Rumor is, this site's a winner

Nothin' but Net: www.mlbtraderumors.com

It's one of the best times of the year for a baseball fan.

Forget the cliche about spring training being a time for optimism for every team. You think Royals fans were optimistic during spring training last February? How about fans of the team formerly known as the Devil Rays? The Pirates? Yeah, right.

But the next two-plus months are different. Now is the time Royals fans at least have a shot of seeing their team add free agents like Jose Guillen and Carlos Silva. Sure, it's not exactly A-Rod and Johan Santana, but at least it's a start.

By the time teams report for spring training, the roster is pretty much set. The big-name free agents -- not that there are many to choose from this year -- are signed and teams have made the major trades.

So soak up the possibilities for the next two months, especially if you're a fan of a small-market team.

And if you dig hot stove talk, then you'll definitely want to visit www.mlbtraderumors.com, a site that compiles and comments on baseball rumors from every media outlet out there.

Cool stuff

- Don't want to sift through thousands of trade rumors to read about your team? No problem. You can click on any team to go straight to every story in which that team is mentioned. I wonder if anybody ever clicks on the Rays.

- The site compiles lots of worthwhile lists, including top free agents, likely destinations for free agents and even general manager trade profiles.

Check at the door

- There's no readily available information on the site administrator. You can e-mail some guy named Tim, who presumably is running the site. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal, but since this person is giving a lot of opinion on the baseball rumors being posted, it would be nice to know his credentials. Is it some baseball-loving grandmother in Maine, or could it be Jack McKeon trying to relive his "Trader Jack" days?

- It would help if the time and date of the postings was a little more prominent.

The grade

If you like hot stove talk, you'll love this Web site. No bells and whistles, just lots of free-agent and trade rumors. Give it four out of five mouses.

Staff writer Eric Breier still can't believe the Padres traded Fred McGriff for Donnie Elliott, Vince Moore and Melvin Nieves. What, Mario Mendoza wasn't available? He can be reached at ebreier@nctimes.com.
