Alerts relating to the fire: Evacuation scam in Vista
By: North County Times | ∞
The North County Times is getting unconfirmed reports of a scam in which residents of a Vista senior mobile home park were were visited by people who claimed to be authorities ordering an evacuation. The visitors reportedly delivered fliers telling seniors they must be out of their homes by 7 p.m.
As of Monday evening, there were no ordered evacuations in Vista. For up to date evacuation information, check back www.nctimes.com.
Restaurants needed to help with shelter food in Escondido
Capt. Derek Strickland with the Salvation Army in Escondido is seeking restaurants or commercial business who could help cook meals to serve in the Escondido shelter.
The food must be commercially prepared (not home-made.)
Capt. Strickland can be reached at 760-532-8814 or at 760-745-8616.
Red Cross training fire volunteers at San Diego church
People interested in volunteering at one of the five American Red Cross evacuation centers set up around the county to serve those affected by wildfires in the county are invited to receive training at a San Diego church.
Volunteers are asked to report to the Horizon Christian Fellowship Church, 5331 Mount Alisan Drive, in San Diego. The church opened to volunteers at noon and will remain open as long as people continue to arrive, said Katherine Lewis, a spokeswoman with the American Red Cross.
"At this point because there are so many shelter open there is a great need," Lewis said. "There will always be a time when extra hands are needed."

Carlsbad Community Church opening for fire refugees
There are reports that Pastor Max Vague is opening up Carlsbad Community Church for fire refugees as of 9:00 AM October 22. The address is 3175 Harding Street, Carlsbad California, 92008.
Limit cell phone calls; use text messaging
Please limit cell phone calls to help emergency response to the wildfires. But feel free to send text messages.
That's the message to San Diego County residents from emergency officials and Verizon Wireless.
The County of San Diego's Office of Emergency Preparedness issued an advisory Monday morning urging residents not to make unnecessary cell phone calls, to keep channels clear for emergency use.
In addition, reverse-911 evacuation calls are not being made to cell phones. So cell phone-only residents need to keep tuned to news reports to know if the fires are threatening them.
Text messages are fine, said Ken Muche, a spokesman for Verizon Wireless. "Text messages will not clog up our network at all, so the emergency crews will not be impacted by trading texts."
No word was available immediately from other cell phone providers about using text messaging.
Residents not evacuating asked to stay off major highways
Officials are asking all residents who are not under evacuation orders to stay off major highways today to make way for evacuees and other personnel.
Miramar will not be used as evacuation site
MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. -- Due to the unpredictability of the fires, MCAS Miramar will not be used as an evacuation site for residents in the surrounding areas. All residents should follow evacuation guidelines established by San Diego authorities.

There is no reason for this fire to stop until Wednesday when a storm comes in from up north so watching that pattern it is too much for ANYONE to try to control.

Jessica wrote on Oct 22, 2007 11:33 PM:From the Rancho Santa Fe Fire website at of 9:50 tonight: Rancho Santa Fe is currently fighting two flanks of the fire. One is burning in the El Camino del Norte/Aliso Canyon area. They are trying to prevent it from entering the Escondido Creek area, which could enable the fire to burn into Encinitas and Olivenhain. The second is burning into the Fairbanks Ranch area. This flank has calmed down and mop up operations are underway. So far the fire has burned approximately 4,400 acres in the Rancho Santa Fe District. There are a reported 9 structures destroyed, but that number has not yet been confirmed. We hope to have more specific numbers and locations tomorrow after we are able to do a damage assessment.
