There is 0% containment and the fire’s spread is moving westerly towards Otay Lake. Firefighters are focusing all efforts on protection of life, property, and firefighter safety. SDGE's Southwest major transmission line remains shut down. The Witch Fire is 12,000 acres. There is a mandatory evacuation in Scripps Ranch. Fifty homes destroyed in Poway, 70 homes destroyed in Escondido, 6 homes destroyed in Rancho Santa Fe, an unknown number of structures destroyed in Rancho Bernardo. The fire is spreading in a west and south direction. The fire has crossed I-15 at Lake Hodges heading southwest to the communities of Carmel Mountain Ranch, Mira Mesa, and 4-S Ranch and south toward Peutz Valley, Harbison Canyon, the western part of Alpine. The head of the fire is burning in the same path as the Cedar Fire in 2003. ALL Airtankers and helicopters are currently flying including the DC-10 supertanker from CAL FIRE. Citizens along the fire's edge are requested to stay away from any area that has helicopters or airtankers dropping retardant or water. These aircraft are trying to protect structures and have to be very cautious when civilians are on the ground nearby. Damage Assessment Teams have been ordered. We should get better numbers on number of homes damaged or destroyed once they are deployed. www.sandiegocountyemergency.com

Along Reche Road between Scooter Lane and I-15, firefighters were working to save seven homes about 4:30 p.m. as thick smoke engulfed the road from both sides. Some CalFire firefighters said the fire was on both sides of Interstate 15 when they arrived by late afternoon. BUt none knew the current status as they were busy evacuating the few remaining residents. The roadsides along Reche Road were charred in many places and tiny spot flames could be seen. my mom got into her place on tecalote on the pala mesa golf course and had 5 mins to evacuate. according to a friend who got back in the trailer park close by (on reche) is burned. our guess is that the places on tecalote are gone too but we have no confirmation. the closest confirmation is the map on www.sdcountyemergency.com - here is a link to that map - http://www.sdcountyemergency.com/newsreleases/102207_1630_allfires.pdf overlaying with a google map makes it look like most of the pala mesa golf resort might be burned?

Reardon wrote on Oct 22, 2007 8:33 PM:Ch. 9 has confirmed that the Navy had 8 helos on the tarmac awaiting orders from CalFire to launch today. CalFire asked for only 2 Helos -- and six remained on the ground. This is criminal. Last time, in the Cedar fire, CDF/CalFire said that the Navy copter pilots (who land on the back of pitching destroyers in bad seas and high winds) were not "qualified." Absolute stupidity! Further, Navy planes are much more powerful than civilian planes and can fly in much higher winds. Can you imagine a copter pilot who flew in dust storms in Iraq being told he was not qualified to fly in high winds in San Diego County? In the Cedar fire then, Ron Roberts of the County Board of Supervisors said CDF had a "turf battle" and never asked for Navy help that was available. Ron Roberts said that CDF/CalFire told him "They (the Navy) don't ask for our help in battle readiness, and we don't ask for their help in fighting fires!" Ron Roberts also said that CalFire has a list of commercial firefighting planes "available," and they are reluctant to "jump" the commercial planes by using the Navy! CDF/CalFire is losing my support with such stupidity. If your home was threatened, would you put up with such activity? I think not. I thought we had this one worked out after the Cedar Fire! The military has HUGE assets, but as in the Katrina kerfuffle, the State must ask for help -- then it must accept it!

A very useful thing was that radios broadcast what to do if the fire came at your home. Hope your radio stations are doing the same, but here is what they told us in Canberra: (1) put on your sturdiest hiking boots, thickest pants, hat, and a coat; (2) keep a bucket of water handy; (3) pull curtains away from windows; (4) watch for the direction of the fire; (5) when fire is very near use the bucket of water to soak your coat/ hat/ pants; (6) stay in your house if at all possible but if it starts to burn, LEAVE IN THE DIRECTION FROM WHICH THE FIRE CAME; (7) DO NOT GO BACK IN TO A BURNING HOUSE -- most of the Canberra fatalities were people who had gotten out of the house but went back for family photos. I'm praying for you all, and hope to hear from my niece's family soon...
