ESCONDIDO -- Police on Monday arrested a man who allegedly fled officers after he was stopped at a traffic checkpoint.

San Diego resident Christopher Medina, 21, entered the checkpoint in a new 500-series BMW and produced an identification card but no license. An officer kept the card "because he realized Medina was acting nervously," Lt. Tom Albergo said. The checkpoint was from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the area of Washington Avenue east of Citrus Avenue, he said.

Medina "pretended to park" in the secondary screening location, but sped off as officers approached, Albergo said. Officers chased Medina, who got out of the car after several blocks and ran away.

He was apprehended after a half-hour search that included a sheriff's helicopter, Albergo said. During the search, authorities found a loaded firearm, drug pipe and other contraband on the ground where Medina had jumped over a fence while fleeing, he said.

Medina was arrested and booked into the Vista jail on suspicion of evading arrest, possession of a loaded firearm, possession of methamphetamine and stealing the BMW, which had been reported stolen from the San Diego area.

During the check, 11 drivers were cited and their vehicles impounded because they did not have valid licenses. Another driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Where is the chop shop? wrote on Nov 13, 2007 8:30 PM:I've been wondering what is up with all the young punks driving thru town in expensive new vehicles. Where is the chop shop Valley Center? Track down the scum bags and lock them all up. I love EPD and Abel. Keep up the good work getting the gang punks off the street for good. Keep building Jails until they get the message to their cousins that crime is no longer a good way of life.

To Finally!!!!!!!! wrote on Nov 14, 2007 10:56 AM:Hey Einstein, nice grammer. I also love those incomplete sentences. If you think you can do better pick up an application for EPD. Go make a difference instead of talking about others inabilities to meet your standards.

Al wrote on Nov 17, 2007 8:10 AM:Great job EPD! Keep these checkpoints going, they are good for the community and San Diego in general. I favor doing these every week! It will help get the deadbeats of our roads. I also suspect the few responders who complain about these checkpoints are unlicensed ior uninsured drivers themselves so just ignore their whiny BS!
