VISTA ---- A 38-year-old woman was killed Tuesday night in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 78, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 9:21 p.m. in the westbound lanes near Sycamore Avenue, after a Ford van driven by the victim collided with a Hyundai, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The impact forced the van to overturn and crash into the center divide, throwing out the driver and her 6-year-old passenger. Both landed in the eastbound lanes; neither was wearing a seatbelt.

The van's driver was then hit by a eastbound Ford sedan whose driver was unable to avoid striking her as she lay in the roadway.

The 6-year-old was taken to Rady Children's Hospital for treatment of major injuries. At least two other people were also hospitalized and taken to Tri-City Medical Center for treatment.

Steve wrote on Nov 21, 2007 12:27 PM:This is the second death on 78 in two days, as well as one reported on I-15 in today's paper. All three fatality victims in the three separate crashes were not wearing seatbelts. I originally thought the recent "Click It or Ticket" campaign was a waste of police resouces, as the number of people not wearing a seat belt these days would be small. Apparently not. Although I will get rolled eyes from my kids, I will make sure they are aware of these accidents and urge them to tell their friends to buckle up as well. I'm sure the cause of all three accidents were different, but the result is that multiple families will be grieving tomorrow instead of celebrating Thanksgiving.

The other driver... wrote on Nov 21, 2007 12:42 PM:I feel for the driver who hit the woman; what a horrific thing to have happen and be forced live with. Wear your seatbelts people!! And especially make sure your children are buckled in...

No Brainer wrote on Nov 21, 2007 3:35 PM:How about more TV advertisement outreach on those Novelas and Spanish Language TV programs, emphasizing the use of seatbelts and especially informing the Spanish-speaking community (largest seatbelt offenders) about the Calif Vehicle Code that addresses this requirement?

Me wrote on Nov 21, 2007 3:43 PM:It's one thing for you(the adult) to not wear a seatbelt, but come on now do you not care about the safety of he CHILD you gave birth to...Seat belts save lifes, saved mine!!

so sad wrote on Nov 21, 2007 8:38 PM:Yet another life lost because someone doesn't know the rules of the road. Is it a cultural thing? Are seatbelt manditory in Mexico? There is a terrible pattern we see over and over again on our roads, I see it all the time, young kids bouncing up and down in a car, no car seats.

LEIDY wrote on Nov 22, 2007 11:09 AM:I WAS ACCTUALY DRIVING WHILE THIS ACCIDENT HAPPENED IT WAS HORRIBLE AND FRIGHTINIG TO SEE THIS KID RIGHT NEXT TO THE DEVIDER LINE OF THE FREEWAY LAYING MOTIONLESS AND A FEW FEET AWAY ON THE MIDDLE LANE WAS WHAT APEARED TO BE A BODY LIFELESS AND SEEMED TO HAVE BEEN RAN OVER.....IT WAS SO SAD!TOMORROW IS NEVER PROMISED!

No Brainer wrote on Nov 22, 2007 2:25 PM:To 'So Sad'...yes, it's definitely a cultural thing and seatbelt use is NOT mandatory in freak'n Mexico! When I asked a native Tijuanan about this, she told me that most Mexicans simply aren't afraid of death, and just take the good with the bad because they've always been such an economically-oppressed society. Nice....eh?

Has anyone did any research or statistics concerning all the deaths on this one highway alone. It seems awful strange, could there be something else going on here.

lance wrote on Nov 23, 2007 6:28 PM:its not the freeway, its the people driving on it who are out of control. Too bad the child has to suffer from the parent stupidity. obey the laws or pay the price, pretty simple logic......

Brian wrote on Jan 15, 2008 10:59 AM:I live across the street in the apartments overlooking the 78. I watched the scene as they picked up the pieces.

I have witnessed SEVERAL accidents in the same spots WestBound and EastBound 78.

I am convinced there is something bad there, bad energy or something, because I have continued to see car crashes in that same spot, I believe there has been at least five to my witness since 2005.

What was there before the 78? What happen there ?????
