Bridal Bazaar set for Oct. 28

DEL MAR -- The fall Bridal Bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.

More than 200 wedding event specialists will exhibit their wares and services, including photographers, caterers, DJs, bakers, wedding dress and tuxedo shops and more. Events will include prize-drawings, cake-tastings and fashion shows at 11:30 a.m., 1 and 2:45 p.m. Admission is $10.

Harvest Festival rescheduled

DEL MAR -- Because of the fires in San Diego County, the 32nd annual Harvest Festival, originally planned for Oct. 26 through 28 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, has been rescheduled. The event will be held Nov. 9 through 11 at the fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.

The festival will feature musical performances, gourmet food sampling, live entertainment and more than 300 American artists and craftspeople showcasing their unique, handmade works.

Festival hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 11. Admission is $8; $7 for seniors ages 62 and older; $4 for youths age 13 to 17; and free for kids ages 12 and younger with an adult. One ticket is good for all three days.

Tutoring program offered for PUSD students

POWAY -- Members of the Poway Community Leadership Institute are developing a free tutoring program for Poway Unified School District students who need one-on-one assistance. The program will be open to students at all grade levels.

Tutoring will take place at the Poway branch of the San Diego County Library, 13137 Poway Road. Interested parents and potential volunteer tutors are invited to meet with the PCLI team to discuss the program. Members of the PCLI team, which includes Annette Gonzalez, senior management analyst for the city of Poway, and Nazem Agha, owner of Carpet Country Flooring in Poway, will be available from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 26 and 28 in the Meeting Room at the Poway Library. Barbershop quartet contest on tap

ESCONDIDO -- The Music Men a cappella chorus will hold its annual Novice Barbershop Quartet Contest at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Salvation Army facility, 1301 Las Villas Way.

The participating quartets were formed by members of The Music Men Chorus. Established quartets and The Music Men Chorus also will perform. Admission is free. Refreshments will be served.Ý

Poet to perform reading at CSUSM

SAN MARCOS -- Cal State San Marcos and the World Literary Series will present a reading by poet K. Silem Mohammad, author of "Deer Head Nation" and other books, at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 in the Grand Salon (Room 113) of the M. Gordon Clarke Field House on the CSUSM campus, 333 S. Twin Oaks Valley Road.

Health care reform is the topic

CARLSBAD -- The Humanistic Jewish Congregation of San Diego will host a talk by Mary Crowley of the League of Women Voters at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 4 at the Woman's Club of Carlsbad, 3320 Monroe St.

Crowley will discuss the various competing health proposals on the table after the veto of the latest health care bill by Gov. Schwarzenegger. A buffet luncheon will be served. Guest admission is $5.

Floral design forum planned

CARLSBAD -- The Palomar District of the California Garden Clubs will hold a Floral Design Forum at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Woman's Club of Carlsbad, 3320 Monroe St.

Velma West, an award-winning National Garden Club designer, will create designs in her usual unique, daring and innovative style.

The Floral Design Forum is held the first Monday of each month from October through May. Cost is $8 per program. Reservations are not required.

Show, auction to benefit cancer foundation

The Danny Turner Cancer Foundation provides financial and family support to young adults in the San Diego area who are dealing with cancer.

Walk-athon to benefit local family

SAN MARCOS -- The "Sight for Christian" family walk-athon to benefit the family of 4-year-old Christian Lee of San Marcos will be held Nov. 11 at San Elijo Park.

At birth, Christian was diagnosed with an extremely rare eye disease called congenital glaucoma. He was born without a lens in one eye and had a cataract in his other eye, which was later removed. Both eyes have no color because he also lacks an iris. Insurance did not cover the artificial cornea surgery he had recently. It also will not cover the ongoing therapy sessions he will need. The total expenses will add up to more than $220,000.

The walk is less than one mile around the park. Registration fee of $15 per walker includes a T-shirt.

Tribal liaison named at CSUSM

SAN MARCOS -- Tishmall A. Turner of Pauma Valley has been appointed tribal liaison for Cal State San Marcos.

Beginning Nov. 1, Turner will be responsible for coordinating activities that link the university to the many tribal communities in the region. She will serve on the president's Native Advisory Council and will guide the campus on university and tribal protocols. She will also work with the faculty to establish a center dedicated to the study of California Indian culture and sovereignty.

Turner comes to CSUSM from the Southern California Tribal Chairmen's Association where she served as resource center program director.

Food items sought for Thanksgiving baskets

SAN DIEGO --Jewish Family Service of San Diego is seeking donations of items for Thanksgiving baskets for families in need.

Nonperishable food items such as gravy, canned vegetables, pie mix, stuffing, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, as well as cash donations and grocery gift cards are needed.

Donations can delivered or mailed to Jewish Family Service's headquarters, the Turk Family Center, at 8804 Balboa Ave., San Diego, CA 92123. Donations will be accepted through Nov. 7. Monetary donations also can be made at http://www.jfssd.org.
