Woman dies in freeway crash

MURRIETA -- A San Marcos woman was killed early Tuesday when her Jeep overturned on the transition road from Interstate 215 to I-15, authorities said.
Crystal Rose Araujo, 20, was pronounced dead at 1:34 a.m. at the scene of the crash, which happened about 10 minutes earlier, according to the Riverside County coroner's office.
Araujo was driving a 1990 Jeep Cherokee south on I-215 and was taking the transition road to southbound I-15, said Officer Ron Thatcher, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.
The Jeep drifted onto the outside shoulder for an unknown reason and Araujo lost control of the vehicle, according to the CHP report. The Jeep spun and then overturned at least four times before landing on its top in the left lane of the two-lane road, Thatcher said.
Araujo was not wearing a seat beat and was partially ejected from the overturned Jeep, officers said.
A 19-year-old San Marcos man who was a passenger in the Jeep was wearing a seat belt and was hospitalized with minor injuries, Thatcher said.

No Brainer wrote on Nov 21, 2007 3:30 PM:Why is it that the seatbelt outreach program just isn't reaching the Mexican communities? It's unbelievable how many Mexicans that we observe, by & large who either just don't want to bother, or are completely uneducated about seatbelt use. Program sponsors need to take out massive advertisement campaigns on the Spanish-language TV stations and daytime Novelas.

Please encourage everyone to wear a seat belt. I don't start my car unless everyone is buckled in nice and tight. It only takes a second and it could save your life. I wish my son was with us this Christmas. I know he is in heaven. My prayers are with your family.

Sadly disappointed wrote on Nov 27, 2007 10:16 AM:Crystal will forever live in the thoughts and prayers of those close to her. It is a sad tragedy...hopefully a lesson to others to wear your seatbelt. Her passenger survived with minor injuries...so should have she! Let's hope others will learn from this. We obviously can't change what happened...but No Brainer does have a point. The word needs to get out to EVERYONE how dangerous it is to ride without a seatbelt.

Please, please take this as a lesson and wear a seatbelt. I know it wasn't Crystal's fault, but the seatbelt could have saved her life. May she rest in peace and her family find peace in their hearts after this tragic loss.
