Rivers' comments to Cutler are caught on national TV
By: MIKE SULLIVAN - Staff Writer | ∞
SAN DIEGO -- Philip Rivers denies he was yelling at Denver quarterback Jay Cutler in the fourth quarter of Monday night's football game, but video replays and Champ Bailey's comments suggest otherwise.
ESPN cameras caught Rivers apparently yelling at Cutler, with linebackers Matt Wilhelm and Shaun Phillips standing alongside him, after the Chargers' defense forced a fourth-down incompletion with 8:35 remaining in the 23-3 victory over the Broncos.
"I didn't say nothing to him," Rivers said Wednesday. "There were facial expressions looking that way, but I was talking to Shaun Phillips and Wilhelm. I was a third party in that deal. They were going at it way before I got on the scene."
Bailey, Denver's eight-time Pro Bowl cornerback, sharply criticized Rivers in a story that The Rocky Mountain News posted on its Web site Wednesday afternoon. Bailey called Rivers a "classless guy" and said he has lost respect for him.
"He's not a respectable guy right now, because you talk too much trash and do this and that, but you're really not a great player in this league right now," Bailey said. "You're surrounded by great players but you're not a great player. I think he needs to understand where he stands in this league -- where he stands on his team first and foremost."
Chargers coach Norv Turner said he spoke to Rivers about his conduct.
"I know guys get caught up in it," Turner said. "But he's young. I've talked to him and he understands where I'm coming from. Everything is a lot more visible."
Kaeding sidesteps damage
Kicker Nate Kaeding underwent an MRI exam on his injured lower left leg Wednesday, and the results came back negative, showing no structural damage.
Kaeding injured his plant leg on the opening kickoff of Monday's game while making a tackle. He kicked three field goals after the injury but eventually gave way to punter Mike Scifres on kickoffs.
Turner said he expects Kaeding to handle the place-kicking duties against Oakland on Sunday and would prefer to have Scifres focus on punting.
The Chargers plan to bring a few kickoff specialists in for workouts.
Et cetera
OLB Marques Harris underwent surgery on his broken right hand Wednesday morning, and coach Norv Turner said Harris is in jeopardy of missing Sunday's game. ... DT Jamal Williams (ankle, hip) missed Wednesday's light practice workout, but DE Luis Castillo (ankle) and ILB Brandon Siler (shoulder) were full practice participants. ... FB Lorenzo Neal (fibula) continues to make strides from the injury he suffered against Tennessee on Dec. 9. "He's working as hard as anyone can," Turner said. "I think he's making good progress. We just need some time. We need to have (playoff) success so he can get back at some point."

Everyone who has played sports knows that there is a psychological game that happens in any game. You get to a guy's head to get him off his game. The TV is only showing Rivers jawing and everybody thinks he is the instigator. Nobody even bothers why Cutler is even getting in on the exchange. Could it be that the Chargers "D" got to his head? Everyone is making a big deal out of nothing. Give me a break!
Joe wrote on Dec 26, 2007 11:35 PM:"Bye bye baby Cutler." The Broncos have been a good but dirty team over the years and now it servers them right to suffer. They chop block and even try to hurt players including the Chargers. If I'm not mistaken it was a 300 pound Bronco defensive lineman who dove on the pile after the play was over and injured Drew Brees' shoulder. I would prefer to see the Chargers talk MUCH LESS trash and show more class. What wasn't shown on tv is what the Broncos were saying to the Chargers to set them off. Their coach did show class by giving a lot of credit to the Chargers for being a good team and playing well in beating them badly twice. They couldn't even score one measley touchdown in 2 full games against the awesome Chargers defense. "Bye bye baby."

Chump Baily doesn't like getting torched by Rivers everytime they play. He needs to SHUT HIS MOUTH and make a play.

Joe wrote on Dec 27, 2007 11:05 AM:Has Rivers won a super bowl in his 1st year starting? No. Will he win one this year? Remains to be seen. Did Elway win a SB in his 1st 2 years? Not. Fouts? Nope. Marino? Negative. Hall of Fame Jim Kelly? No way. How about Drew Brees. No, he was 1-15 early in his career. Point is, we must remember, for all Rivers' foibles, he is only TWENTY FIVE YEARS "old" and he simply WINS GAMES! Does he have a good team around him? Yes. Chump Bailey said Rivers had not done "anything" in this league yet. Was Chump All Pro his very FIRST year starting? Maybe, I'm not sure about that one. Here are a few interesting stats (sorry for my fellow fans who don't like stats but I think even you will find them intersting). Against Chump Bailey and Denver Rivers has won ALL 4 games by an average score of 39-3 and this year by an incredible 64-6 margin. Talk about OWNING a 2 time super bowl winning team. His quarterback rating is an average of a SPECTACULAR 119.8 with a great percentage completion (including the many passes he is smart enough to intentionally throw away when there is nothing there) of 69.6% He has thrown for a total of 960 yards with a magnificent 7 touchdowns to just 2 interceptions in the 4 games he has started against the Broncos. He has the 2nd best record in the HISTORY of the NFL at home in his 1st 2 years of starting at a stellar 15-1 and a phenomenal overall record of 24-8 including the playoff loss to the Pats. Those are very compelling stats and simply stated, if you care to count WINNING GAMES as a relevant criteria, Rivers is one of the greatest quarterbacks ALL TIME in his 1st 2 years starting and whose accomplishments even legendary Dan Fouts recognizes. Is he the "Motor Mouth from the South"? You better believe it but that is the way he is and always has been. His coaches and team mates acknowledge that he is a great leader on the field and in the huddle and he proved in the Titans game this year that he can not only bring a team back and carry it to victory he even did it injured which gained the ultimate respect of his team. Is he slow and an awkward runner. Absolutely. Dan Marino was not exactly a world-class sprinter either. Does he have an awkward throwing motion? Yes, again much like the shot put delivery of Marino and about which AJ Smith was full aware of coming out of college yet he still wanted him over Eli Manning. Does he need to improve his footwork and look off his receivers better. Yes again. Just remember that he his only 25 years old and in only his 2nd year starting. Like him or not, Philip is a WINNER and the Chargers are fortunate to have him or perhaps his detractors would you rather have Volek starting or perhaps Craig Wielehan or John Freiz. Remember, the Charger must win TWO playoff games in a row this year to do better than Marty did last year and vindicate AJ Smiths's decision to fire him (Marty "won" the first game by not having to play it with his league's best 14-2 record).

Most Bronco fans really don't have anything against the Chargers, it's the Raiders we hate. However, Rivers and his crew were a little childish during that game and there's no denying it. John Lynch made bad call throwing LT's helmet but he was man enough to walk over and apologize, and did so again after the game. Trash talk is part of the game but there's a thing called sportsmanship too. Remember, today you're on one side of the game and someday you'll be on the other. You can talk a little bit but you owe your opponent respect too. Ask John Lynch and LT.

There was lots of trash talking last year and it seemed to pump up the Patriots and get the Chargers off their game. The problem with trash talking is that it takes away your game, someone else gets in your mind and all you start thinking about is how you are going to get back at them. Soon as that happens you're done. A key player like a quarterback needs to keep his head straight. Hopefully Turner talked some sense into Rivers because we've seen this act before.

Especially, the Broncos that has been so good perenially had been humiliated by the Chargers 64-6 in the last two games. So they are using this as motivation for next year (yawn)!
Just let it go, folks. The NFL best teams go in cycles so other teams will be better as time goes on. The trash talking is part of the game and that will continue. This should not be a big deal.

They made a national story about Ellis Hobbs celebrating on the middle of their field in last year's playoff, and yet when Rivers displays arrogance and cockiness, it's all just "part of the game?" Fans will be fans, but when LT went to the media to rip Belichick he threw down the glove and set the precedent that our boys are going to be the example to follow of class and sportspanship.
