FALLBROOK - Young painters, sculptors and performance artists will have their 14 days of fame when the "Art of Today, Artists of Tomorrow" exhibition opens Jan. 13 at the Art Center at Fallbrook, officials said.

Inspired by Brooke Thom, an 18-year-old Fallbrook artist who died after a car accident in San Bernardino County in 1999, the art show will feature between 150 and 200 pieces from about 70 high school-age artists, said gallery director Mary Perhacs.

"This year, many of the schools heard about the show and contacted us," said Perhacs. She said that art teachers at schools in Hemet, Anza, Vista, Oceanside, Escondido, San Pasqual and Fallbrook chose standout work from their students to submit to the exhibition.

She said small cash awards have been arranged and will be handed out Jan. 12.

That night, a Saturday, there will also be several performance art pieces by high school students.

Perhacs said she didn't know exactly what to expect in the performance art category, but that they will probably be well done, judging by the art submitted for display in the expansive gallery, at Main Avenue and Alvarado Street.

"If you saw last year's show, there was some surprisingly great work," she said. "Their work is not as amateurish as we would think. They're doing some very cool, very progressive things."

The nonprofit Art Center boasts Fallbrook's largest gallery and is inside a building that was once a drug store. It now holds about a dozen art shows a year, ranging from wildlife art to holiday art to specialty shows, such as the Mozart-inspired exhibition in January 2006.

Part of the show's strength is in giving teenage artists crucial gallery experience, Perhacs said.

"What's really great about the show is that it gives the teen artists an actual, professional place to show - what that's like, and the rules and regulations," she said. "It's a vehicle for their emotions, so it ought to be quite outstanding."
