Rivers, L.T. feuding? Get out
By: LOREN NELSON - North County Times | ∞
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Contradicting TV footage that captured what appeared to be evidence of an icy relationship, running back LaDainian Tomlinson and quarterback Philip Rivers were acting like the best of chums after the Chargers' improbable 23-17 overtime win Sunday over the Tennessee Titans.
Dressing side-by-side after the game at LP Field, the duo exchanged smiles and small talk as Rivers tugged on his boots and jeans and Tomlinson slid into one of his trademark suits.
"I love you, man," Tomlinson said with a grin as he departed a media conference room.
"I love you, too," Rivers answered as he took his turn at the podium.
Sweet as that exchange was, CBS cameras showed an altogether different picture near the end of the third quarter. The Chargers were trailing 10-3 when replays showed Rivers plopping down on a bench next to Tomlinson, who immediately got up and walked away.
When asked about the sideline incident, Tomlinson said he had no problems with Rivers and suggested the replays might have been showing something altogether different.
"I don't even know that that happened, as far as Philip coming down and me getting up," Tomlinson said. "I think the one thing that you may be talking about is I was actually talking to (fullback Lorenzo Neal), and we were talking about a play where I thought we could've got more yards if Lorenzo would've tried to block the linebacker.
"I just got up to go say something to the linemen, just to tell them 'Guys, listen, we're about to break some. Keep it going.'
"I don't know how (the television broadcast) made it seem."
Rivers and Tomlinson have a history of what they have described as "competitive desire exchanges" or "competitive talk," depending on which one you ask.
In an early-season loss in Green Bay that dropped the Chargers to 1-2, TV cameras caught Tomlinson and Rivers exchanging heated words.
They have had animated exchanges in other games this season, usually after a pass play intended for Tomlinson goes awry.
Despite poor play by the offense through three-plus quarters on Sunday, Tomlinson insists there was no lost love on the sideline or in the huddle.
"No. I thought we were doing OK as far as trying to get things together," he said. "I mean, Philip, it was tough throwing the ball today. Them guys were hitting him every time he threw the ball. I can see that."

Steven wrote on Dec 10, 2007 8:03 AM:I thought it was interesting how Tiki Barber of Football Night in America, whom recently played with San Diego "darling" Eli Manning of the Giants, said that you just "cannot do that." That is, you cannot get up as LT did and send a message that you were disgusted with the QB. Is it true that LT was only talking to the line. Who knows?
Bobby wrote on Dec 10, 2007 8:53 AM:Great game. Sad the players have to go to this extreme for a little emotion. It worked, LT looked like a man on a mission in the fourth qt. Shows the difference in a great emotional coach like Marty and a stick in the mud, Norv,,, Smiths kind of coach. Buy your playoff tickets, we need only to get past Denver to "back into the playoffs"
Joe wrote on Dec 10, 2007 9:17 AM:Sorry LT. I don't buy your politically correct spin. A picture tells a thousand words and your expression + demeanor = pouting. Please abandon that behavior and keep a positive emotional expression on the side lines as Rivers and the Chargers need for you to stay positive 100% of the time.
James wrote on Dec 10, 2007 10:30 AM:Don't ever mention Tiki again... ... . He bags on Eli after the fact. He bags on Coughlin, the guy who saved his career. Before Coughlin Tiki was an average back who had maybe the worst fumblitis in he league. Coughlin was the one who changed the way he held the ball and solved his problem...TIKI'S A JOKE, an even bigger joke is him covering inane stories on the TODAY SHOW... ...!
chuck wrote on Dec 10, 2007 10:55 AM:leave it alone. emotions run high these two are very competive thank god. don't read into something that is not there. leave that up to the stuped reporters, ala kobe ad the Lakers. the reporters love to stir stuff up. they are scum and more than likely never played any sports. if L.T. and Rivers have issues let them work it out.
Kelly wrote on Dec 10, 2007 10:59 AM:Are you people kidding? Even IF LT was mad at Rivers, which I wouldn't blame him the way he was playing, how did Rivers respond after that? Oh, you must have forgotten, he suddenly played superbly and won the game. Quit making a mountain out of a molehill. If any of you out there get along with your co-workers all the time you are in a unique situation to say the least. And Bobby, what a ridiculous grasp at straws trying to somehow place blame on Norv after a great win on the road. I don't think you will ever be hearing chants of "Marty" at Qualcomm again.
Bleu wrote on Dec 10, 2007 12:06 PM:Come On...this was just a moment between two competetive guys. It's obvious from the camera, Lt was pissed at Rivers and was giving him a "get your sh*t together look". Philip was getting crushed by the D of Tennessee but was also making some poor choices with the ball. They both want to win, unfortunately Rivers rarely throws a deep ball down the field to keep the defense honest and so the D cheats towards the line of scrimage. That makes his throws underneath coverage that much harder to complete. Norv needs to let him throw down the field more to loosen things up. The chargers passing attack is way too predictable and that is a big reason why they have to work so hard for everything.
Steve wrote on Dec 10, 2007 1:25 PM:When a quarterback is not playing well is when he needs the SUPPORT of ALL of his team mates the MOST! The quarterback, by definition, is the leader of the offense. Not the running back, not the center, nobody else. When I played offense in college if anybody except the quarterback said one word while in the huddle, even in practice, they would be running wind sprints/gassers until they dropped. Rivers and LT should sit next to each other on the bench and be discussing stategy and the next offensive series and how best to HELP each other and their team and the franchise. Rivers proved to have "true grit" and should have earned the respect of all Chargers and Chargers fans. This is the 1st time in Chargers HISTORY that they have come back and won a game on the road down by 14 points in the 4th quarter against a team with a winning record. Spectacular punt by Sifres and special teams play by Osgood and Cromartie to down the ball at the 2 which provided the great field position to help win the game. "Just get in the tournament" and "make some noise".
Ryan wrote on Dec 10, 2007 2:55 PM:... . [LT]... is full of it saying he was going to talk to his o-line. The city of San Diego is the biggest city in the United States to never win a world championship in pro sports and they never will. I feel sorry for everyone out in San Diego because they will never win a SuperBowl. Lt just cries all the time. He cried at the begining of this year when they weren't winning and he cried when the better team (NE) came in there and beat them last year. Ah it feels great to say im a Dallas Cowboy fan and he nor the chargers will ever win 5 superbowls. Chargers sux
RandyR wrote on Dec 10, 2007 4:21 PM:It's funny that all these people talk about the supposed feud between PR and LT. The media is trying to find something to make a story. The bloggers probably have not even played any competitive team sports. This goes on from peewee league to the pros. I would rather see emotion than our team leaders just sit there and not care about leading their team. At the end of the day they are probably talking about what to do to correct the issues.
Jonathan wrote on Dec 10, 2007 4:26 PM:Wow Ryan....might want to save that kinda junk for a Cowboys message board, ya? LT is a professional, much more professional than the vast majority of athletes out there. I've interviewed him a couple of times for a different publication, and he was the nicest of guys, even after some truly horrendous losses. Ryan, try getting YOUR act together ("Chargers sux, Lt just cries all the time") before you point fingers at others

Shay wrote on Dec 10, 2007 8:04 PM:Ya know, all this is a bunch of crock. As mentioned, the media is always trying to start trouble when trouble isn't even there. honestly wrote on Dec 10, 2007 10:58 PM:It's all about who the Chargers lose to in the first round. Rivers does not show the skills consistently, but most of all he is not a leader. He trashes around, he yells at officials, he stomps. He needs to grow up -- I miss Drew Brees.

Ryan Sux wrote on Dec 11, 2007 5:57 AM:Hey Ryan, just curious, why would you be commenting on a Chargers article. Let me guess, you were a Bandwagon Charger fan last year when everything was perfect, and this year, hey you found a new team having an awesome regular season to hop on the bandwagon again, that would be my only explanation why you are on a Chargers message board, declaring your love for the Cowboys, who last time I checked have won as many Super Bowls as the Chargers in the past 10 yrs, which would be 0. Who is that wide reciever on "your team", he wears the number 81 i think?? oh wait T.O. the biggest cry baby in the history on the NFL. Dont bring that garbage to this message board, real, die-hard Charger fans!
BoltDan wrote on Dec 11, 2007 8:24 AM:I have to agree with most of you in here... typical Dallas, Patsies, Giant fans always sticking their noses in somewhere... makes me wonder what those cities school systems are like that everybody is so stuck on themselves... AND KELLY: you will here chants of Marty again (MY BET) in our stadium...because Norv does the same thing over and over... ruins great teams and makes them vanilla... WE snuck that win out at Tenn... The pass to Chambers looked to hit the ground... one batter camera angle and we were done... is that what it comes down to??? Norv will never come out and pass in the begining of the game on first down... he will continue to run when they know we will run and then throw in bad situations.. Wonder why Rivers is having a hard time? Norv is putting him in those situations. Period. One good thing has happened.. CRO is getting his shot and Florence is sitting... Now if Jammer would just live up to his draft choice.
Ryan Still Sux wrote on Dec 11, 2007 8:24 AM:...real die-hard Charger fans only on this site please! i accidentally hit the post comment before i finished my last post...but dont think i am done with you yet Ryan...i bet its real easy to cheer for a team doing well, but the real question to ask you is, were you parading around telling everybody how proud you were to be a Cowboy fan the past few years when they have been terrible? when was the last time the Cowboys won a playoff game, not in this decade????? sure you can hold on to the past when the Cowboys were amazing..there is nothing i hate worse then a Bandwagon fan....i have been a die-hard Bolt fan my entire life, even when they went 1-15, or 3-13 every year for what seemed like an eternity, with the whole Ryan Leaf, and Craig Whelihan phases and everything else. You are a punk Ryan!

Brad wrote on Dec 11, 2007 10:50 AM:LOL...Tomlinson please don't ruin your good name by spinning a bad tale. You were pissed. As well you should be. Rivers played like crap for 3 and 1/2 quarters and should be told....look man your playing like crap get it to gether. you can support your teammates but the worst thing you can do as a leader is let lousey performance go unchecked. Tomlinson was acting like the leader he is.... There is not a feud in San Deigo, its just High exptations followed by mediocore performances by some. O-Line get it together the road only gets tougher as teams that need to win to get into the playoffs are going to be playing with a lot of emotion.... Go Bolts.
PLEASE STOP IT wrote on Dec 11, 2007 11:11 AM:I don't understand you people that say LT is pouting. The guy is clearly upset and needs to express that. Stay positive about that. Up until that point the team looked like a joke. The man wants to win and he clearly shows it. He is not saying "...give me the d@mn ball!" He is saying ...come on let's stop screwing around and play football. You critics are probably the type of people who doing something is not about trying to do it your best but, to just do it to say you tried. That's why he makes millions and you don't. That's why he is an MVP and Leaf isn't. Too many excellent athletes out there that don't know how to compete. He does and he shows it.
Jon wrote on Dec 11, 2007 1:16 PM:I'll believe that underneath it all LT is a good guy, but his "pouty" attitude has been obvious this year. He's acting very different, getting angry quickly and showing extreme frustration when something goes wrong. Definitely chippier this year. Don't know what it is. But it makes him look bad, like a whiner when things aren't going right. A leader has got to get people to step up without pointing fingers at them. No one likes to have the finger pointed at them even if they did make a mistake. Tomlinson's got to keep his composure and work through it.
BoltDan wrote on Dec 11, 2007 1:38 PM:Of course LT is upset.. First they fire his coach.. then they hire the tool that goes by Norv... then they don't find any extra help in the off-season for offense... what does he have to be mad at??? Norv and AJ have ruined his shot at a ring when we were going the right direction... Of course he is mad... at everything not just Rivers.

We will see Jacksonville in SD as our first game, that is do able if our boys can get it together in spite of norm and is emotionless vanilla style play. I have to like him cause he is OUR coach.
