Chargers' Cromartie has reason to smile

By: SCOTT BAIR - Staff Writer | Monday, October 29, 2007 12:11 AM PDT

SAN DIEGO ---- Antonio Cromartie tried his best to keep a straight face.

But the horde of television cameras around his locker and the friendly ribbing from his teammates made that task rather difficult. The Chargers' second-year defensive back wanted to remain composed while holding court, but he simply couldn't help himself.

Cromartie's poker face quickly turned into a giant smile as he reflected on what was undoubtedly his finest day as a professional.

Cromartie had two interceptions, two touchdowns, and single-handedly outscored the Houston Texans in Sunday's 35-10 victory at Qualcomm Stadium.

"Antonio Cromartie, boy, he's had this one coming," defensive end Luis Castillo said. "You look at him, the way he plays, the physical man that he is. He was bound to have a huge game sooner or later."

Before Sunday's performance, Cromartie was known as a defensive back with tremendous raw athleticism, limitless potential and little experience. He played just two years at Florida State before entering the 2006 NFL draft after redshirting his junior year.

Cromartie, a first-round pick by the Chargers, had an interception in the team's last game against Oakland and now has three in his past two games. He returned Sunday's first interception 70 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and nabbed another in the next series.

The interception return for a touchdown, coupled with a first-quarter fumble recovery in the end zone, made Cromartie the first Chargers defensive player since Speedy Duncan in 1967 to score two touchdowns in a game.

It was also the first time in a long while that Cromartie scored two touchdowns in a game.

"I was in high school," Cromartie said. "And back then I was playing wide receiver, too."

Cromartie's breakneck speed and tremendous football instincts were on full display against the Texans, especially during his long interception return.

He made a leaping pick and nearly fell when he reached the ground. Cromartie somehow managed to stay up, then reversed field and sprinted past defenders all the way to the end zone.

"I think he's one of our most improved guys," Chargers head coach Norv Turner said. "That's not to say he had a long ways to go. He's just a very, very good young player who hasn't played a lot of football. Every time he gets to go practice and play at his position, he gets better."

Jenn wrote on Oct 29, 2007 9:20 AM:Jammer has got to GO!

Harley wrote on Oct 29, 2007 9:52 AM: I'm so bored with the jabs at Jammer... Is he the best corner in the League? No. Is he a legimate starter? Yes. He doesn't get called for as many Pass Interference as people seem to think... I heard during the game that he had one last year and now one this year. He's a tough, strong tackler with what I think are above average (far from great) coverage skills. The club must agree to some extent, because they extended his contract to 2012 or something. Given that vote of confidence, I don't see how anyone with a triple-digit IQ can suggest that Jammer should be moved to safety or demoted or cut.

Joe wrote on Oct 29, 2007 11:11 AM:"Toast" Jammer is usually a strong tackler but is well below average in coverage (that's why they have him playing 10+ yards off the line of scrimmage) and he has terrible ball skills which is why they have had him working on that in practice. Too bad he didn't work harder and become at least average enough to have deflected the bomb to Reche Caldwell in the Pats playoff game. He has gotten a little bit better but his "development" for a FIRST ROUND draft choice has taken 5 YEARS TOO LONG. It is obvious that opposing teams realize he is weak in coverage which is why they throw so much at him. The reason the Chargers extended him is because they like "physical corners" which he is but get BURNT LIKE TOAST WAAAAAAAAAAAY to often! Defensive backs who have average coverage skills and are physical are born to be safeties a la Rodney Harrison and John Lynch. Your corners should be your best at ball skills. Exhibit A: Cromartie is a partime playing BACKUP and has THREE INTERCEPTIONS in the last TWO games and Jammer has.........how many for the ENTIRE SEASON? ZERO, ZIP, NADA, CERO and a big fat goose egg. Case closed.

Bobby wrote on Oct 29, 2007 1:09 PM:A.J. Smith gave Jammer a contract ext after he lead the league in TD's given up by a corner in that sesason! Check the stats. One has to wonder why Smith did not go out and spend that $cash on a great FA or pro bowl corner? Denver got two in that time period. I wounder why we have NEVER had a all pro CB on this team???

ADEE wrote on Oct 29, 2007 2:01 PM: FAIR WEATHER FANS WHO DONT UNDERSTAND THE GAME, AND PROBABLY NEVER PLAYED A LICK OF FOOTBALL IN YOUR LIFE! JAMMER IS BY FAR OUR BEST CORNER! THATS WHY EVERYWEEK HE IS MATCHED UP AGAINST THE OPPOSITE TEAMS BEST RECIEVER! I AGREE HE IS NOT CHAMP BAILEY, BUT HE IS A SOLID CORNER AND A VETERAN GUY, WHO KEEPS IMPROVING YEAR BY YEAR. JUMP OFF THE BASH JAMMER WAGON, AND WATCH THE GAME DUDE!

Toast and Jammer wrote on Oct 29, 2007 2:59 PM:it was a mistake to draft TOAST N' JAMmer, and the bolts won't admit it. Three straight years - Jammer, Sammy Davis and Keil were horrible picks, and Jammer is the only one who is salvageable. Cut your losses Bolts, Toast 'n Jammer stinks.

Howie wrote on Oct 29, 2007 3:40 PM:Jammer does just fine, at least he doesn't head butt other players after we stop them on third and long and get called for personal foul, like Florence did against the Pats that kept their drive alive. Note to Bobby we have had a pro-bowl CB, Gil Byrd.

Joe wrote on Oct 29, 2007 3:58 PM:It is not my habit of calling out other posters but sometimes it is unavoidable. ADEE...I have played 9 years of competitive football including starting on the # 4 team in the state of Florida as well as starting some for the Univ. of Florida Gators not to mention 5 years of Pop Warner as a kid. We are all entitled to our opinions and if you have read the other posters' comments you will see that you are in the minority . Nobody said Jammer isn't a fairly decent corner. What we are saying is that he is better suited as a safety who hits hard and scares opposing receivers going over the middle and doesn't need the level of ball skills that a corner needs. Voicing a very educated opinion does not make anyone who disagrees with your minority opinion, which I will fight to protect your right to have it and express it, "fair weather fans". How many interceptions does Jammer have and how many were returned for TOUCHDOWNS/POINTS like Cromartie? Has Jammer EVER returened an interception for a touchdown in his numerous years in the league? Has he EVER had TWO interceptions in a game like 2nd year part-time player Cromartie? If not, how can he be better than a part time player in just his second year who has already done BOTH of those accomplishments? You who knows so much about football, it is a game of POINTS! Who, besides Cromartie, should we compare him on the Chargers? "Headbutt help LOSE PLAYOFF GAME" Florence? Jammer plays hard but simply does not have the level of ball skills and INTERCEPTION ABILITY deserving of a FIRST ROUND draft choice with 5 or 6 years starting in the league. By the way, try putting an apostophe in the word that's, a space between every and week, and apostophe in teams' so it will be easier to read your minority opinion. Go Chargers!

scottdee wrote on Oct 29, 2007 6:08 PM:Note to Bobby the AJ hater, Q-Jam is going to be around for a nice longggggg time: Deal with it! I agree he should be a safety but until that happens and Paul Oliver or somebody steps up, he is an experienced DB and is here to stay. Also, Cromartie was a risky draft pick in 2006 but guess who had the stones to make the pick anyway? AJ! Deal with that too! This team just won 3 in a row and all you want to do is critcize #23, cry about not keeping Michael Turner, call coach Turner a puppet of management, and stubbornly hate on the best proven GM this team has ever had? Did Chris Chambers just get on a bus and head for SD for the heck of it? NO! He was acquired by AJ to win the Super Bowl this year and for years to come. Thankfully the Spanoses and astute observers of this sport in general and this team in particular understand that AJ is a genius and is here for a nice longggggggggg time also...DEAL WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!

Sean C. wrote on Oct 29, 2007 10:40 PM:Bobby, Jammer did not lead the league in TDs allowed you mary you. Jammer is our 1st DB because he does his job. The D has given up a total of 16 pts in 3 games, do some research before you embarrASS yourself again!!!! The only reason Flo might get fined is because he hit schaub high in the face mask area, a little lower and it would have been a non issue. We have 9 games left to give ourselves a chance at the SB. (ON ANY SUNDAY). If the Q is as loud as the Giants game we are sure to beat the Colts. Manning sucks... Manning sucks... Manning sucks. Scream for me San Diego!

BoltDan wrote on Oct 30, 2007 8:37 AM:First off you all...if you can't see that Jammer should be moved to Safety... look up your stat's people, where do the Bolts pass D rank for the past 5 to 6 years? Is that all Jammers fault no but he had his healthy share just like the PI he had on sunday. Second I agree with the post-er's here we could have gotten at least on pro-bowl caliber corner and did we???NO Denver got them both and check their Pass D, It is just good they can't tackle LT...

SeasonTicket Holder wrote on Oct 30, 2007 12:03 PM:As a season ticket holder, I can tell you that Jammer does a heck of a job. Those calling for us to get rid of him are probably Raiders or Broncos or Chiefs fans hoping to sign him.

BoltDan wrote on Oct 30, 2007 3:58 PM:Ticket holder?? whoppee!!! Did you have tickets with me when i sat through the Leaf years??? I have as much a right as anyone to not be satisfied with a mediocre corner... if you all think he is that great PLEASE look up his stat's and quit covering for him... he is not a first round shut down corner... maybe a safety but not corner.

Joe wrote on Oct 30, 2007 9:05 PM:Attaboy BoltDan-tell it like it is! If Jammer were a good cover guy with great ball skills he would not need to play 15 yards off the receiver which guarantees short completions which moves the chains for our opponents. Put him at SAFTEY next year where he belongs already. I have a feeling after Chargers fans, AND COACHES, got a taste of the spectacular athletic skills Cromatie has that we will sooner, rather than later, be seeing more of him. How would you like to see Cromartie at 6'2" and 205 pounds with BLAZING speed and gliding gate at receiver. Mix in Gates, LT, Jackson and now Chambers and even Buster Davis and/or Nanee and spread out the defenses like the Pats did to us and we would be spectacular in the passing game. I was on Norval's case early but am proud of the way he brought the team together and got them to focus during a difficult time having to go to Arizona to practice, not knowing where they were going to play etc. I also like the way he had the sit-down meeting with LT which was a deft move and very possibly instrumental in getting us back to winning. I think he is now getting to know his personel better and, with his creative offensive mind, will be better able to design plays to confuse and exploit defenses. NO LETDONWS and Go Chargers!

scottdee wrote on Oct 31, 2007 6:53 AM:Those of you who don't know what a "fair-weather fan" or a true "AJ-hater" is (this means you too Bobby), read "Joe"'s comments above then go back to the "Schott heard round the Q" article after the KC loss and scroll down to his "insightful rant" (you can't miss it). Game, set, match, Joe! After you graduate from junior high, then come talk to us about how bad our current GM is. You must think all the players he has acquired stink. Free agents like LoNeal, Goff, Dielman, Oben, Withrow, McCree, Chambers, and draft picks like Cromartie, Weddle, McNeill, Hardwick, Merriman, etc. Is it possible the GM and the players he chose and signed through 2009 don't stink and that maybe, oh I don't know, YOU STINK (this includes you too Bobby)!? Why would you say you are a fan of a team whose management and players stink? Why don't you and Bobby become soccer fans, move to Europe, and root for their stinkin' teams! Peace out.

BoltDan wrote on Oct 31, 2007 8:23 AM:Jeezz ScottD, if you like AJ that much maybe you should get a room... AJ is a gambler, a Stock picker with OUR team, That's right it is everybody's team here in SD, not just those that like AJ. He has gambled with our team for years and if we can not second guess guys that get ridd of coaches that win then what can we do? I hope i am wrong and Norv can pull it out but even you have to admit it is a gamble.

Joe wrote on Oct 31, 2007 12:18 PM:Hey scottdee, in case you can't read, which apparently is the case, my post says that I played football for the great Univ. of Florida which comes AFTER junior high. Exactly what major University was it that you said you played football and started for? From your "game, set, match" I see you are a tennis player. Good sport but not exactly football. Go practice your ground strokes and leave the football stuff to people like Sam and BoltDan who know what they are talking about. AJ Smith has made some very good picks and a few stinkers as well such as Sammy Davis as a # 1 which was such a bust he traded him to San Francsico for one of their bust players who was promptly cut. Overall he has done a good job.

scottdee wrote on Oct 31, 2007 2:07 PM:Hey Joe, where you goin' with that badminton racquet in your hands. Yeah, we're all impressed with the fact you were the Gatorade boy for the Gators. In the last sentence of your latest rant, you said "overall he has done a good job". This comment is in stark contrast to your venomous rant after the KC loss. Oh, that's right that was 3 WINS ago. Guess you've softened your stance, chicken-little (The sky is falling...). Instead of venting like a 4 yr old and embarrassing yourself every week like BoltDan and Bobby (and Bobby's alter ego Buddy), try a little patience and let the season play itself out first. That does more to foster comraderie with your fellow fans than alienating yourself with raging rants. You might even gain back a little credibility if you take it like a man and admit you jumped the gun. Your serve...

BoltDan wrote on Oct 31, 2007 5:22 PM:I would like to jump on this rant too. Of all the people AJ has gotten rid of a few you could have built a team around... hmm. JR., Rodney, Donnie.. so before you make AJ the Swami of GM's you have to admit you were scared when we lost that game to KC?? Go ahead Scotty..admit it? Most of us in the whole SD were... that is why we chanted Marty... I still believe in Marty and now I have to live with Norv... so when and IF Norv fails however he does those things.. we will all sit back and think of good old Scotty and how he stood up for him and AJ... the gunslinger... the Gambeler. I think he stinks just for the fact that he loves Jammer... but that a whole other topic.

Joe wrote on Oct 31, 2007 10:47 PM:Scotdee..Jealousy does not serve you well. I must be in a timewarp because, according to you, I have gone from junior high school to now 4 years old. Just think, at that rate I will soon be a NEGATIVE age. When you have played football at the level I have then maybe BoltDan or some other knowledgable fan will listen to you but in the meantime we MIGHT even allow you to be our water boy and wash our dirty jocks if you're lucky. GO GATORS!

REAL CHARGER FAN WIN,LOSE,OR DRAW!LET ME GUESS JOE,HMMM...U WERE A KICKER!

Joe wrote on Nov 1, 2007 10:05 PM:I agree with you Adee that Jammer has the experience to be starting and is a much harder hitter than Cro but Cro has unique PLAYMAKING ability a la Neon Dion and I am sure his playing time will expand as he gets more experiece. He will likely take over Florence's spot next year and Paul Oliver will assume Cro's spot. Cromartie did not play much in college so he has nowhere to go but up. You are correct sir that he did drop a few possible interceptions but so have all of our other defensive backs. Sorry for the typos. I'll try to do a better job of editing. It looks like Nanee is starting to get some of Floyd's playing time. On the Chargers web site it mentioned that "there are more ways to use him" than Floyd. Gator/Charger Brandon Siler is playing very well on special teams and Osgood is spectacular. Congratulations to our punter for being the AFC special teams player of the week. Go Chargers!

Bolt Dan wrote on Nov 5, 2007 2:13 PM:All spelling asaide and take your freaking computer of CAPS... how do you guys like AJ and Norv and your beloved corners now... what an ass whooping that was... I will always be a fan but it is fair weather if you critize someone...geezzz!!! I personally don't like the way AJ is ruining this team and you lovers of AJ and Jammer and jump on this wagon anytime you like... after losing to Minny like that c'mon... Oh yeah ADEE... I have been around a long time before Bree's (who we still shouldn't of discarded) so shut it... you know nothing but mindless devotion which is good someone needs to buy up those tickets when they are 8-8...
