting back in today around 3pm and were turned back. Anyone got any idea when they may open Ramona as they are frustrated and worried about thier horses.
Rick wrote on Oct 24, 2007 8:08 PM:Well I've been trying to get an answer why people are not being let into Ramona. I can't get a straight answer. On one hand I see the folks on Channel 10 news painting a picture of doom and gloom, showing the news anchor 'Jackie Wang' saying that the reason for the continued evacuation is the fire behind her, and on the other hand a call to the Ramona Sheriffs Department states that there are no fires in the Ramona proper area and the reason is the lack of water (a really poor excuse in my opinion). So what's going on??? I would hate to think that we have some political posturing combined with sensational misinformation. I would suggest that all Ramonians start leaning on our officials to actually state a reason why we are still kept out of town (incidentally while some other are being let in). I've been asking for an exact reason and no one has one.

Gloria in Las Vegas wrote on Oct 25, 2007 9:50 AM:My daughter, son in law and grandson evacuated along with the rest of Ramona. They, too, would like to come home, but the news this morning said that because the population of Ramona left their sprinkler systems on when they evacuated, the resevoiris now dry. I BEG YOUR PARDON, would their sprinklers be on normally??????? Please give those people some assistance.
Kristi wrote on Oct 25, 2007 10:48 AM:Does any one know when the people of Ramona will be able to return to the city? Has the fire moved away from the area? Does any one know if any homes were burnt on Creelman Lane?

xshawk wrote on Oct 26, 2007 7:06 AM:Gloria, the pump that supplies water to the Ramona reservoir went down... the sprinklers and any other water used up there caused the reservoir to drain... Now, if my info is accurate they have the pump back up, but regardless until they can refill the reservoir they don't have the ability to charge the fire main and fight fires if one should crop up... it sounds silly the way some news agencies are explaining it... don't think that they are keeping people out just because they don't have drinking water... think of it this way, if you were responsible for the people of Ramona, would you let them back in if you did not have the ability to fight a fire?

Does anyone know if any of Orange is left. If you go up Magnolia, to pile, and left on Orange, and hit the dirt road, it would be the lst house on the left.
