Motorist reports strange object in sky above I-5

OCEANSIDE -- A motorist who is a high school football coach is seeking more information about a strange object he says he saw in the skies above Camp Pendleton late Tuesday.

Heading south on Interstate 5 at about 10:45 p.m., Tony Paopao said he and his wife saw what appeared to be a large, brightly lit flying vehicle pass overhead and briefly hover in place, before heading toward the mountains of Camp Pendleton and then out of sight.

"It was about 100 yards up. It was too low to be a plane and it was too fast and too quiet to be a helicopter," Paopao said. "I'm just curious if anybody saw what I saw."

He said he slowed down to get a better look at the mysterious object and saw red brake lights all around on the freeway, indicating that others were also slowing to get a gander.

A football coach for El Camino High School in Oceanside, Paopao said the object appeared to be more than 20 feet long and very quick. He said he reported the sighting to an online UFO center.

Reached Tuesday at noon, Sgt. Paul Robbins, a communications officer with Camp Pendleton, said there is no vehicle currently operating on base that is silent and of the size and capabilities described by the football coach.

"We've got things flying all the time, but the Marine Corps doesn't have any aircraft that would stop traffic," Robbins said. "I guess it could be an unmanned aerial vehicle, but those things are tiny."

US Marine wrote on Nov 28, 2007 9:37 PM:This was probably the V-22 Osprey. They're being integrated into our inventory and are a cross between an airplane and a helicopter.

Pilot wrote on Nov 29, 2007 12:06 AM:If there is one thing that non-aviators are horrible at, it's judging altitude. I can't imagine too many places along I-5 that 100 yards of altitude wouldn't result in a spectacular fireball. Then it headed toward the mountains and out of sight? Had to be way higher than that. Probably a standard helo on it's way from Red Beach to Flight Line. Probably stopped to watch all of you drivers watching it, making sure there was no road hazards to report.

FTM wrote on Nov 29, 2007 7:24 AM:It's a drone. They are very small and they fly really low, like 100 feet up and they look like they are huge things that are 2000 feet up but really they are really low and small and because they are practically right in front of your eys when they take of in any direction they are so fast it's like they are darting away. they fly so low that they disappear over a knoll or ridge in like two seconds. the guys that fly them are really good and they get really crazy trying to hover over unsuspecting targets to see how good they are. it's good practice.

Take me to your leader wrote on Nov 29, 2007 9:58 AM:To Coach Paopao, O.K., you caught us. What you witnessed was an unauthorized view of our spaceship from the Ninth dimension. Normally, our magic Coach de-stabilizer ray removes all memory of unauthorized viewing but it did not work between 10:45 and 10:47 PM on Tuesday. Oh well, by the way you seem to have a piece of spinach on your front tooth..in case you wanted to know!

Chris wrote on Nov 29, 2007 11:31 AM:I dunno...seen something awfully similar to this near 29 Palms and it was no helo or airplane. But I guess we are all just nuts.

christine wrote on Nov 29, 2007 11:52 AM: ok, i know what everyone is thinking. but i too witnessed something strange in the sky over the 5 near camp pendleton the other night. i was exiting the 5 north with my mother (she saw it too!) at mission and to my north in the sky was a very large, bright, steady light. it was not moving at all, sat in the sane position for at least 2 minutes, there was no "helo" sound, and it was definitely strange.

Dani wrote on Nov 29, 2007 2:10 PM:On Tuesday around 7:30 or 7:45, I was driving on the 78 west near Escondido Ave., looking in the general direction of Pendelton and also saw something strange. It was a bright light with an orange hue to it and it's movement reminded me of a falling star only it moved horizontally, very quickly before either fading out, or moving behind something to where I could no longer see it. Not 30 seconds later, another one following the same path and also either faded, or disappeared. I thought it was strange but it was so far away, I figured it was some sort of test the Marine base was doing. After hearing this story, I'm not so sure. Couldn't SGT. Paul Robbins clarify if ANYTHING was being flown for sure,at the time of Tony Paopao's sighting? Instead he says "there is no vehicle currently operating on base that is silent and of the size and capabilities described by the football coach." The coach's description or height/size estimates may have been a little off. Sounds like they're trying to avoid the attention. Hopefully this coach will hear from more witnesses because, especially now, I'd like a more straight forward answer as to what it could have been and if they have no clue, or didn't have anything in the air at that time just say so!!

To Coach wrote on Nov 29, 2007 3:59 PM:I live in the back gate area of the base and I see these strange lights from time to time coming from camp pendelton. Of course they are dismissed as Jets, Helicopters, Minute man missles, The Marines doing night training or my favorite "Weather Balloons". But this one scared me. This thing moved in a way I have never seen an "aircraft or vehicle" move before. Is Camp Pendelton another "Area 51"?

Ray wrote on Nov 29, 2007 4:32 PM:Maybe it was a flare, they are very bright, silent and appear to hang motionless in the sky as they fall to earth on a parachute.

Go ahead, Laugh.... wrote on Nov 30, 2007 2:27 AM:All the sarcastic, cynical comments are just immature. There is definitely something going on in the skies and elsewhere. It's no coincidence this sighting was near a military base, either. If it's not one of "ours" (which they'd never publicly admit anyway), it's one of "theirs". As far as who, what, or why they are, I hope we'll find out soon. Too many people are seeing too many unidentifiable things in the sky to just dismiss off-hand anymore.

Spogronist wrote on Nov 30, 2007 6:23 AM:Hey 11th dimension -- get out of here -- as you are aware, we from planet Sprogo have the initial claim this planet.

FTM wrote on Nov 30, 2007 7:42 AM:Hey 64, if Coach shows up at the Rooster when I'm there I'll buy him a drink because the Coach Destabilizer does not work. Oceanside still has the winning team. Ray is correct on Dani's ornge Hue. The flares are used during war games to light up the battledrome. The heat of the flame filles the parachute and makes them 'hang'. Pappy might not think it's so silly when we get "UFO TOURIST" into town spending money to see the "spaceships". It's great profit! (Follow the Money)

FTM wrote on Nov 30, 2007 9:55 AM:I see this stuff all the time! It's not "thiers"! It's just drones and flares and tracer rounds on the base. You should see the show on the other side of Horno Ridge Road. You guys have not seen nothin yet.

MM wrote on Nov 30, 2007 12:02 PM:There is no mystery. This was a rocket from the Marine Corps new High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). These rockets are being fired as part of the train-up for this new unit. You can expect to routinely see these rockets at Camp Pendleton in the future. These rockets have also been fired at 29 Palms. Sorry, there is no Area 51 at Camp Pendleton.

Dani wrote on Nov 30, 2007 3:51 PM:I don't doubt that these are flares/rockets/drones/tracer rounds, whatever. But I still think if it was so freaking simple, then why the hell didn't Sgt. Paul Robbins just say so? People obviously saw something flying/falling/hanging in the sky, so it's no secret there was something going on. Tell us it was a flare or a rocket! How hard is that?

juice wrote on Dec 1, 2007 7:43 PM:many of you people are so uneducated and your explanations are more rediculous than the claim...

Agent wrote on Dec 2, 2007 12:52 PM:Coach, your best bet is to register the sighting with MUFON and Disclosure Project. A few other sites are available for cataloging unexplained craft. The PILOT is right about it being difficult to judge aerial distances, but even a chopper quite high makes plenty of noise. The Predator Drones are not capable of hovering, nor would they LIGHT a stealth craft like a drone used for surveillance. Also, the remote pilots are not allowed to violate flight spaces nor FAA standards for safety of the public without setting off alarms in other radar groups. And there would be a list of complaints. A chopper low enough to be well lit would definitely be audible. The craf could be as low as COAACH stated, and still race over the mountains, it simply would have raised it's altitude as it approached the foothills. There are disinformants working to hide these things. There are databases with pictures to see if this type of craft is registered in the UFO files. You cannot use official lines to request info that will be helpful, because they are not to report, nor even bother to trak, that which has not registered with the FAA. Flares would not hover, nor would they race off over the mountains. San Diego is most certainly a corridor for UFO's, the sightings are long and go way back. From Dehesa to Jamul to Spring Valley, to Crest to Alpine to Descanso. Miramar, Clairemont and Mira Mesa. And most definietly, the Oceanside/Pendelton/San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant area. See Bruce Cathie's Earth Grid for info on the reason San Diego is a 'hot spot'. Another is on the same parallel, The Bermuda Triangle. Good Luck. Moulder out.

Shocking !! wrote on Dec 31, 2007 12:21 PM:Some of the claims on here, by users naming themselves with reputable names, like "pilot/marine" are clear attempts at dis-information.

No Man on earth can confuse an Osprey craft for anything else but a military vehical.

They are huge noisy ugly hybrid machines, and slow as sin.

I'd like to know the ISP addresses for these miss information merchants, im sure they do this "mocking" in an official capacity.

We do not know everything in our Airspaces

Barbara wrote on Jan 7, 2008 12:09 AM:Well I maybe don't believe everyone who say they saw a flying saucer or (ufo) as they are called, but you can tell if they are telling the truth. Because we want people to believe what we saw but we don't go out of our way and we are not forcefull. Really sometimes more than not it's hard to talk about it to just anybody. It's hard to believe it happened to you but you know it's true. I have been asked about my experiance and why I wasn't afraid, well... you don't have time to be afraid and it also felt like a calming came over you. My experiance was in 1957 about 15 minutes after 12am . I was coming home from the movie's(drive in) in Hemet and we stopped in to a malt shop(we were told to come home and not stop anywhere after the show) to which we didn't listen, we still stopped. We realized what time it was and we jumped in the car and took off as fast as we could. The car could only do 65 miles an hour and we had it floor boarded. It all started when the radio started to get alot of static and then we heard this sound like someone twirling a rope and then in came this ufo and it hovered I say about 6 feet from the ground. It was only about 20 feet from us from what I remember. Also what is so strange my cousin still had her foot on the petal floor boarded we never slowed down. We don't remember driving home, only getting out of the car and I was saying I can't believe it and I kept repeating it over and over again and my cousin would say I don't want to talk about it and she never would until she got cancer and on her death bed she told everyone to believe what ever I told them about the ufo and what happened. But all those years she would not discuss it. Years later my other cousin (who's mom stayed in a trailor next to the house with my grandmother)where I was staying in a home with my other Aunt and Uncle and cousins.he moved in with my husband and our family and started to tell me about his mother telling him of a ufo she saw in 1957 where we all lived and that she saw it the same night we did and I quess it followed us home. Or it brought us home we don't remember driving home. She had told him she was afraid to tell anyone at the time because they might think she was crazy. I was shocked to hear this. I wish she had said something. I was alone with this happening. No one to talk to. Well anyway I still think about that night and no one can convince me that I was dreaming or anything else, I know what I saw.

Anna wrote on Jan 17, 2008 5:30 AM:I was with a friend driving in the middle of nowhere (beside some sort of corn or other crop field) and my friend and I saw a low flying object. It was pretty freaky at first glance just because I had not seen anything like it before and it was really dark. It did not make much of a sound that was audible to me and my friend was held out of the navy for loss of hearing, so it wasn't until the body lines of the aircraft were slightly visable that my friend knew what it was....the V22 Osprey. I never though alien craft of course, but I could see where individuals without explaination thinking of a craft of this type might deserve UFO status. I have no doubt that people saw something...Osprey or not, but there is almost always a logical explaination for this sort of thing. With advances in technology and a kick ass military, who knows what it was.

dkpw1, an apology wrote on Jan 23, 2008 12:07 AM:From dkpw1. An apology from my mate, s9imc, and myself, for our son buzzing the community of Stephenville, Texas in our rifcb (that you call a UFO), as reported on the NC Times web site Jan 14 and 15, 2008 and by AP, CBS, MSNBC, FOXNEWS, the Houston Chronicle, and other papers. We were VERY embarrassed. He just got his UFO flying learners permit and was not supposed to fly our UFO to Texas alone yet. We are sorry he went, but glad there were no accidents. Our sons like to show off when they start flying just like your sons when they start driving a car. He is on restriction for one month. Our daughter can now fly alone now and does fine. She mostly practices discretely over the desert in California where people are used to seeing our UFO and it does not get into the news. She is now allowed to fly to Texas occasionally, and did check out the north county area briefly in late Novermber and early December.

jac wrote on Jun 18, 2008 7:26 AM:I live in greater boston area and last evening about 11:45P.M. I happened to look skyward and noticed a star that looked liked it was fading in and out. I got my binoculars out for a closer look. The object appeared to have a blue/green aura and some red. The object stayed in the sky for approximately 1 hour and then slowly drifted away. Does have info on what this might have been?? Space station, satellite, etc...... Just curious???? The object was quite a distance away.
