North San Diego County Community News Briefs: Disaster fund receives donations

SAN DIEGO -- Through an outpouring of nationwide support, the Jewish Community Disaster Fund has received donations of more than $500,000 to assist victims of the recent San Diego County wildfires. The Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego's Grants Committee approved an initial $200,000 grant from the Jewish Community Disaster Fund to Jewish Family Service of San Diego to support these critical recovery services:
The Jewish Community Disaster Fund's second grant provided a gift of $1,800 to each of the 50 Jewish families who were identified as having lost a home, or whose homes suffered such severe damage that they are still uninhabitable.
The Jewish Community Disaster Fund is being used entirely to support people impacted by the wildfires. No overhead costs will be taken from the fund. Checks designated for the fund can be made payable to the Jewish Community Foundation and sent to: Jewish Community Disaster Fund, care of Jewish Community Foundation, 4950 Murphy Canyon Road, San Diego, CA 92123. Women's connection group to meet
SAN MARCOS -- "A New Year, A New You" is the theme of the San Marcos-Vista Women's Connection luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 21 at the Lake San Marcos Country Club, 1750 San Pablo Drive. Cost is $15.
"A Happy New You" fashion show by Sparkle Plenty will be featured. Robin Mitchell will showcase some of the latest fashions for the coming year.
Speaker Cathy Pjontek, a bookkeeper for a beauty supply company from Temecula, will share how to handle life's challenges with dignity and grace. She will tell her story "Walk this Way."
Linda Frank Escondido will entertain with "Songs for a New Year," and Winnie Pointer, group pianist, will provide background music.

Music Men to perform
VISTA -- The Music Men, a North County a cappella chorus, is set to perform, "This is My Country" when they headline the 2008 Inaugural of the Vista's library concert series, First Sunday at the Vista Library.
Sponsored by Friends of Vista Library, this one-hour salute to America be performed in four-part a cappella harmony when 30 members of The Music Men step into the spotlight at the Vista Library Community Room, 700 Eucalyptus Ave. The show will be held at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 6. English dance group to have New Year's Day dance
POWAY -- The San Diego English Country Dancers will have a New Year's Day dance from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Jan. 1 at the Academy of Dance, 12227 Poway Road. Writers group to meet
ENCINITAS -- Publishers and Writers of San Diego will hold its monthly meeting from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. The meeting topic of the meeting will be "Secrets for Successfully Working with Your Printing Company." Printing industry professionals Marty Gilliland and Chris Carpenter will discuss how to make the best decisions publishing business, how to work well with printers and how to get the desired final product. Gilliland was part of the inception of the group in 1994. Anyone interested or involved in writing, editing, publishing, designing or anything related to books is welcome. Help needed for blanket project
SAN DIEGO -- Help is needed for the Blanket Project for San Diego County wildfire relief to assist the 1,588 families who lost everything in the October wildfires. This assistance is needed in two ways:
Also, more squares are needed for blankets that are being made. People are asked to knit crochet, weave or loom 8-inch squares. They should be machine washable and dryable. If they are a wool blend, enclose a note so they can be separated in case of allergies.

Child advocates sought
SAN DIEGO -- San Diego's abandoned and neglected children need volunteer child advocates. All training is provided. Volunteers visit and lend support to the children, interview all parties involved and make recommendations to the court. Men and bilingual speakers are especially needed. SD Boat Show to be held
SAN DIEGO -- The 20th annual San Diego Boat Show will take place from Jan. 3 through 6 at the San Diego Convention Center and Marriott Marina. The show will include more than 500 boats and yachts, Twiggy the water-skiing squirrel, free boating and sailing lessons and an interactive kids' area, with a larger-than-life tsunami slide.
Show hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Jan. 3 and 4, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 5 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m Jan. 6. Each night the marina portion of the show will close at 6 p.m. Entrance fee is $10; $5 for youths ages 13 to 15; and free for children ages 12 and younger. College grads can work in state capital
The Center for California Studies of Cal State Sacramento is accepting applications to the Capital Fellows Programs. The programs are an opportunity for college graduates to engage in public service and prepare for a career. Fellows work 10 to 11 months as full-time staff members in the state Assembly, Senate, executive branch or within the California court system.

Palomar adds foreign language classes
NORTH COUNTY -- Palomar College's Spring 2008 class schedule includes several new sections of foreign language classes, including a Spanish video course. Responding to increased demand, the foreign languages department has added classes in French, Italian and Spanish. Many courses are offered at both the San Marcos and Escondido campuses and online and through Palomar College Television.

History center open house on tap
ESCONDIDO -- The Escondido History Center will host an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 29. See historical photographs and learn about Escondido's development in the Santa Fe Depot, see the Victorian country home decorated for the holidays, view the model train layout in the railroad car and observe a demonstration at the Bandy Blacksmith Shop. There will be door prizes and refreshments.
Since 1956, the Escondido History Center has worked to preserve the history of the "hidden valley." The center has collected and maintains thousands of artifacts, documents and photographs that collectively tell Escondido's story. The Escondido History Center is in Grape Day Park at 321 N. Opera competition set for Feb. 23
CARLSBAD -- Singers who specialize in opera are invited to compete in the Karlovy Vary Vocal Competition from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 23. Participants will vie for selection as the Carlsbad Sister City representative to the International Antonin Dvorak Vocal Competition in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic in November. A judges panel of distinguished members of the Southern California vocal music community will select first-, second- and third-place winners and two honorable mention awards; all awards feature a cash prize. The first-place winner also will receive travel expenses and entry fees to take part in the Karlovy Vary's Dvorak Vocal Competition.

Romance Writers group to meet
ESCONDIDO -- The San Diego chapter of the Romance Writers of America will now hold its monthly meetings in Escondido. The Jan. 19 meeting will feature Mary Castillo, author of "Switchcraft," "Hot Tamara," and "Friday Night Chicas"; and FBI public liaison April Langwell.
