Bad ideas come in threes

Our view: Ordinance to ban day laborers is another ruse in local immigration wars
You've got to hand it to some members of the Escondido City Council. When it comes to illegal immigration, they just don't give up.
First it was a rental ban; then it was a parking ban; now, if Councilman Ed Gallo has his way, people in Escondido ---- at least some of them ---- will be banned from standing.
Gallo has proposed a city ordinance that would prohibit day laborers (i.e., illegal immigrants) from entering roadways to solicit work. Council members Sam Abed, Marie Waldron and Dick Daniels think the idea makes sense. Once again, Mayor Lori Pfeiler has her doubts.
As with previous proposals of this nature, the supporters of this effort will no doubt deny that it has anything to do with illegal immigration. The rental ban and the parking ban were about overcrowding. The driver's license checkpoints are sold as a way to prevent hit-and-runs. Restrictions on day laborers are being touted as a way to improve public safety and curb public nuisance.
Illegal immigration is a problem best left to the federal government to resolve. Before the council takes on yet another immigration battle, and creates yet more city codes, perhaps Escondido should first try to enforce the plethora of state and local laws that already address public nuisance and safety.

AMEN!!!!!! wrote on Dec 13, 2007 9:26 PM:Thank you NCT for your stand!!!! I think Gallo and his gang are nothing but grandstanding and political positioning how sad that people are being used as pawns in their re-election campaign. Escondido is quite a city isn't it?
anotherview wrote on Dec 13, 2007 10:10 PM:If City of Escondido officials truly wished to reduce the illegal alien population within city boundaries, then these officials would mandate city law enforcement to cooperate with federal authorities to identify and detain illegal aliens for their due deportation. Nipping at this social problem will only induce the bully ACLU and various sob-sisters to block the proposed superficial remedies. Removal of the illegal aliens by lawful means represents the best answer for this problem.
Check out San Marcos wrote on Dec 13, 2007 10:32 PM:Check out San Marcos. They are just as stupid with their ordinance against college students living in houses. This wanna be college community is filled with bad ideas, led by Desmond bad idea for a Mayor!
Can't believe you said that wrote on Dec 14, 2007 4:18 AM:"Ilegal immigration is an problem best left to the federal government to resolve." WHEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes we have loitering laws, etc. but sanctuary cities do not address them if illegals are involved. Don't hate us; we're just attempting to do the job that some Americans won't! P.S. The mayor is always doubtful. That is one of our biggest problems.
Dave wrote on Dec 14, 2007 6:09 AM:Hats' off to Ed Gallo for taking a stand on an issue that needs all of our support-I for one am sick and tired of the taking of jobs (talk to some of the unemployed construction workers), along with the bankrupting of our Hospitals! Not to mention our Welfare system. Enough is enough!!
politico2 wrote on Dec 14, 2007 6:36 AM:Illegal immigration effects us all. City laws are passed to protect the residents of a city. The Escondido City Council is trying to do just that. They are to be lauded for their clear-thinking and direct approach to solving the problelms of over-crowding and hit and run driving, etc. You Go Escondido City Council!
To I can't believe you wrote on Dec 14, 2007 7:30 AM:Since when do we get to choose the federal government will or will not do what we want them to do. I can't believe that you don't get it yet, they won't do anything because they know that immigrants legal or illegal sustain our economy. If the illegals were really hurting the U.S. as you say they are than believe they would do something real quick, but the illegals are here doing the jobs as you said "some Americans won't". They pay taxes, they pay into social security something that not even our Legislators do! The pay sales tax....etc. Just because you don't like the look of them. Just because you don't like them because they are too brown that sounds like a personal problem. I would rather see a whole bunch of guys looking work rather than pan handling for hand out at the freeway exits and other locations. I am glad we have a Mayor that isn't just a follower and always stands up for what is best for our city. I am glad that our Mayor alway challenges the three stooges. You are right this a problem, but the biggest problem. We have our young men and women fighting a futile war attempting to establish democracy in a place where they don't want it an right here in our beautiful U.S. democracy, and our U.S. Constitution is being lost. No, our biggest problem are the Americans who use bigotry and racism as a platform to destroy the reputation of America.
So What? wrote on Dec 14, 2007 8:19 AM:So what if this new ordinance is a disguise to fight ILLEGAL immigrants from running into the streets, risking the lives of other drivers or pedestrians to seek work ILLEGALLY! Call it whatever you want, so long as it accomplishes the goal of making it harder for illegals to work here and employers to hire them. I'll vote for the ordinance if given a chance.
Pablo wrote on Dec 14, 2007 9:05 AM:Instead of criticizing new ideas perhaps the North county Times could list “the plethora of state and local laws that already address public nuisance and safety.” The ones that they imply would end overcrowded housing in Escondido if on-street parking regulations similar to those working for decades in Menlo Park and Pasadena are not the answer. Perhaps they could use their bully pulpit to convince residents that traffic checkpoints, where police regularly arrest drunk drivers and get unregistered or uninsured vehicles operated by unlicensed drivers into impound yards, are not in legitimate resident's best interests. Possibly there is already a better solution on the books they can cite? Maybe they could recommend the city council insist that city police officers get cross-trained with ICE under the existing 287 (g) program? Conceivably the North County Times could tell the council members that they have researched Escondido’s Circulation Plan and would recommend, wherever possible, banning parking and stopping on all Prime Arterial, Major Roads and Collector streets in order to improve public safety and at the same time curb the public nuisance of day laborers soliciting on busy streets? Get on it North County Times, lead the way.
Darrell wrote on Dec 14, 2007 9:15 AM:When I drive through Escondido, which I avoid at all costs, I see the mass of illegals standing along the streets and wonder where the fight is. A reduction in distractions for drivers has to be a good thing. Also I have never heard a more idiotic statement then, "best left to the federal government to solve". NCT Staff get a clue, THEY DON'T CARE!!!!!!!!!

RG wrote on Dec 14, 2007 1:03 PM:This editorial says "Illegal immigration is a problem best left for the federal government to resolve". Whenever I read this statement, it is clear to me that those who state it know very well the feds are essentially doing nothing and that's the way they want it to continue. "Mayor Lori Pheiler has her doubts" Again, the same old delay. She would rather study the problem for the next 20 years and let it become worse and worse. Gallo, Abed, Waldron and Daniels have it right for the good of the city. Drivers license checkpoints, parking bans and rental bans are all designed to make Escondido a better place. If illegals get caught up in it, too bad.
juancarlos wrote on Dec 14, 2007 6:12 PM:"Illegal immigration is a problem best left to the federal government to resolve." Are you kidding? When will that happen? The first of never? Cities are only trying to do the job that the feds have failed miserably to do.

Meanwhile California has the largest population of Illegal Immigrants in the nation.

You have written a plethora of ridiculous opinions, but this one might be your worst.
