Bad Reporting... wrote on Oct 24, 2007 11:43 AM:I can not believe how bad the desimination of information is in our local area. Every posting here is asking questions with zero answers to help those with loved ones. The challenge that will ultimately come from these fires is "How will, not can, the media serve us in the future?" Only two reporters in North county from NCTimes is ridiculous, and they would rather report on social events. Get a clue people, we have not intered the new millenium with our less than mediocre information from companies we expect to have up to the minute service. I feel sorry for the public at large that relies on these media services here in San Diego.

NCT Staff Writer David Garrick wrote on Oct 24, 2007 11:48 AM:Fallbrook fire still dangerous FALLBROOK ---- "Extremely dangerous fire activity" raced through this area after midnight Wednesday, threatening an additional 400 homes in the area of the shifting northern boundry in Rainbow Glen near De Luz, officials said Wednesday. The loss of homes ---- if any ---- inside the new fire lines was unknown late Wednesday morning, but fire spokesman David Shew said he was told that crews were able to save homes. The projected fire lines moved about 2 miles northwest, crossing the Santa Margarita river bed and establishing itself in the vegetation in the drainage area. "This moved so fast last night," Shew said. "We shifted all our resources up north." Fire crews are using a bull dozer to create a fire break in the north and west areas of Fallbrook. On top of the advance into new burn areas, fofficials were also concerned about swirling winds as the weather pattern reverses itself and begins to blow wind from the coast. That has officials watching for the fire to run back over areas it has already been through, and fueling itself with whatever remains there. But the "reburn factor" is relatively low, fire official Kelly Dreesmann said Wednesday morning. "Most of the areas already have pretty complete burns," Dreesmann said. Damage estimates as of Wednesday morning stayed at about 206 homes lost, most of them in the Valley Oaks mobile home park off Reche Road, north of the Pala Mesa Resort.

Shayna Chabner, staff writer wrote on Oct 24, 2007 12:05 PM:Several readers have been wondering why they're not being allowed back into evacuated areas after the fire has blown through. Staff writer Paul Sisson said he was told this morning by Sheriff's Deputy Steve McNamara that looks can be deceiving. "It's not over yet. Just because you see blue sky and you don't see any flames, that doesn't mean the fire is out," McNamara said, noting that there is still a risk of fires kicking back up from hot embers and that it's still dangerous for residents to walk through hot rubble and unsafe structures. He said it's his understanding that commanders are meeting this morning to try to decide which areas countywide can be reopened to evacuated residents.

Smoke in Temecula wrote on Oct 24, 2007 12:17 PM:The smoke over Temecula from the Palomar fire is getting worse. The ground is glowing orange from the sunight streaming through it. It has become very eerie. Yesterday we could see the smoke rising from the back side of the mountain and could ascertain that the fire was still quite a ways away. However, there's so much smoke now, getting thicker and hugging the mountain, that there's no way to make a self assessment on its condition. What updates do you have on the Palomar mountain fire?

Peg wrote on Oct 24, 2007 12:26 PM:This CURRENT info comes direct from a top ranking fire official regarding coming back to FALLBROOK: "No, we are not letting people back in yet. We have a group that is actively working on a "Re-Entry Plan" and we hope to be able to release the plan within the next day. Actual return will probably be between 24 and 48 hours away for those folks in the unburned areas and longer for those in the areas where there is fire damage. It's not just a matter of the fire. FPUD has had damage to their water purification equipment and we need to make sure that water will be available. Power lines are down across roads, trees are down due to the high winds, etc. We need to make sure that people can safely return to their homes. I recommend that people watch the reputable news sources, like the local network news. That is how we will get the information out."

NCT reporter Marga Kellogg wrote on Oct 24, 2007 1:03 PM:Poomacha fire update VALLEY CENTER ---- Driven by Santa Ana winds gusting to 40 miles per hour, the southwestern flank of the Poomacha fire accelerated down Mount Rodriguez this morning toward the northeastern side of the Paradise Mountain neighborhood of Valley Center. But by noon, the fire had turned west and was moving swiftly through the unpopulated lowlands of the county's Hell Hole Canyon open space preserve. The fire's advance toward homes was slowed substantially by lack of fuel in areas that burned in the 2003 Paradise fire and by crews who guarded scattered homes in the Hell Creek basin. About 40 homes along Marshall Way, Ricardo Ranch Road and Carlatta Lane appeared to have escaped immediate danger as relatively low flames were having trouble getting up the hill toward the residences. Sheriffs deputies worked hard to enforce an evacuation order, climbing fences at times as they went door-to-door through Paradise Mountain, an isolated rural community of roughly 400 homes. An edge of the Witch Creek fire that was burning on Rancho Guejito remained a threat to the southeast ridgeline of the community. Homeowners who refused to leave were permitted to remain; deputies tied yellow tape to their fences to alert potential rescue workers. Officials were particularly eager to evacuate lingering residents of Skyline Ranch, a retirement community of about 200 homes that sits in the heart of the neighborhood and was the site of massive fire protection efforts during the Paradise fire. -- Dan McSwain 12:05 p.m. Wednesday

Paul Robbins Jr., a base spokesman. No fire-related injuries have been reported, Robbins said. The base also announced around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday that northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 5 were reopened to all traffic. All gates to enter and exit the base also were reopened to traffic, except for the Fallbrook gate. That gate is open to incoming traffic, but only emergency vehicles are allowed to exit through that gate. The largest fire on the base, the Horno fire, has burned 6,000 acres and is 10 percent contained. The Wilcox fire, which initially was called the Margarita fire, has burned 200 acres and is 80 percent contained. The smallest of the blazes, the Del Mar fire, burned two acres and is 100 percent contained, Robbins said.

The current plan is to re-open on Thursday, October 25. Pre-purchased tickets can be exchanged for admittance to the San Diego Zoo by visiting the Zoo’s Guest Relations window. As of 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, the Wild Animal Park has started assessment and clean up efforts from the fire and wind damage. Of the over 3,500 animals that reside at the Park, two animals (a clapper rail and a kiang) were lost due to complications from the fire. More than 600 acres surrounding the Wild Animal Park were burned. These were open buffer zone areas and not exhibit space. The California condors and other endangered bird species, as well as other mammals, have been returned to their homes while others are in the process of being moved. The rest of the animals remain safe, secure, and have weathered the firestorm well. The Wild Animal Park did lose one of the empty condor breeding facilities to the fire as well as a storage facility containing Festival of Lights event materials. Winds have damaged trees throughout the Park, but again the animals and exhibits have weathered the storm. A core group of employees is on hand to care for the wildlife. Other employees and some contractors are currently assisting with clean up and restoration efforts."

Most of the South Grade area has burned, but it is mostly brush. There is a large flareup over by the State Park and I don't know what is happening there, but I understand that the Bailey area is still OK, so far. From the Valley here, there is smoke off in the distance to the West, nowhere else, nor do I see any burned areas at all. The wind is very strong from the East (behind us), and that is probably what has saved the mountain so far. The air has been clear here since this all started. I understand that last night the fire burned up the mountainside and the wind stopped it at the road. It jumped the road in at least two places this morning, as I mentioned, and the fire crews are working on it. Several air tankers, too. I wanted to take pictures of what I saw, but there was nothing showing the fire to take. Stand by. This fire could move all around. I'll keep checking.

NCT reporter Marga Kellogg wrote on Oct 24, 2007 2:01 PM:Palomar Mountain OK in places; Valley Center still in danger The top of Palomar Mountain was not burned and the observatory, post office and other structures there remained standing Wednesday. A lot of vegetation on the bottom slope of the mountain had been burned away, and fire continued to burn on the mountain's south slope, where crews were dropping retardant. Much of the mountain is deserted, save for crews clearing the roads of debris and rock. Several homes on the La Jolla Indian Reservation appeared to be destroyed. Pauma was largely deserted, with a lot of smoke coming from the fires near Palomar and Fallbrook but no flames in Pauma Valley. On and near the Rincon Reservation, about 20 homes appeared to have been destroyed, and the catholic church there burned down yesterday. Many evacuees are taking shelter at Harrah's Casino and Resort, which is closed to the public but is open to evacuees and firefighters. The Lake Henshaw area did not appear to be burned. The area around Valley View Casino has several burned structures.

When the fires were moving through Rancho Bernardo early Monday morning, we watched TV and checked the web frequently to see if we were to evacuate. We live in the far north end of Seven Oaks - just south of Rancho Bernardo Road. We were surrounded by thick black smoke so we couldn't see where the fire might be. Both of us are in wheelchairs, so we wanted plenty of advance notice. First they evacuated "northeast RB" - the section north of Rancho Bernardo Road. Then they evacuated most of the north part of the city. The mayor announced that the area was bounded by I-5 on the west, 56 on the south and I-15 on the east. That did not include Seven Oaks. So we stayed put. Visibility got worse and worse, big ashes falling from the sky. Then police cruisers started driving up and down our street announcing that we should evacuate immediately. We did. There has never been an official announcement that our portion of RB should evacuate. As a result, there may never be an official announcement to let us return. Does anyone know what's going on?

NCT reporter Marga Kellogg wrote on Oct 24, 2007 3:25 PM:Lake Hodges fire update LAKE HODGES ---- As some residents of Del Dios and Via Loma Vista near Lake Hodges began returning to their homes Wednesday ---- or to the ash that was their homes ---- others were turned back by authorities at roadblocks manned by police and National Guard troops. The Witch Creek fire, the largest in North County, reduced to smoking ash at least 15 upscale homes in the Via Loma Vista neighborhood. Residents such as Skip and Nancy Bratten stood in front of their burned out rubble talking with neighbors or raking the ashes looking for keepsakes that may have survived. A similar scene played out to the west in the densely wooded community of Del Dios, a borough of more than 100 wooden, 1950s-era homes wedged between Lake Hodges and the Del Dios Highway west of Escondido. At least 16 homes burned to the ground there. Police allowed some residents in, while others were barred. Homeowner Greg Finley, whose house at the corner of Grape and Elm survived untouched, said he was blocked three times at different access points by police and National Guard. However, Pat Ockel was allowed to walk in from Citracado Parkway --- a distance of at least a mile --- to retrieve insulin from her house. Local resident Darrell Connelly, superintendent of the Del Dios Water District, took a break from organizing repairs to the water system. Connelly, a paraplegic, sat in his pickup truck as his son, Chris, probed the ashes with a charred length of steel looking for his father's guns. "I'm alive, my kids are alive, and I've got my dog," said Darrell Connelly, a 30-year-resident of Del Dios. "What else do you want?" -- Philip K. Ireland 3 p.m.

A map of the areas of Rancho Bernardo still closed can be found on the City’s website at www.sandiego.gov. The City will announce when those areas will be open for repopulation. For those whose homes are located in areas still closed, members of the San Diego Police Department will provide escorts to those residents who are in need of specific items such as medicines or items of personal safety. Representatives from the PD are present today and will remain present over the next couple of weeks to provide these escorts. The Local Assistance Center established by the Mayor is the place for residents to come to access a police escort to the areas that are presently closed. The City STRONGLY DISCOURAGES residents of the areas that are closed to attempt to access there homes without a police escort as these areas remain unsafe and may have fire hotspots. The vast majority of the City is now open for repopulation which is a major step forward toward allowing folks back into their homes and beginning recovery efforts. MAYOR OPENS LOCAL ASSISTANCE CENTER The Local Assistance Center opened by the Mayor will be open for business beginning at 3 pm today. The center will be open from 7 am to 8 pm Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm Saturdays and 9 am to 2 pm on Sundays. The Center is located at the Rancho Bernardo Glassman Recreation Center at 18448 West Bernardo Drive, San Diego, 92127.

My family and friends have and would not have jeopardized our safety when the marshalls came crusing by during sunbreak yesterday. When you live in such a rural area that we do with so many small streets there will always be the rebels out there that think they can withstand anything just as they rebelled during the Paradise fire. To those that ignored the evacuation, you are jeopardizing all of our fire safety as it takes away valuable resources away from fighting property damage to saving lives.

Michael wrote on Oct 24, 2007 5:20 PM:Temecula valley residents need access to San Diego TV stations. Currently there is a FCC restriction that will not allow television providers (Time-Warner, Verizon, Directv, Dish Network) to offer us San Diego local TV stations, I recommend a letter writing campaign to our Congressman, Darryl Issa and to the FCC. If we have enough complaints then maybe we can get the FCC rule changed. This is the message I sent to them via their websites. Dear Congressman Issa and the FCC - I live in Temecula (92591), Riverside County, CA. Our city borders San Diego County. Our DMA television market determines we belong to the "Los Angeles market". During the fire emergency this week we had little to no coverage about the fires in San Diego County that directly impacted us. The Los Angeles stations were simply more occupied with fires in LA, Orange and San Bernardino counties. We really needed to get coverage from San Diego, but could not get any San Diego TV stations due to this FCC law. We still have fires within a few miles from our border. We can see the fires and the smoke, but we cannot get any TV news coverage about them. Our valley is somewhat isolated and does not get "over the air" signals. The FCC does not allow us to receive San Diego broadcasts via any of our TV providers (cable or satellite). A large amount of residents in this valley commute to work into San Diego and have friends and family there. We really do not have any information about news in San Diego unless we use the internet or if we can receive a San Diego radio station signal. In this day and age of modern technology it is amazing that the Government is restricting our choice of "local market" broadcast stations to appease the broadcasters. What can be done to get this law repealed and provide citizens like us with the ability to get useful information via a local TV channels? The experience during the state of emergency this week clearly shows that changes are needed to give us access to relevant emergency information.

We've also heard that the clubhouse and office are intact. I can't confirm this information so we're hoping and praying that the NCT scout crew will get entry to the park before sundown and be able to post the space numbers on the surviving structures. We have also heard that the border patrol is not allowing entry to the park due to downed powerlines. We hope your home was spared.

Tired guy wrote on Oct 24, 2007 7:32 PM:I just got home from my third day at the Rice (Fallbrook) Fire. There have been lots of questions about different places over the last three days about houses on Gird Rd. I made it a point to drive around that area today. I did not see any burned houses on the west side of Gird Road. All houses on Old Post and that area are just fine. I saw only one burned house on the east side of Gird Rd, which is amazing, considering how close the fire got to many homes. Someone asked about homes around Frazier Elementary. All of the houses in that area are fine. No houses burned off of Riverview Drive. I heard one report of a house burned down on Macadamia, but I could not find it. As far as how long the evacuation will be in affect, it has not been determined yet, but I heard talk of letting people back into the Olive Hill area relatively soon. The biggest problem with letting everyone in right now is that there are so many emergency vehicles going all over the place that any added traffic would turn it into a nighmare. I wish I could answer everyones questions, but I hope at least some people bennifit from this posting.

In Oct 2003 when SD's Cedar fire was burning, the only coverage we could get in Temecula was of the LA and San Bernardino fires. Apparently Temecula is considered to be in the "LA market" which doesn't reflect reality. Not only are we geographically closer to SD, but most of us came from there, have family there, and work there. Sure, I'm concerned about LA/Orange County fires but am more interested in what's going on next door, especially when there's a big fire breathing down our necks. Come on, Temec/Murr is a community of nearly 200,000. The coverage is better this time in that CNN is covering SD and KCAL too. We have Time Warner Cable which at least carries KUSI (I was thrilled!) but unfortunately KUSI went off the air on Monday so back I headed to the Internet. I did find streaming video on 10News and hooked up my laptop to my big screen but that shouldn't be necessary in a community of our size. Why can't our cable/satellite companies air SD stations, especially in an emergency? I don't get it.

The first accounts I read "said CalFire insisted on having their own "fire-spotters" or they wouldn't allow the military planes to take off. Today during the press conference they talked about a "jurisdictional conflct" between CalFire and the feds and talk of negotiations" between them.Boxer danced around the issue saying she wasn't aware of any problem and would have her office look into it. We are counting on the news media to get the story and make it public. Is it true that CaFire held up firefighting efforts that could have saved homes because they wanted to be the lead dogs on the sled team? We need to know this right now without any sugar coating. If there's a good reason for requiring "fire-spotters" or duking it out over "jurisdiction" issues while wildfires are burning out of control,I'm SURE we'd all like to know what it is. Can the North County Times get the story for us?

Army Humvees are rolling down streets from Archie Moore to San Vicente, to Arena Road in the Estates, report citizens in the area now. Policemen from as far awas as Los Angeles are also on Ramona streets."

It runs between E Mission and Reche Rd. There are many ranches/groves there, including a large one that belongs to a family member. It almost seems certain that they are all lost but it would ease my mind to know one way or the other. Thanks

Bill wrote on Oct 25, 2007 12:22 AM:I saw a large convoy of military (?) travelling north on Mission, into town of Fallbrook. This is unofficial, but was told that it was National Guard arriving for support. As well, I was told that they were here to help prevent looting in the burned areas. I also heard, again unofficial, that the worst burns in Fallbrook were under control. Can anyone add substance to what I saw and was told?

Mike wrote on Oct 25, 2007 12:34 AM:I was the one that reported the looters taking all the stuff at Qualcomm. It was disgusting! Here we are worrying about families and evacuating and tons of people volunteering and this happens! There were 5 vehicles that were packed up. They were loading donations into a tent all day then moving it to the vehicles. I got police, they questioned them some. The looters then took out no more than 1/3 of the items then police LET THEM DRIVE AWAY free with all the items!!! I have pictures of it all. Very disgusting to all of us! I don't care what country or culture you come from, wrong is wrong!
Mike in San Luis Rey Heights wrote on Oct 25, 2007 12:42 AM:We live in south Fallbrook (Via Encinos / Palomar area) and have been stuck in our house for three days. When they called the evacuation it was impossible to get out so we decided to wait. I have been driving around town every few hours to check out fire danger (not so often today) and this area has never been threatened since Monday night, and there is virtually no emergency activity of any kind here. I made the mistake of driving out to I-15 on Tuesday and had to talk my way through 3 roadblocks to get back to my family. I see no reason why we should be under a continuing mandatory evacuation here, when other communities are being allowed back into areas that are still smoldering. I can't leave to go to work because I won't be able to get back home. Apparently the Sheriff's Department is calling the shots here and there must be some overzealous Captain or something dictating this. I did call the Rice Fire info line (760-728-5845) this afternoon and was connected to the Fallbrook COC. The person manning the phone was very nice and said that they might have information regarding lifting the evac Thursday morning and that I should call back at 8:00 am. Other info I've seen on this site says two more days at least. If they are opening an Assistance Center on Thursday, what good will it be if nobody can get into town? The firefighters are doing an incredible job, but whoever is coordinating the road closures and evac has their head up their @$$.

Ron wrote on Oct 25, 2007 8:12 AM:To: Darryn Bennett, NCT staff writer Thanks for your feedback on Valley Center last night. They are still not allowing enrance to Valley center this morning even though more than 70% of Valley center proper is unaffected. The people manning the check points need approval from the County Fire marshall in order to lift the blocade. Perhaps our esteemed Supervisor Bill Horn can earn his keep by waking up the fire marshall this morning as to the Valley Center situation. Of course Bill can likely get in and out to his place in valley Center so none of this affects him. Thanks again for the great blog site.
