Wilhelm awed by production of his predecessor

SAN DIEGO -- Matt Wilhelm replaced Donnie Edwards as a starting inside linebacker in the Chargers' defense and is quietly putting up similar tackle numbers.
Wilhelm has 95 tackles despite missing the equivalent of 2 3/4 games with a calf injury. That ranks second on the team behind Stephen Cooper's 120 stops and represents an impressive number for a first-year starter.
Wilhelm and Edwards will play in the same game as opposing players for the first time on Sunday when the Chargers visit Kansas City. Wilhelm missed Edwards' homecoming game in San Diego in September because of his injury, but he occasionally speaks to Edwards.
"It is more us catching up since I hadn't seen him in a while," Wilhelm said Wednesday. "We're still on good terms. I talked to him a couple weeks ago about when we're coming in.
"He has a lot of ties to the city and this organization, so guys are going to want to see him and he'll probably come over to the hotel and hang out for a little while."
Wilhelm said he remains in awe of the tackle numbers Edwards compiled in San Diego despite criticisms about where on the field the player now referred to as "Downfield Donnie" made his stops. Edwards led the Chargers in tackles in all five seasons he was with the team, including a career-best 170 last season.
Edwards leads Kansas City in tackles with 87 and is on track to lead his team in tackles for a 10th consecutive season, a fact that impresses Wilhelm.
"I talked about it last year when I was his backup," Wilhelm said. "As much as I wanted to play and as much as I felt I deserved to start, the guy makes a lot of plays. He's around the football consistently regardless of what type of defense or what position he's playing. He's just around the ball. It's something you can't take away from him."
Remembering Taylor
Wilhelm and linebacker Shawne Merriman were among the players saddened by the shooting death of Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor at age 24.
"It's always something that's hard to deal with, even if you didn't know him as a person or a player; just the way things happened is difficult to deal with," Merriman said. "Things like this happen, and it's unfortunate to happen to anybody, especially guys like Sean T."
Merriman said Taylor had taken part in some of Merriman's charity events back in his home state of Maryland. Wilhelm was part of the Ohio State squad that beat Taylor's Miami team in the Fiesta Bowl that determined the 2002 national championship.
"It's just tough," Wilhelm said. "We're in full support of each other. On the field, obviously, you want to win. This is a small fraternity we play in as brothers, and it's tough losing one."
Old man Carney
Kansas City coach Herman Edwards heard a lot of comments from his players Monday when 43-year-old kicker John Carney worked out for the Chiefs. The team signed Carney, an Encinitas resident, the following day.
"Guys were laughing at me when we brought him in here," Edwards said during a conference call. "They said, 'Hey coach, did he play with you?' I said, 'No, I was leaving the league and he was coming in.' "
Edwards, 53, played his last NFL season in 1986. Carney's first season was 1988, and the former Charger has kicked 422 career field goals.
"I'll tell you what, it's good to have him," Edwards said. "It's good to have a solid guy."
Carney replaces Dave Rayner, who was just 15-of-22 on field goals for the Chiefs.
Et cetera
DT Jamal Williams was the only player not to practice Wednesday. The Chargers regularly rest Williams to save wear and tear on his knees. CB Steve Gregory (stinger) did practice. ... Kansas City QB Brodie Croyle (back) missed practice, and coach Herman Edwards said if Croyle doesn't practice today, the Chiefs will likely start Damon Huard, who passed for 284 yards earlier this season when Kansas City beat the Chargers in San Diego.

If he was making tackles against the better teams this year the way Mr. Wilhelm is the Chargers might have had a better chance of winning a couple more games. Instead, he is spending his time ranting at the fans because we are unhappy with the team and with the coaches. Congratulations to Wilhelm! Keep up the good work.

We can certainly use his ball skills. he is playing excellent at corner, but he is so tall and rangy he'd be an excellent centerfielder who can roam and just make plays on the ball at safety. McCree seems to have regressed this year. Florence should be on the field at CB, he is tenacious and aggressive, and plays with a lot of attitude. We need our best athletes on the field at all times.
Between the lines wrote on Nov 29, 2007 10:38 AM:If you've never read the book "How to Lie with Statistics", I suggest you check it out. Wilhelm routinely misreads and/or overruns running plays. Just watch him on replays and tell me you still think he's good. In pass defense, he stands in his zone and reacts only after the receiver catches the ball - no anticipation at all. Donnie has the best pass instincts in the league and is no doubt in the top 10 in career linebacker interceptions. Let me ask you a question. How many interceptions, forced fumbles and/or tackles behind the line do Cooper & Wilhelm have? They are the primary difference between this year's and last year' teams. Dumb A.J.!!!
FC wrote on Nov 29, 2007 11:21 AM:Nice pt Scoreboard. I wonder though, are most of Wilhelm's tackles downfield? If so, we'd better let him go. Oh that's right, it comes with the position.

matt wrote on Nov 29, 2007 3:38 PM:who calls donnie "downfield donnie?" i have never heard that and it is ridiculous. Edwards was a leader and a phenomenal, highly underrated linebaker. One of the fastest and the best cover backer in the game. This was a loss that hurts, not helps the chargers. Plus, the chargers defense is designed to funnel the ball to the middle backers

Re: Joe wrote on Nov 30, 2007 8:14 AM:Joe, Wilhelm didn't play often in the first 5 years. Compare ints in games he played in v. Edwards, but to look at the number of years he played and compare just like that is crazy. KEVIN! What are you saying? Try to make some sense learn some netiquette.
PAL52 wrote on Nov 30, 2007 2:53 PM:Darn that AJ. He went and made Donnie demand a 4-year contract at age 34 after three years of Donnie wanting a raise. So he signs a ($13M) 3-year deal with KC ($7.5M guaranteed), which was probably fairly close to what AJ offered. That's his market value. AJ pockets several million and spends some of them on Kris Dielman, signs all his draft picks without a single holdout. I like Edwards a bunch and there's a definite dropoff, but there's no free lunch in the NFL.
Eddie wrote on Nov 30, 2007 3:23 PM:what the hell was merriman wining about the fans lights out you turned off the dance so you can be a team player, ok we've been here longer than you if we are pissed cause we were so close than thats our right, step up rivers or your the next grossman. please if this was philly heads would roll....
Tom wrote on Nov 30, 2007 4:57 PM:My observations show me that Wilhelm's play has been spotty at best. I'm hoping this year of experience, mixed with the injuries that hurt him, and caused him to miss a couple of games, will result in a solid player next year. This year, he's more of a liability that help, definitely not an improvement or even parallel play to Edwards. Right now, he cannot cover on past plays. That was Edwards strength.
Keep it up Matt wrote on Nov 30, 2007 5:48 PM:Your observations ? The defense has played much better when he`s been in there than when he was injured. For goodness sake he has 95 tackles in 8 games that tells you he can play the position.
Joe wrote on Dec 1, 2007 11:07 AM:That's right RE, Welhelm couldn't even beat out an older Donnie which speaks volumes as to who the better player his. He did NOT EARN his starting position it was handed to him by AJ whose ego got in the way yet again by letting Donnie-the tackling and interception MACHINE-go. Exactly how many interceptions has Welhelm had in the games he did play in...when he wasn't injured which Donnie never was despite being undersized for a middle line backer. Welhelm is very slow and not good in coverage which is why the Chargers have been exposed as not being able to cover the seam and middle of the field which Donnie RULED with interception after interception as well as LEADING the Chargers in tackles ALL A5 YEARS he was here.
Dan The Man wrote on Dec 1, 2007 5:07 PM:I didn't think it was a good idea to get rid of Donnie after last season. To date, I believe that I am right. However, time will tell. Go Chargers!
