Padres waive 2B Giles

The Padres officially ended their union with second baseman Marcus Giles on Friday when they placed him on waivers to clear room for pitcher Mauro Zarate, whom they claimed off waivers from Florida.
Giles' agent Joe Bick had already said the Padres declined to pick up Giles' $4 million option, choosing instead to buy out his contract for $500,000. The team, Bick said, also declined to attempt to bring Giles back at lower salary.
"They informed they wouldn't be interested in that," Bick said.
Earlier this month the team picked up 27-year-old second baseman Luis Rodriguez off waivers from Minnesota. General manager Kevin Towers indicated the club will give 2006 first-round pick Matt Antonelli a chance to win the starting second baseman's job when the Padres head to Peoria, Ariz. in the spring. Other options include Rodriguez, Oscar Robles and Craig Stansberry.
In other Padres news, outfielder Brian Giles was allowed to return to his home east of Del Mar earlier this week, according to Bick. Giles was forced to evacuate due to the wildfires. Manager Bud Black said there were some "dicey" moments with his Rancho Santa Fe home, while David Wells reported on the XX Sports Radio that he and Trevor Hoffman had a very close call.
Second baseman Geoff Blum also reported on ESPN radio that he allowed third baseman Morgan Ensberg and his family, who have a home in Rancho Santa Fe, to evacuate to his Orange County home.
