I live 2 blocks from there and yet I see no news coverage of this fire on your site. We really need to be kept informed of what is happening and sure wish your reporters would stay on this story. They also mentioned another fire in temecula, but did not say where? Please get some info on what is happening in Temecula.

Bad Reporting... wrote on Oct 24, 2007 11:43 AM:I can not believe how bad the desimination of information is in our local area. Every posting here is asking questions with zero answers to help those with loved ones. The challenge that will ultimately come from these fires is "How will, not can, the media serve us in the future?" Only two reporters in North county from NCTimes is ridiculous, and they would rather report on social events. Get a clue people, we have not intered the new millenium with our less than mediocre information from companies we expect to have up to the minute service. I feel sorry for the public at large that relies on these media services here in San Diego.

NCT Staff Writer David Garrick wrote on Oct 24, 2007 11:48 AM:Fallbrook fire still dangerous FALLBROOK ---- "Extremely dangerous fire activity" raced through this area after midnight Wednesday, threatening an additional 400 homes in the area of the shifting northern boundry in Rainbow Glen near De Luz, officials said Wednesday. The loss of homes ---- if any ---- inside the new fire lines was unknown late Wednesday morning, but fire spokesman David Shew said he was told that crews were able to save homes. The projected fire lines moved about 2 miles northwest, crossing the Santa Margarita river bed and establishing itself in the vegetation in the drainage area. "This moved so fast last night," Shew said. "We shifted all our resources up north." Fire crews are using a bull dozer to create a fire break in the north and west areas of Fallbrook. On top of the advance into new burn areas, fofficials were also concerned about swirling winds as the weather pattern reverses itself and begins to blow wind from the coast. That has officials watching for the fire to run back over areas it has already been through, and fueling itself with whatever remains there. But the "reburn factor" is relatively low, fire official Kelly Dreesmann said Wednesday morning. "Most of the areas already have pretty complete burns," Dreesmann said. Damage estimates as of Wednesday morning stayed at about 206 homes lost, most of them in the Valley Oaks mobile home park off Reche Road, north of the Pala Mesa Resort.

Shayna Chabner, staff writer wrote on Oct 24, 2007 12:05 PM:Several readers have been wondering why they're not being allowed back into evacuated areas after the fire has blown through. Staff writer Paul Sisson said he was told this morning by Sheriff's Deputy Steve McNamara that looks can be deceiving. "It's not over yet. Just because you see blue sky and you don't see any flames, that doesn't mean the fire is out," McNamara said, noting that there is still a risk of fires kicking back up from hot embers and that it's still dangerous for residents to walk through hot rubble and unsafe structures. He said it's his understanding that commanders are meeting this morning to try to decide which areas countywide can be reopened to evacuated residents.

We have a group that is actively working on a "Re-Entry Plan" and we hope to be able to release the plan within the next day. Actual return will probably be between 24 and 48 hours away for those folks in the unburned areas and longer for those in the areas where there is fire damage. It's not just a matter of the fire. FPUD has had damage to their water purification equipment and we need to make sure that water will be available. Power lines are down across roads, trees are down due to the high winds, etc. We need to make sure that people can safely return to their homes. I recommend that people watch the reputable news sources, like the local network news. That is how we will get the information out."

NCT reporter Marga Kellogg wrote on Oct 24, 2007 1:03 PM:Poomacha fire update VALLEY CENTER ---- Driven by Santa Ana winds gusting to 40 miles per hour, the southwestern flank of the Poomacha fire accelerated down Mount Rodriguez this morning toward the northeastern side of the Paradise Mountain neighborhood of Valley Center. But by noon, the fire had turned west and was moving swiftly through the unpopulated lowlands of the county's Hell Hole Canyon open space preserve. The fire's advance toward homes was slowed substantially by lack of fuel in areas that burned in the 2003 Paradise fire and by crews who guarded scattered homes in the Hell Creek basin. About 40 homes along Marshall Way, Ricardo Ranch Road and Carlatta Lane appeared to have escaped immediate danger as relatively low flames were having trouble getting up the hill toward the residences. Sheriffs deputies worked hard to enforce an evacuation order, climbing fences at times as they went door-to-door through Paradise Mountain, an isolated rural community of roughly 400 homes. An edge of the Witch Creek fire that was burning on Rancho Guejito remained a threat to the southeast ridgeline of the community. Homeowners who refused to leave were permitted to remain; deputies tied yellow tape to their fences to alert potential rescue workers. Officials were particularly eager to evacuate lingering residents of Skyline Ranch, a retirement community of about 200 homes that sits in the heart of the neighborhood and was the site of massive fire protection efforts during the Paradise fire. -- Dan McSwain 12:05 p.m. Wednesday

Paul Robbins Jr., a base spokesman. No fire-related injuries have been reported, Robbins said. The base also announced around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday that northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 5 were reopened to all traffic. All gates to enter and exit the base also were reopened to traffic, except for the Fallbrook gate. That gate is open to incoming traffic, but only emergency vehicles are allowed to exit through that gate. The largest fire on the base, the Horno fire, has burned 6,000 acres and is 10 percent contained. The Wilcox fire, which initially was called the Margarita fire, has burned 200 acres and is 80 percent contained. The smallest of the blazes, the Del Mar fire, burned two acres and is 100 percent contained, Robbins said.

They have an update on their web page that says: Due to the fire conditions in the Inland areas of San Diego, the Wild Animal Park is closed today (Wednesday, October 24). The current plan is to re-open on Thursday, October 25. Pre-purchased tickets can be exchanged for admittance to the San Diego Zoo by visiting the Zoo’s Guest Relations window. As of 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, the Wild Animal Park has started assessment and clean up efforts from the fire and wind damage. Of the over 3,500 animals that reside at the Park, two animals (a clapper rail and a kiang) were lost due to complications from the fire. More than 600 acres surrounding the Wild Animal Park were burned. These were open buffer zone areas and not exhibit space. The California condors and other endangered bird species, as well as other mammals, have been returned to their homes while others are in the process of being moved. The rest of the animals remain safe, secure, and have weathered the firestorm well. The Wild Animal Park did lose one of the empty condor breeding facilities to the fire as well as a storage facility containing Festival of Lights event materials. Winds have damaged trees throughout the Park, but again the animals and exhibits have weathered the storm. A core group of employees is on hand to care for the wildlife. Other employees and some contractors are currently assisting with clean up and restoration efforts."
