Pomare leads USD to exhibition victory

SAN DIEGO ---- Gyno Pomare, a former El Camino High standout, scored 16 points, Brandon Johnson added 15 and Rob Jones led a decisive second-half run to lead the University of San Diego men's basketball team to a 71-62 exhibition win over Occidental College.
Jones scored six points during a 16-5 run to start the second half and stretch San Diego's 32-28 halftime lead to 48-33 with 13:37 left. The closest Occidental got the rest of the game was on Huston Conti's 3-pointer with 35.7 seconds remaining that pulled the Tigers to within 69-62.

Figure skating
World champion Brian Joubert of France won Skate Canada, hours after U.S. ice dancer Melissa Gregory was injured in a fall at Quebec City. Kevin Van Der Perren of Belgium edged Joubert in the free skate and finished second overall, while Canadian champion Jeff Buttle was third. Gregory was responsive and alert in a hospital after a scary accident during the warmup for the free dance. A CT scan showed the head and neck areas clear, and it was expected she'd be released later Sunday.

Lillian Ellison, professional wrestling's Fabulous Moolah, died Friday. She was 84. Irish-bred mare Naissance Royale beat Black Mamba by 3 1/4 lengths in the $150,000 Las Palmas Handicap on closing day at Santa Anita. ... Sugar Shake won the $105,300 Turnback the Alarm Handicap for fillies and mares at Aqueduct. ... Sugar Swirl pulled away for a three-length victory in the $100,000 Very Subtle Stakes for fillies and mares at Churchill Downs.
Women's basketball
Diana Taurasi had 26 points and seven rebounds to lead the U.S. national team to an 83-72 victory over top-ranked Tennessee in an exhibition game at Knoxville.
