SAN DIEGO -- A 19-year-old Palomar College student whose two passengers were seriously injured when he lost control of his Honda and crashed into a tree pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a felony street racing charge.
Daniel Shipps faces up to six years in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney David Williams. The prosecutor said Shipps drove his modified Honda Civic at speeds between 80-100 mph during a street race about 5 a.m. July 30 through a residential section of Twin Peaks Road.
He lost control of the car, which veered across two lanes, a center median and two lanes of oncoming traffic before slamming into the tree, Williams told Judge David Szumowski.
Williams said Shipps' blood-alcohol level was .04 percent when tested at the hospital, meaning he had been drinking before the crash.
Defense attorney Mayra Garcia said her client, a Palomar College student, lives with his parents and has not been driving since the accident.
