Mountain lion spotted in Escondido neighborhood

By: North County Times | Thursday, November 29, 2007 12:46 AM PST

ESCONDIDO -- Residents of a southern Escondido neighborhood have reported at least four mountain lion sightings since Sunday, police said. There have been no attacks, but police are urging residents to take precautions.

The big cat has been spotted by residents of the Canyon Crest area between Canyon Road and Mary Lane from Sunday through Tuesday, police said.

Neighborhood resident Dale Markowski said it's the first mountain lion sighting in the neighborhood, although a bobcat, lynx and wild turkeys have been spotted in the recent past.

California Department of Fish and Game officials are expected to visit the area today to attempt to catch the cat and move it to its natural habitat, Markowski said.

Police are urging residents to call (760) 829-4722 or 911 to report other sightings.

Jeff wrote on Nov 28, 2007 6:58 PM:"Mountain Lion Spotted" is totally incorrect. Cheetas, jaguars, and leopards are spotted. Mountain lions are a solid yellowsih brown. Just one more example of mis-information spread by the media. I hope no one sees a mountain lion and thinks it is safe because it doesn't have spots.

The "natural habitat" wrote on Nov 28, 2007 7:33 PM:is wherever the kitty wants to play! I'll bet it outsmarts the F&G boys, while snacking on Fifi and Fluffy!

Robert wrote on Nov 28, 2007 8:05 PM:FYI.This week in Duarte, CA a mountain lion entered the back yard of a home which was next to the mountains. The mountain lion killed two german shepherds that were in the back yard. One of the dogs, which weighed almost one hundred pounds, was dragged up into the mountains where the dogs owner found it dead and partially buried.Watch your pets!...

Terri wrote on Nov 28, 2007 9:28 PM:In regards to Jeff's comments. The media is correct in their title "Mountain Lion Spotted" Spotted is another way of saying "to see or catch sight of". Look it up in your dictionary or thesaurus. Now if it said "Spotted Mountain Lion" it could be misleading but NOT the way the media worded.

Zeus wrote on Nov 28, 2007 9:47 PM:I am sure humans will kill it. You kill every other species on Earth.

Jeff wrote on Nov 28, 2007 9:58 PM:How am I supossed to know that spottend means somethimg else?

What? wrote on Nov 28, 2007 10:02 PM:LOL at Jeff. I sure hope that was brilliant humor.

DB wrote on Nov 28, 2007 11:10 PM:Brilliant, there isn't a "Lynx" this side of the Canadian border... someone needs to check facts.

San Marcos Cat wrote on Nov 29, 2007 1:31 AM:We "spotted" a mountain lion in San Marcos and enjoyed seeing him. Let him roam on whatever land is available...

Alf wrote on Nov 29, 2007 6:06 AM:The cougar, previously felis concolor and now puma concolor (aka puma, mountain lion, panther, painter, screamer and catamount) is tawny in color and the largest of the small cats. Cougars cannot roar and they have retractable claws. According to Wayne's Word (google cougar Wayne's Word), one should never hike while having chunks of raw meat attached to one's clothing. It is we who are encroaching on their turf, their hunting ground and like the truly good souls that we are, we put their meals right in our back yards with an ineffective fence between them and their food. And you wonder why they are seen in neighborhoods that abut their hunting grounds. Merry Christmas! Alf.

That wasn't a wrote on Nov 29, 2007 6:33 AM:mountain lion, that was my PUTTY KAT!

Meg in Oklahoma wrote on Nov 29, 2007 6:38 AM:You're right, DB. Someone should check their facts. The name Lynx and Bobcat are often used to describe the same animal. The government intoduced the "Lynx" into the U.S. in the 1990's and, since that time, the animals have spread across the country. No one told the cats that they were supposed to stay in Canada, anyway. They go where they can find food. We have "bobcats" in Oklahoma. And they do look an awful lot like a "lynx"!

Mr. Katz wrote on Nov 29, 2007 7:34 AM:Please trap it, don't kill it. We can use my neighbor's barking dog for bait.

Jeff wrote on Nov 29, 2007 9:29 AM:I'm glad some people saw my first for what it was. I hope you got a good laugh out of it.

Tom wrote on Nov 29, 2007 9:52 AM:Nice catch, Jeff. But it's also possible that "spotted" is being used here as a transitive verb, as in "to mark with a spot." The writer might be saying that some person or persons have painted or drawn spots on a mountain lion while it was visiting an Escondido neighborhood. That's an odd thing for someone to do, making the story all the more newsworthy.

Joe wrote on Nov 29, 2007 10:17 AM:I live in this area. I saw what I thought was a Lynx. May have been a bobcat but it was much larger than my 70lb lab...

To DB wrote on Nov 29, 2007 12:51 PM:A bobcat is actually one of the four Lynx species known to exist. It was largely in Canada until being re-introduced into the Colorado Rockies in the late 90's. Maybe it is you that needs to do your research.

esteban wrote on Nov 29, 2007 1:11 PM:Don't fret my fellow bloggers. I went up into the Esco hills today and found the cat (or a cat). Let's just say it's R.I.P. (resting in pieces). Ya'll can thank me later.

Too bad you didn't.

Meg in Oklahoma wrote on Dec 3, 2007 11:12 AM:DB: Isn't that what I said? At least, you do admit that bobcats and lynx are in the U.S. and not just North of the Canadian border.
