North San Diego Community News Briefs: Horticultural Society to host 'Plant Nerd Night'

DEL MAR -- The San Diego Horticultural Society will hold its first "Plant Nerd Night" Nov. 12 in the Surfside Race Place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Representatives from five wholesale-only specialty plant nurseries will show and talk about their newest, exceptional and/or rare plants.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the program will begin at 6:45 p.m. An opportunity drawing of plants donated by the presenters will follow. There also will be vendors selling unusual plants and plant-related items.

Herb Society to host craft sale

CARLSBAD -- The San Diego County Herb Society will hold a holiday craft sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10 at Heritage House in Magee Park, Beech Avenue and Carlsbad Boulevard.

The event will include handcrafted items made by Herb Society members; a book sale featuring herb, gardening and cookbooks and tote bags; baked goods; a raffle; and gift-wrapping table.

Nominate fellow citizens for award

The Congressional Medal of Honor Society, comprised of living Medal of Honor recipients, is encouraging Americans to nominate fellow citizens -- friends, family members and neighbors -- for the civilian equivalent of the Medal of Honor, an award that honors ordinary Americans who have become extraordinary through their selflessness.

This national initiative, "Above and Beyond Citizen Honors," recently was announced by retired U.S. Army Gen. Colin Powell with honorary chairmen, former Presidents Bush and Clinton, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Nominations can be submitted to http://www.aboveandbeyond365.com through Dec. 16. Three Americans will be honored annually on Medal of Honor Day in a televised ceremony at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.

Democratic group to meet

ENCINITAS -- The Rancho North Coast Democratic Club will meet Nov. 13 at the Encinitas Terrace Clubhouse, 454 Requeza St. Social time will start at 6:30 p.m., with the program is set for 7 p.m. The topic of the program is "Presidential Candidate Debate -- Have You Decided?" Parliamentarian workshop offered

ESCONDIDO -- The Nu Chi Unit of California Parliamentarians offers people serving on any kind of social or business association or organization board, committee or commission, either public, private, nonprofit or for-profit associations, to attend its next educational workshop on "Better Meetings With Robert's Rules of Order" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Joslyn Senior Center, 210 Park Ave.

The workshop will cover: basic Parliamentary Law, participation in meetings; making better electronic decisions; amending by-laws, taking and writing meeting minutes; and practicing officer meeting roles, etiquette, and rules. It will be conducted by Jacqueline Marazzi of Escondido, who is the immediate past president of California State Association of Parliamentarians and is a registered parliamentarian, along with other members who have been practicing and studying Robert's Rules for years in real life.

Jewish seniors to meet

OCEANSIDE -- The North County Jewish Seniors Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Oceanside Senior Center, 455 Country Club Lane. A video on the Israeli War of Independence will be shown and refreshments will be served. Call Bobbie for information.

Race for Cure rescheduled for Dec. 2

SAN DIEGO -- Due to the wildfires in San Diego County, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure San Diego has postponed the Komen Race for the Cure 5K run/walk until Dec. 2 in Balboa Park.

The event will begin with a survivor ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The walk begins at 8 a.m., and the awards ceremony is set for 9:30 a.m. More than 15,000 participants are expected to take part. Children 12 and younger are invited to participate in "Kids for the Cure," a unique event geared toward raising breast cancer awareness among children. Local cheer squads will line the race course and cheer on race participants with the "I am the cure" rally cry, a new initiative to educate race attendees about the importance of positive breast health programs and to empower people to take charge of their own breast health.

Quilting group to meet Nov. 19

ESCONDIDO -- The North County Quilters' Association will host Joyce Becker, quilter and author of books and DVDs on landscape quilts, at its meeting at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1087 West Country Club Drive. Her program is titled "Tips, Tricks, and Techniques for Landscape Quilting." Following the program, there will be a break for refreshments; then, the guild business meeting will take place. Visitors are welcome; nonmember fee is $5.

She also will offer a workshop titled "Old World Charm" Nov. 17 at Quilters' Paradise in Escondido. This is a design-only, no-sew workshop. The workshop includes: Becker's original "cut & glue" raw-edge applique techniques using invisible thread. She also will discusse free-motion machine embroidery, quilting and border selection.

Crisis intervention training session set

ESCONDIDO -- The Center for Community Solutions is planning a 60-hour Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention training program for volunteer victim advocates and crisis counselors. This training features local experts who will provide information on a variety of topics, including: dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault, community responses to violence, resources for survivors, special populations and prevention. Jane Guskin to make three presentations

NORTH COUNTY -- Jane Guskin, co-author of "The Politics of Immigration: Questions and Answers," will make three appearances in North County. The New York City-based author's presentations follow a dialogue model that builds on the question-and-answer format of the book (116 questions and answers) by encouraging participants to air their questions and concerns about immigration, share their experiences and ideas and seek answers. together. Guskin will appear at 7 p.m. today at Cal State San Marcos, Academic Hall 102, as part of Social Justice Month, sponsored by SLL Cross Cultural Center, the National Latino Research Center and CSUSM MEChA.

    Mayflower Compact signing to be celebrated

    SAN DIEGO -- The 387th signing of the Mayflower Compact will be celebrated by The San Diego County Colony Mayflower Descendants at a luncheon meeting, 11 a.m. Nov. 17 at Marine Corps Air Station Officers Club, Building 4472, Anderson Ave., San Diego. Historians have hailed the Compact as "a great charter of freedoms, an extraordinary document."

    George Key, the great, great-grandson of Francis Scott Key, the author of the "Star Spangled Banner," guest speaker for the event, will relate interesting stories about his famous ancestor

    and show a short film.

    The fall meeting of the Mayflower Descendants always begins with a reading of the Mayflower Compact, which was signed on Nov. 10, 1620, the day before the Mayflower sailed into Cape Cod Harbor.

    Fairgrounds gathering place for breast cancer three-day participants

    DEL MAR -- The Del Mar Fairgrounds will be the gathering place for men and women participating in the San Diego Breast Cancer 3-day 60-mile walk. The opening ceremony is at 6:30 a.m. Nov. 9. Stops throughout the first day include a rest stop at Torrey Pines State Park, lunch at Kellogg Park, a pit stop at Ellen Browning Scripps Park and an overnight stop at Crown Point Shores at Mission Bay Park.

    Day two includes pit stops at Belmont Park, Bonita Cove, Sunset View Elementary School and an overnight stay at Crown Point Shores.

    The third day includes lunch at Mission Hills Park and a rest stop at the War Memorial at 3325 Zoo Place. A closing ceremony is set for 4:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at Petco Park.

    Colored pencil group plans show

    POWAY -- The San Diego County Chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of America will have a judged showing of artwork at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts at 15498 Espola Road. Titled "Celebrating the CPSA'S and San Diego DC 202 15th Anniversary Show," the event runs through Nov. 24.

    Meet the artists from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Awards will be presented at 2:30 p.m. The 15th anniversary show will be judged by Susan E. Roden, whose work is in more than 110 juried and invitational shows.

    Calligraphy group to meet

    SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Fellow Calligraphers will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 in the San Diego Education Association Conference Room, 10393 San Diego Mission Road, Suite 300. The program will be "Exotic Scripts" presented by Mark Van Stone.     Music Men Chorus to perform

    CARLSBAD -- Songs of the holiday season will rise in perfect four-part harmony when the 40 voices of The Music Men Chorus, under the direction of John Hulbert, presents its 21st annual Christmas Show. North County's premier a cappella group will perform traditional Christmas carols and popular holiday favorites Nov. 25 in Carlsbad and Dec. 16 in Escondido. Both shows begin at 2:30 p.m.

    On the Nov. program, there will be a special guest appearance by "Masterpiece," an award-winning men's quartet. Also featured in the Carlsbad show will be The Gospel Truth, a quartet which, over the past 48 years, has sung in a wide variety of venues. And, under the direction of Virginia Norte, Mission Hills High School's Show Choir will perform "Rhapsody in Red." The Nov. 25 show will be held at the Carlsbad Community Church at Jefferson and Pine Streets.

    The Music Men's Dec. 16 show in Escondido will feature a "Christmas surprise" guest chorus in addition to The Gospel Truth quartet, and will be held at Church of the Resurrection, 1445 Conway Drive.

    Women's Expo scheduled at fairgrounds

    DEL MAR -- The Head to Toe Women's Expo Holiday Show will take place Nov. 16, 17 and 18 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. It will feature more than 200 local and regional entrepreneurs and businesses, creating a village for shoppers filled with apparel, jewelry, handbags, accessories, wine, gourmet foods, home decor great for now and holiday gifts.

    New this year is the "Head to Toe Make-Over Ambush," where one lucky attendee will be chosen at random each day to receive free hair extensions, make-up and an outfit from Karen Neuburger lounge wear. To further satisfy the fashionistas, the fashion show on Saturday and Sunday will showcase apparel available at the show.

    For culinary enthusiasts, the expo will host demonstrations and samples by San Diego native chef Marcella Valladolid from Discovery Networks, Chef Orion Balliet of Azul La Jolla, Chef Steve Floyd of The Brigantine and Chef Carol Blomstrom of Lotsa Pasta. A wine, cheese and chocolate seminar and tasting will be held on Friday and Saturday afternoons, hosted by Ralphs and Little Black Dress.
