Support party planned for Boys & Girls Club

FALLBROOK -- Due to the recent fires, the Boys & Girls Club's "Lead Off-Hitters" luncheon for the Step Up to the Plate Campaign has been canceled. An event to celebrate the conclusion of the campaign will be held in mid-January. Details will follow.

The campaign features five mock baseball teams competing against each other to see which team can raise the most money on behalf of the club. The five teams are Yankees with team owner Patrick Marelly, Padres with team owner Jack Rockwell, Angels with team owner Greg Munro, Dodgers with team owner Mark Fabela, and Mariners with team owner Doug Woods.

The Yankees have put together an event for people interested in supporting the campaign that will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 16 at the home of Patrick and Julie Marelly at 4 Golden Meadow Lane. The party will feature heavy appetizers, refreshments and an opportunity to network with community leaders.

Louise Small, commissioner for the campaign, said "Our kids need our club more than ever. Our club provides a safe place for kids to come to after school during the critical hours from 2 to 6 p.m. when kids need a safe place to go to. Over 800 kids per day participate in club programs. All donations to the campaign are tax-deductible and support the five core programs offered at the club, which include Character and Leadership Development; Education and Career Development; the Arts; Health and Life Skills; and Sports, Fitness and Recreation."

Thrift shop plans parade float

FALLBROOK -- Volunteers from St. John's Thrift Shop are working on their float for the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade taking place Dec. 1. This is a first for the thrift shop. Continuing the thrift shop's celebration of 50 years of service to the community, the parade committee chaired by Jayne Bendel, reports it has a flatbed trailer and truck provided by Bill Yankie of St. John's Anglican Church.

In addition, Ellie Medeiros from the thrift shop is coordinating the decorations. Nancy Lyle, decorations chairman from the board of directors, is contacting local agencies that have been supported by the thrift shop to ride on the float with their organization's placards. Brandon Gallery to host event

'Warm Winter Nites' event planned

FALLBROOK -- Connections Networking, a local group of business professionals known for its Hot Summer Nights series, has announced a new winter event called "Warm Winter Nites." The event will run from 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 24 and leads up to the Christmas tree lighting at 5 p.m. in the Village Square at Main and Alvarado. This year, tree ornaments have been created by local children and seniors, and all involved will get an opportunity to hang their own ornament at this event.

Santa, Mrs. Claus and elves will have gifts for the first 100 children and free warm cider, cookies and roasted nuts will be available. Entertainment will include seasonal music, Christmas carols and a performance by Miss Fallbrook Kate Derr. Following the tree lighting, the Historic Downtown Merchants will continue the festivities with horse-drawn wagon rides, caroling by the Fallbrook Chorale and late night shopping.

Kiwanis club to hold Book Fair

AARP tax aid volunteers needed

OCEANSIDE -- The AARP Tax-Aide Program offered at the senior centers in Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Carlsbad and Encinitas are seeking volunteers to assist in the preparation of federal and state tax returns for middle- and low-income taxpayers, with special attention to those 60 and older. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. The program also is seeking people with management and/or administrative experience to assist in the management and oversight of the program.

Faith Lutheran holds Holiday Bazaar

CARLSBAD -- The Museum of Making Music will host an intimate conversation with Kevin Ryan and Brian Kehew about their journey of discovery as they pieced together and authored "Recording the Beatles," a thorough and definitive guide that explores how the Beatles' albums were recorded. New Haven will celebrate 40th anniversary

    'Hard Road West' author to speak

    ESCONDIDO -- Keith Meldhahl, author of "Hard Road West: History and Geology Along the Gold Rush Train," will give a free lecture at 2 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Escondido History Center in Grape Day Park, 321 N. Broadway.

    Through diaries and letters, Meldhahl weaves together the story of the California Trail. Using photographs taken on his own extensive travels on the trail, he illustrates the formidable geology that '49ers and settlers struggled to overcome on their treks to California.

    Local man receives university award

    ESCONDIDO -- Hendrix R. Bull of Escondido has been honored as a recipient of a University of Redlands Centennial Award. This prestigious award is given to prominent alumni in recognition of their contributions to the university's first 100 years.

    Bull began his college career as a member of the University of Redlands class of 1945, but his studies were interrupted by World War II. He completed his education at UC Berkeley after the war, but nonetheless regarded the University of Redlands as an additional alma mater. He credits the university with having deeply impacted his life, and has made generous contributions that will help students for years to come.

    Bull has achieved professional success in the petroleum industry, creating a new treatment process for low-gravity oil and low-emission burners that lower the pollution created by oil processing. This technique was the first of its kind in the industry.

    Preschool offered at Palomar College

    Escondido Elks help those in need

    ESCONDIDO -- Escondido Elks Lodge 1687 recently held its annual fashion show fundraiser, hosted by Draper's & Damon's of Escondido. The Elks wish to thank Alfresco's Italian Buffet of San Marcos, singer Tony Soraci and Major Market and Trader Joe's for door prize donations.

    The Elks is a national and local charitable organization dedicated to helping those who are in need. Escondido Elks Lodge 1687 supports many local causes, including community youths, veterans services, physically-handicapped children, scholarships, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, youth sports and drug awareness programs. All of the lodge's activities are fundraisers.

    Chef Salvador Serrano prepares lunches and dinners at the lodge, with reasonable prices. The lodge has one of the largest dance floors in North County and hosts dances with live entertainment.
