Two married couples killed in crash on 76
By: North County Times | ∞
PALA ---- Four North County residents ---- a pair of married couples ---- were killed in a fiery crash on Highway 76 late Friday when the compact car they were in collided head on with a sport utility vehicle just before midnight, and the two-lane road was closed for seven hours, authorities said.
The driver of the larger vehicle was expected to be charged with manslaughter, the California Highway Patrol said.
The San Diego County medical examiner's office identified the victims as Jesus Desantiago, 45, and Lina Desantiago, 46, of Escondido, and Luis Baez, 51, and Rubi Baez, 46, of Vista. Investigator James Buckley said the couples were riding in the same car, a 2005 Toyota Camry, which was being driven by Jesus Desantiago.
The accident occurred at 11:51 p.m. while the Camry was heading west on Highway 76 in the North County backcountry, about two miles east of Pala Mission Road. The Camry collided with an eastbound 2005 GMC Yukon being driven by Anthony J. Boles, 24, of Palm Springs, the California Highway Patrol reported.
"For an unknown reason, Boles allowed the Yukon to drift onto the right shoulder of State Route 76 eastbound, colliding with the metal guardrail that borders the north road edge," the Highway Patrol stated in a news release. "Boles lost control of the Yukon as it crossed over the double yellow lines into the westbound lane."
The force of the collision knocked both vehicles onto their roofs, blocking the highway's westbound lane, the patrol said.
The Camry's right-front passenger, 51-year-old Luis Baez, was flown by a Mercy Air helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, authorities said. The other three victims died at the scene, Buckley said.
Boles and a passenger, 23-year-old Deanna Fridley, also of Palm Springs, were rescued from the upside-down Yukon by passersby who stopped to help, the Highway Patrol said. Boles and Fridley were taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido for treatment of serious injuries, authorities said.
"Boles will be charged with manslaughter and felony DUI (driving under the influence) when he is released from the hospital," the Highway Patrol said.
According to a California Highway Patrol dispatcher, the accident and the investigation triggered the closure of the section of the highway between Agua Tibia Avenue and Magee Road until 7 a.m. Saturday.

Under the influence, tired, and angry. Thanks Arnold.

I don't really care what some people think about drinking and driving. It's not right in anyway, no matter if you had one drink, or part of a drink. You never know what will happen. And 99.9% of the time, it's the person that was drinking and driving that lives, or gets injured less than the innocent people. I completely agree that this accident could have been avoided. Instead people think they're fine, when they're really not, to go out and get in a vehicle and drive off. Who cares what you think, think of the others... the people that you are risking their life, just so you can drive when you are under the influence. That's very selfish. Four innocent people dying, because one person thinks they're fine. That's insane really. I hope the person that was driving the SUV that night gets hit with the worst sentence they can get. There's nothing in the world that can bring these people back. No amount of apologies is going to undo what happened. People need to think and be more responsible for their actions. It would prevent a lot of things like this from happening.

YOU have a lot of nerve accusing him of something he may not have done just because he has a prior criminal record. What if the female was driving and she was the one drunk? What if she was the sober designated driver? YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT ALL OF THE POSSIBILITIES BEFORE YOU LASH OUT AT SOMEONE.How do you even know his parents are alive? There you go assuming again."we dont and never will again" Although it is tragic that these couples died the way they did.Reality check people we are all gonna die and not everybody is gonna go peacefuly in their sleep at the age of 102. By the way why nct do you allow this person to use offensive language Im refering to "FTP".
To Marge wrote on Jan 12, 2008 7:19 AM:IMO, your comments on "people gonna die..." were more offensive than anything else. They were completely heartless. How can you take four lives taken by an [alleged] drunk and high driver so lightly? ...

This road is dark and scarey and all you see is headlights coming at you while you pray no one crosses the double line. I do think this will minimize the accidents and deaths. This does not exclude the drunk driver and people who speed thru, they do have to be accountable for their bad judgement.I have seen many crosses on this road and I pray for all those families who have lost someone special.
