Drug seizures up at border

SAN DIEGO -- Federal agents at California's ports of entry at the U.S.-Mexico line seized 228,754 pounds of illegal drugs from smugglers during fiscal year 2007, Customs and Border Protection officials reported Monday.
Over the same period, officers with the agency apprehended about 49,000 immigration violators, a 3 percent increase over fiscal year 2006, according to a statement by the agency.
The amount of narcotics confiscated at the five checkpoints represents a 7 percent increase over the previous 12-month period.
During the latest fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, Border Patrol officers seized 217,383 pounds of marijuana, an increase of 7.5 percent; 8,762 pounds of cocaine, an 8.6 percent increase; 290 pounds of heroin, a 38.7 percent increase; and 2,319 pounds of methamphetamine, a decrease of 15.1 percent.
Arrests of suspects wanted on outstanding felony warrants for various crimes, including assault, robbery and homicide, increased by about 6 percent, to 1,905, the agency reported.
