FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Democratic Club will hold its annual Christmas party from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 9 at 1815 S. Stage Coach Lane. Donation is $15. R.S.V.P. to Connie Freese at (760) 731-5186 by Dec. 5.

A brief meeting, at which the nominating committee will present a slate of officers for members to consider for the new year, will be followed by an afternoon of food, drink, fellowship and debate. A silent auction, featuring an original painting by nationally-known Fallbrook artist Jack Ragland, will help kick off the club's fundraising drive to open a local Democratic Party office and campaign headquarters for the 2008 election.

Opera tickets now on sale

FALLBROOK -- Tickets are now on sale for the San Diego Opera Gala performance at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 29 at the Bob Burton Performing Arts Center on the Fallbrook High School campus. Tickets are available at the CAST Box Office at 200 N. Main St., across from the Mission Theatre. The program will include members of the San Diego Opera Chorus, including Fallbrook's own Sasha La Russo.

Dress is anything from dress-casual to black-tie. Proceeds from the show will benefit fire victims from Fallbrook's Valley Oaks Mobile Home Park. Tickets cost $25. People who cannot attend may purchase tickets for fire victims to attend. Call (760) 731-2278.

Boys & Girls Club campaign has quiet kickoff

FALLBROOK -- Due to the recent fires, the Boys & Girls Club's "Lead Off-Hitters" luncheon for the Step Up to the Plate Campaign was canceled; however, the campaign was implemented with no fanfare Nov. 12.

The campaign features five mock baseball teams competing against one another to see which one can raise the most money on behalf of the club. Also, all donors from last year's campaign have been mailed letters asking them to consider renewing their support for this year's campaign. The goal is to raise $200,000. An event to celebrate the conclusion of the campaign will be held in mid-January.

The club provides a safe place for kids to come to after school during the critical hours from 2 to 6 p.m., when kids need guidance and adult supervision. More than 800 children per day participate in club activities at the club's 10 locations.

LIFE to hold Holiday Party

OCEANSIDE -- LIFE at MiraCosta, a lifelong learning group, will meet for its year-end Holiday Party at noon Dec. 7 in the Aztlan Room, Student Center, MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive. Senior center to hold annual Senior Ball

OCEANSIDE -- The Oceanside Senior Center will host the annual Senior Ball, a winter-themed dance for everyone ages 55 and older, from 7 to 10 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Oceanside Beach Recreation Center, 300 N. Senior center offers rides

CARLSBAD -- Carlsbad residents 60 and older who cannot drive and is in need of transportation for medical appointments or grocery shopping now have someone to turn to. The Carlsbad Senior Center's Transportation Program could be the solution. Transportation for medical appointments is provided Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Appointments must be made 2 p.m. and end by 4:30 p.m. Service area is limited. Wednesday afternoons are reserved for grocery shopping at Stater Bros. The first Thursday afternoon of the month, transportation is provided to go to Wal-Mart or Trader Joe's. Mondays through Fridays, seniors can enjoy lunch at the Carlsbad Senior Center. MiraCosta to help kids with Holiday Angel Project

CARDIFF -- For the 20th consecutive year, MiraCosta College students and staff as well as community members will have the opportunity to give a local needy child the gift of his or her dreams by taking an angel off the Christmas trees in the administration building, and the library and information hub at the college.s San Elijo campus, 3333 Manchester Ave. Each child's first name and wish appears on a paper angel hanging on the tree. Those who want to buy a gift for a child take an angel from the tree, "sign out" the angel with MiraCosta staff, purchase the gift, wrap it using the paper angel as a tag, and bring it to the appropriate location by Dec. 10. Names and wishes of children have been obtained from St. Leo's Head Start, Cardiff School District, Encinitas Union School District, Solana Beach School District and needy MiraCosta student-parents in the college's EOPS program. Garden of Lights ready to shine

ENCINITAS -- The Garden of Lights at Quail Botanical Gardens will brighten the night with its display of holiday lighting from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 7 through 9, Dec. 13 through 23 and Dec. 26 through 30 at the gardens, 230 Quail Gardens Drive. The annual event features displays of more than 100,000 sparkling lights and festivities including family-friendly activities, horse-drawn-wagon rides, crafts for children, marshmallow roasting, visits with Santa, live music, hot mulled wine and refreshments. The garden will also showcase the "Holiday Lighting Exchange Event" hosted by San Diego Gas & Electric Co. from 5 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 14. Guests are encouraged to exchange up to three incandescent holiday light strands for energy-efficient, multicolored holiday lights while supplies last. LED holiday lights are cool to the touch, offering a reduced fire hazard and are also brighter, lasting up to 100 times longer than incandescent lights, and provide up to 90 percent in energy savings.     SAN DIEGO -- Jewish BigPals, a program of Jewish Family Service of San Diego, is in need of volunteers.

    The program matches Jewish adults ages 19 and older with Jewish children ages 6 to 16 from single-parent families. A BigPal is a mentor and a confidant who helps a child by forming a lasting, supportive relationship on the journey to adulthood. Male volunteers especially are needed.
