Chargers Scouting Report: Indianapolis Colts
By: JAY PARIS - Staff Writer | ∞
Kickoff: 5:15 p.m. Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium -- Series: Chargers lead 13-9. The Chargers won the last meeting, 26-17, on Dec. 18, 2005 at the RCA Dome, handing the Colts their first loss after they had started 13-0.
Player to watch: RB Joseph Addai
Chargers equipment gurus Bob Wick, Chris Smith and Kevin Duddy have worked overtime removing Adrian Peterson's cleat marks from the Chargers' uniforms. But on the heels of the worst performance against the run in franchise history, here comes the productive Addai. He will arrive Sunday with 704 yards and seven TDs in 149 carries. Only two rushers -- Peterson and Willie Parker -- have more yards. In the first half of Sunday's showdown against the Patriots, Addai had more yards than New England: 107 receiving yards and 80 on the ground. The Chargers' shaken run defense will face another huge challenge in stopping this second-year pro from LSU.
Offense
His last name draws boos in San Diego, but there's no doubting the player heading this Super Bowl champion team. All-Pro QB Peyton Manning directs the NFL's No. 3 offense, using his powerful arm and cerebral approach to frustrate countless opponents. The seven-time Pro Bowler has completed 168-of-259 passes for 2,058 yards, with 14 TDs and four INTs. ... WR Marvin Harrison, another All Pro, figures to return after sitting out Sunday with a knee injury. Harrison (20 catches, 247 yards, one TD) remains Manning's favorite target, although his numbers pale in comparison to WR Reggie Wayne (49-730-5) and TE Dallas Clark (34-403-6). ... The stout offensive line is led by two-time Pro Bowl C Jeff Saturday.
Defense
While it's the offense drawing most the headlines, the Chargers can't fall asleep competing against this defense. It is that good -- ranked No. 5 in the NFL. Both ends, Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney, will test RT Shane Olivea and LT Marcus McNeill, respectively. Mathis has a team-high four sacks and Freeney has 3 1/2. But the real leader is Pro Bowl S Bob Sanders, who supplies critical run support and has 2 1/2 sacks as well. He's among the reasons why only Tampa Bay has a better pass defense than Indianapolis. ... FS Antoine Betha has a team-high three INTs; LCB Kelvin Hayden is second among Colts with 71 tackles. MLB Gary Brackett paces the squad with 82 tackles.
Noteworthy
The Colts have the NFL's best mark since 1999 (96-40) and are the only team to earn a playoff spot in seven of the last eight years. ... Peyton Manning, Eli's older brother, is the only player to have nine 3,000-yard passing seasons to open a career.ÝPeyton Manning's streak ties him with Dan Marino for second on the all-time list; Brett Favre is first at 15 straight seasons. ... Colts president Bill Polian and Chargers GM A.J. Smith were executives for the USFL's Chicago Blitz in 1982. They later worked together with the Buffalo Bills. ... Rod Perry, the Colts' special assistant to defense, was the Chargers' secondary coach fromÝ1997-01. ... Colts OL coach Howard Mudd was on the Chargers' staff from 1974-76.

Joe wrote on Nov 6, 2007 10:42 PM:If the Chargers can play defense against the Colts exactly like the Vikes did against us then they actually have a chance of winning. Blitz but still cover and make plays in the secondary which is what the Vikes did a remarkable job of against the Chargers. On offense, pass protect, BLOCK and SUSTAIN blocks which is again exactly what the Vikes did exceptionally well against us. Norval had darn well better be more creative in his play calling or we will be doomed before the end of the 1st quarter. Have "Playmaker" Cromartie playing the entire game. In an effort to try to find a rhythm on offense how 'bout an unexpected no huddle attack. USE NAANEE!! Play Weddle more! TACKLE, TACKLE, TACKLE! Memo to Norval: Reverse, slants, shovel pass, end around, draw plays, (these are the kind of plays which slows down a defense) put LT and Michael Turner in at the same time and, above all, DO NOT RUN on 1st down with Lo Neal in all the time. The whole league, except for Norval, has figured out that is our MO. Pass on 1st down half the time or more. Put Philip in the shotgun and try a SPREAD OFFENSE and empty backfield with Chambers, Gates, LT, Naanee & Floyd or Osgood. This is an opportunity for the Chargers to make a statement to the rest of the league, and themselves, that they can actually beat a good team. We have beaten lousy teams and LOST to lousy teams but haven't beaten a good team for a while. It was nice to see Merriman stand up and say he was embarassed as he should be and so should the rest of the team as they were downright humiliated by a 2-5 team playing their THIRD string quarterback who even threw a touchdown pass over "Torched/Headbutt/Cheapshot/ Personal Fouls" Florence. It's time for the Chargers to be CONtenders instead of PREtenders. Go Chargers!
Bobby wrote on Nov 7, 2007 8:29 AM:Sorry but we do not match up well with this team. They have coaching, a QB, WR, and a RB. Thanx to Smith's off season sabbatical we just don't compete well with said players.
Ranger@New Market wrote on Nov 7, 2007 9:36 AM:It's very fustrating to watch the chargers run the same plays all the time. The other team watches film and they know the play before it happens. Like you said we can see it why can't the coaches see it. I've been a fan for many years and will continue my support but please coaches (WAKEUP)
Buddy wrote on Nov 7, 2007 9:36 AM:I rewatched the game, and I don't know why Rivers is still starting. Don't believe the hype about being the son of a coach, he was is the league three years before he got the start. I watched him try to throw the ball. There was not one good throw all game, pressure or not, I don't buy it. Good QBs find a way, the only way Rivers should go is out the door. By the way, take the pop warner coaches with you. AJ this is your ship, go with them.
JOHN wrote on Nov 7, 2007 10:03 AM:Norv's play calling has been terrible. That is why our defense is on the field too long. And our defense is not getting after the qb as much, look at our sacks vs the NY Giants. Memo to Cottrell, Forget dropping Merriman into coverage, let him rush the qb. No creativity on offense, why can't we move the pocket, why can't rivers roll out more, The only way he will get better is if he does it in practice and in the game. Way too predictable. If Lt is true to his word, and doesn't care about rushing stats, just wins and a superbowl, why not put him in space? Was there one pass to him in the flat last week? That is a very safe play, and high percentage completion. Where are the reverses this year, Say what you will about Cam, but he forgot more about play calling and selection than Norv will ever know! How many more 2nd and 10's before Norv wises up. Until Rivers can throw an accurate deep ball, this is a copycat league, and everyone will employ the same stategy, take away the short and underneath stuff. Here's an idea, 5 wide with Cromartie, Chambers, Gates, Lt and Jackson. Go no huddle, give Rivers the flexibility to have 2 plays called each and every time he lines up, and lets throw it 10 straight times, ala New England, to set up our run. Hawaii does it, pick your poison. If Aj wants to hire an offensive coordinator, I'm available. Go Bolts.
Lt ,just say no when asked to run up the middle wrote on Nov 7, 2007 10:12 AM: Hurry up offense Puts defenders on their heals so why not try it??? Is Cottrell still our D-Coordinator ??? Give Ron Rivera a shot he certainly could do a better job at containing the run and attacking the passer. We`ve really got nothing to lose by putting the ball in Cromarties hands he is the fastest & most athletic player we have. Lets try to actually win this game. For Gods sake we`re only 3.5 pt underdogs. Win this one for Marti !!!

Save me from hearing the same old tired Monday morning woulda, shoulda, coulda rhetoric after each loss...blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. We're halfway through the season and it's obvious you all are not capable of fixing the problem you have created. I'm afraid the window of opportunity that was so wide open going into this season has closed, probably for years to come. If the Chargers even make it to the post season, do you really think they'll get past the first round? To use a couple of literature based metaphors...Don't you see that the Emperor has no clothes and "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"
JR wrote on Nov 7, 2007 11:42 AM:I don't believe the coaching was all that bad. The Vikings just took advantage and exploited a weakness. We just weren't ready for Peterson's speed. Rivers passing was just way off. I saw at least 3 big passes that would have went for touchdowns. I'm going to give it some time. Rivers and Chambers will get on the same page. We are only at the half way mark and fans are whining. Making the playoffs as an underdog is not the big of a deal and will benefit the teams drive and motivation. As soon as Norv wins one playoff game everyone will be back on the bandwagon.

All charger players need to form a big circle and all say at the same time I am tired of loosing and I can't take it anymore....Hay Chargers go find your HEART......
Noodles wrote on Nov 7, 2007 11:52 AM:I disagree Joe: This game is a guaranteed loss. If the Chargers played defense to the Vikings level, they would still lose. Peyton Manning is far better than Rivers and can complete passes without a problem. Something Rivers has shown no ability to do on a consistent basis. Rivers had receivers open against the Vikings and he couldn't throw the ball worth squat. Add into the equation that Castillo is now out for several weeks and it is a guarantee that this Charger defense is going to get torched. Ironically, the only chance this team has is to play Marty ball and try to keep the Colt offense off of the field. The sad part is that the offensive line of the Chargers looked so bad against a very good Viking defense. I don't know if the Charger offensive line will be able to do any better against a Colt team that has a much improved defense. The Colts don't have to play defense as well as the Vikings, because their offense is so explosive.

I bet you don't remember that in Brees' second year as a starter Marty had to bench him in favor of Flutie...the reason they drafted Rivers is because Butler and Marty didn't think Brees was the answer!...Easy on Rivers...he's going through some growing pains...he'll get back on track. Bobby and Buddy why don't you go ahead and get a petition going to get Marty back so he can get us in the playoffs and because of his ridiculous in game decisions blow the games (See Jets and Pats)...that's right 5 years with Marty and not one playoff win!

Joe wrote on Nov 7, 2007 1:34 PM:No doubt Noodles the Colts are waaaay better than the Chargers right now and there is a reason why they won the Superbowl last year. They used to be suspect against the run as they are undersized but they make up for it with their speed. You are right sir that Casillio being injured is another problem (I hope Phillips is able to play at 100% as we NEED his speed rushing ability to compliment Merriman) not to mention the entire secondary of the Chargers is LAME against the pass, and as we were exposed last week even against the run, a master passing artist like Manning can easily light us up. My point was that if the Chargers play up to their MAXIMUM level of toughness and motivation and then they have a CHANCE to beat the Colts plus we are playing at home and have something to prove to make a statement that we are not as bad as our record plus another loss will put us that much closer to being OUT of the playoffs. The Chargers beat them last year when the Colts were undefeated (I'm sure the Colts haven't forgotten about that unfortunatley) so it is possible but not probable. If I were a betting man, which I'm not, I would bet on the Colts to cover the spread but as a Chargers fan I am hoping that Norval will WAKE UP and get creative, Cottrell will get a clue and the Chargers will develop some PRIDE in their play. Where are the photos to be looked at when the players come off the field like the Packers, Colts, Pats and other excellent teams? No more pouting and EXUSES. It is possible to pressure Manning into some mistakes. Disguise our defensive coverages and mix in a safety or corner blitz. Unleash Merriman-he sacked Manning last year. Play a DOMINANT and COMPLETE and INSPIRED game for a FULL 60 MINUTES and we have a slim chance. Hey AJ, you have to GET to the playoffs in order to WIN in the playoffs. Go Chargers!
nathan, SD Fan wrote on Nov 7, 2007 2:16 PM:I'm a huge San Diego sports fan. But, come on guys. You're going to have to wake up and face facts. The sooner you realize the following, the better off you'll all be...EXPECTING A LOSER TO WIN IS SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR NOTHING BUT FRUSTRATION. Let me explain... Norv Turner and Ted Cottrell are doing what they have always done as coaches. Norv is in his TENTH year as a head coach and his win totals for each of those years are: 3,6,9,8,6,10,7,5,4. (That's not good.) Some people (including AJ) will tell you that Norv is a good offensive coordinator. The numbers sure don’t say so. Here are the numbers on where his team’s offenses have ranked in the league over the years (total offense): 2000 – 24th 2001 – 11th 2002 – 15th 2003 – 24th 2004 – 17th 2005 – 21st 2006 – 26th This year, the Chargers' offense is ranked 21st. And Ted Cottrell...he's nearly the same story as Norv. His last 2 jobs as defensive coordinator (Jets & Vikings), his defenses have ranked 19,24,21,28,21. This year, the Chargers' defense is ranked 25th. What makes you think Norv or Ted are going to magically "figure it out" and become good coaches after all these years? EXPECTING A LOSER TO WIN IS SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR NOTHING BUT FRUSTRATION.

Roy wrote on Nov 7, 2007 5:26 PM:Nathan that post said it all. The Chargers were hyping the continuity but the reality is that we got INFERIOR coaches running the same systems. I also do not buy into the role of headcoach being offensive coordinator. One person should be focused solely on breaking down the schemes and making adjustments and planning ahead to manipulate the opposing defense to get them out of position for the big play. I think the vanilla offensive play calling thus far is indicative of Turner trying to do too much at once during a game. If the Chargers continue to regress make Rivera headcoach and hire new coordinators this next offseason. This group will take us no where. Yes Nathan you can't make winners using losers.

I gaurantee you once rivers starts hittin chambers and jackson down field, and believe me they were open, on one he hit chambers when it was 14 all for a 50 yard gain after a petterson fumble but a penalty called it back call me stupid but plays like that change a game, yalls comments are wack and yall dont know spit about football. I dont care what there record looks like as long as they get it goin strong into the playoffs is all that matters, chargers dont ever play very good when favored so i hope they go in as underdogs and shock da world baby!! go chargers!!!!!!!!!!!!
KEVIN a big chargers fan!! wrote on Nov 7, 2007 8:06 PM:hey mind if i join the conversation. this is a differnt kevin by the way. i agree w/ "marty" and "Richie." i think all the charger fans in the USA want Marty back but as "TC" said he aint comen back! norv NEEDS to stop running LT up the middle. i play FLAG football and i no that you CANT run up the middle and expect to get that mush yards. you HAVE to run up the side like a counter play. rivers can throw a bomb or 2 every game so sent gates or chambers down feild. i wouldnt throw 2 jackson cuz he aint catching that good latly. give it to turner somtimes. ive only seen him out there like once latly. the chargers HAVE to throw more on first down. they are way to predictable. put cromartie in as MUCH as posible...he is doing REALY good. STOP THE STUPID PENALTIES!!! they are killing us. done drop merrimam into coverage... he stinks at that!! make him do wut he does best... BLITZ!!! one of the reasons the chargers lost againts the vikings is because philips was not there and castillo was out ( it turns out he is out or like 6 weeks) and idk if u noteced peterson like always ran to the side were those 2 were absant. nathan is also right "EXPECTING A LOSER TO WIN IS SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR NOTHING BUT FRUSTRATION" that is true!!! nathan: those stats really tell a LOT. norv really stinks and we all no that.. cottrell really stinks and thanx to A.J. smith the chargers have turned from the best team in the NFL last year to one of the WORST teams right now!! un less the chargers really step it up they WILL looz to the colts!! oh ya put weddle in more...and cromartie!!

He is the real deal and ive been sayin this since we drafted him. He could be this years Marquis Colston(he is that good) but continues to sit the bench. Going back to pre-season he has delivered when given the chance and he is our second best receiver on the team. I love VJackson but he does not attack the ball well and thats a shame for a guy that big. Naanee has great hands, great size(6-2,226),is very smart(ex-quarterback in college) and can block well(look at the screen he caught and the block he put on kevin williams). We need to give this kid a chance or in a couple years when his rookie contract is up he will leave and will shine for another team. NOW i want address all you who are doubting Rivers and comparing him to leaf...you dont know what your talkin about. First of all, the blame goin to rivers needs to be put on our O-lineman who couldnt even block me right now. Marcus McNeil is in the middle of a sophomore slump as he has been beatin many times this year, olivia is an average tackle at best as it is, goff commits to many holding penalties, dielmans been are best lineman so ill leave him alone, and losing hardwick was huge but this unit was struggling long before he got injured. Now with that said Rivers has looked flustered in the pocket and has thrown bad throws, but those bad throws are due to him gettin rid of the ball due to pressure and you guys arent given him credit for throwin the ball away rather than takin a sack and losin yardage. Let me remind all of you he is only in his second year starting, and he is still getting better. Even Big Ben struggeled early in his second year and look were they ended up that year. Dont judge Rivers until the year is over. You can only judge a quarterback on wins and losses and Rivers is 18-6 as a starter and has led us to great comeback wins that Brees never would have won. For all of you who say we should of kept brees your all under the sun way to long cuz brees is an average quarterback at best. He buckles under pressure, fumbles the ball when sacked, cant see his lanes due to his height which causes him to anticipate alot of throws, and he doesnt have the killer instinct like Rivers. Rivers wants to kill opponents and has a warrior like mentality which brees lacks. He hates losing and yesterday you could see him getting frustrated at are o-line all game. Everybody, marty and Brees are gone...get over it!!!! This is are team so lets move forward and get ready to rock the Q sunday against Indy!!! " "

JAKE wrote on Nov 8, 2007 5:45 AM:I'm one of the biggest Bolts fan there is, even tried out as a free agent RB back in the 70's. No jokes about the age please!!!:-) But I too will agree, we are no doubt playing our worst ball. I've read several comments that hit it right on the head! We do need to stop running on first down!!! Conservative does not get it done!! And definitely is not the way when your behind. LT is still in my opinion the best back in the NFL, and will finish his career in the Hall Of Fame. But let's not end his career too early, by getting him punished like we have been. If you look at the average gain he gets from a swing pass in the flats our a scream, it tells all. The O line needs to dig down deep and hold those blocks!!! As for Rivers yes his missed some shots, no doubt. But even Brady and Manning get sack went the blocking isn't there. Put him more in the shotgun and he'll do much better. Cromartie, wow!!!! We have our own Devin Hester!!! I would have him and Sproles on the returns, and every now and then have both on offense as well. If you keep teams guessing you win more!! We have too many weapons not to be creative!!! The D has done the most of the positive work this year. But even the best get tired if on the field so much. I think that has effected the pass rush also, no doubt played a big part last year. But with guys they have, Merriman to start with, they'll bounce back.We can still get to playoffs, and I think we will. But we need to open things up as we move on. It only gets tuffer!! Norv I hope you your reading what comments are coming from fans and really taken it to heart. You know what you step into and what was being said from the start, only you can change things to a positive. I have to give Marty credit, even he change after many years of Martyball!! I will always hang in there with my guys, through good and bad times. GOOOO BOLTS!!!!
Billy wrote on Nov 8, 2007 7:53 AM:Good posts! And yes I think where's Brees, Edwards, Marty, remember Harrison? Losing Harrison has hurt the most! But this doesn't help us now. Norv's coaching staff has zero "fire in the gut." All football players have some intensity, but Marty made teams more physical and intense. Remember when we used to dread playing the Chiefs in the 90's? Norv doesn't have it. Remember watching Randy Moss with the Raiders? He looked like an averago reciever and Norv couldn't figure out what to do with him. The point is we have mostly the same team from last year with all new coaches. AJ let his ego get the best of him by firing Marty. Marty was the best thing that happened to the Chargers since Don Coryell. The play calling is so boring and stagnant. The defensive has no explosive pop. We can't even stop the run. Rebuild? Are you crazy with this team. Norv is a great guy and the players won't throw him under the bus, but like the rest of the nfl nation think the hiring of Norv was taking two steps back. I agree. Go Bolts!
Boltfanforlife wrote on Nov 8, 2007 9:09 AM:Wow, so many opinions, and so much degradation of what is on the field. I'm no coach, and neither are those writing. As a fan we all have our opinions and our frustrations. When the clock hits goose eggs, it's over, can't change the past, but can set up the future. As far as the future, let's be realistic on this when it comes to the GM. So many want to praise the job he has done as deals and draft picks. Was Merriman and Kaeding part of some master plan when the trade was made? Was Cromartie and Nanee each a master plan? Or is it that they just so happened to be available at the time and we got the luck of the draw. What did we ever get in return for Brees, Harrison, Seau, just to name a few. If this man is such a genious, then why didn't he sign these guys to trade them for picks and for key players? All of them were in demand, why not get more out of them instead of an empty locker? This will be the case with Turner as well. He will go to a team like the Packers or the Raiders, and we will have another empty locker, no draft pick and no player out of it. If anyone has paid attention, what helped last year was the D was putting the opponents QB under intense pressure, which in turn took a lot of heat off our secondary. This year the pressure seems non-existent, and our vulnerabilities in our secondary have been exposed. So if this GM is such a genious, why would he turn down a request to play for the Chargers from a guy like Lynch? Why hasn't he gone after proven veterans for the secondary when the opportunities were available? Why would he say no to at least a one year deal with a Keyshaun as a proven up the middle reciever that could give us an added threat up the middle other then Gates or Tomlinson? Why would he wait to fire Marty after all the decent available coaches were already signed with other teams? If I had my choice, Cowher would be the coach next year, but my guess is, that would be to much for the GM to give control to the coach. Bottom line in my opinion isn't the team on the field, it's the team running the team. As far as Rivers, wow, I remember when Fouts first got there, the team and the fans pretty much waived him off as a waste of time, but look who has had the last laugh in that one. Great quarterbacks don't happen over night. Remember, Montana wasn't drafted until the 7th round if I remember that correctly, and no one expected him to be anything better then a back up quarterback, took him a few years before he blossomed and became recognized as a better then average QB. Give the guy some breathing room, I'm not saying he will be the prennial pro bowl quarterback, but I'm not saying he won't either. Just like in any profession, to be the best, you have to go through the learning process, how he does after a few seasons will show if he has exploited the opportunities given to him under all those circumstances presented before him. He is young, let him prove his worth through his development on the field. How he rebounds from failure to turn into sucess will be the determining factor, and it's way to early to tell. He has to learn to be a smart quarterback, and from what he has done, he really hasn't done as bad as most are making it out to be. He could have the highest turnover ratio if he gets as blundered in the pocket as most of you make him out to be. Hostetler, sorry if I mispelled his name, he wasn't a great quarterback, but he played smart football and didn't give to many turnovers in his prime. The play calling and coaching seems to expose itself by the lack of ingenuity as well as originality. With the talent that is on the field, the options we have are a good head coaches wet dream. A bad head coach as well as bad coordinators won't know how to use that good of talent if their heads are so deep in the play book and not on what each individual player is capable of. Coach to the strength of the players, not the design of a playbook and you can re-invent the definition of a well built and coached team. You all have your opinions, I have mine, there it is for all of you to disect and mesmerize yourself with. Let the bickering begin.

Joe wrote on Nov 8, 2007 12:22 PM:Sorry Peter but Rivers CAN throw the ball. You don't go 14-2 without making the spectacular thows Pililp made last year. NO quarterback can set his feet and step up into the pocket when he is pressured as much as Philip has been this year and yes, he has missed a few throws when not pressured as did Johny Unitas, Brett Favre, John Elway, Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Dan Marino and every quarterback who ever played the game. Nobody is perfect, including a 2nd year starter with just 24 pro games under his belt; which I might add he has an excellent 18-6 record and a very respectable quarterback rating and completion percentage. Yes, I know I'm talking college here, but Philp was the MVP of ALL FIVE bowl games he played (incredible accomplishment) in and has, if I'm not mistaken, the 1st or 2nd most passing yards in the HISTORY of college football with about a 62% completion percentage which includes passes intentionally and intelligently thrown away to avoid sacks). So, to quote Norval, "obviously" Philip CAN throw the ball and extremely well at that. He just needs much better protection and receivers who can get open (the reason why Floyd doesn't play much is because he can't get open much) and make the tough catches and not get called for STUPID penalites for lining up wrong (hello small college V. Jackson) on 50 yard completions. Go Chargers!

Did Steeler fans start moaning Ohmigod, fire Cowher, Bettis is through, fire the DC? -- Pittsburgh record in 2005: 7-5 after 12 games -- easily achievable by SD this season -- 11-5 at the finish, four straight postseason and one for the thumb. -- The word is ``losing,'' not ``loosing.'' -- Brees, folks, was damaged goods -- damaged by your beloved Marty starting him in a meaningless game -- when AJ decided to go with Rivers. I love Brees, loved him when he was with the Bolts, but it had to happen. --AJ haters, how much do you hate Antonio Cromartie? Antonio Gates? Shawn Merriman? Shaun Phillips? Eric Weddle? Nick Hardwick? Marcus McNeil? Michael Turner? Nate Kaeding? Mike Scifres? Luis Castillo? -- Norv haters, where was your hate during the three-game win streak? AJ Smith (see above for cred) is keeping the faith and so should you. Indy is a great team, and it took a monumental effort from the Patriots to beat the Colts, so our chances are not good this weekend. But if you look at the last two meetings with Indy -- both in Indianapolis -- you'll see a big fat victory in 2005 and a last-minute loss in 2004 -- when the beloved Marty and Drew combined to blow their timeouts so badly the Chargers couldn't finish off a comeback. So, there IS a chance.
