Florence takes his demotion in stride
By: MIKE SULLIVAN - Staff Writer | ∞
SAN DIEGO -- Drayton Florence has received high marks for the way he has handled his midseason transition from starter to reserve. But that doesn't mean the five-year veteran is ecstatic about being the Chargers' third cornerback.
As second-year player Antonio Cromartie ascended to Pro Bowl status with an NFL-leading 10 interceptions, Florence's role changed to backup, equating to a substantial drop in playing time.
"Things happen throughout the course of the year and you have to roll with the punches," Florence said Wednesday. "It's not an individual sport. It's a team sport so the more I can do to help, the more games we can win and the more successful everybody's going to be. It's tough going from a starter to not being one. I still prepare like I'm a starter every game and that's what keeps me going.
"It's still tough. I'm not going to lie to you. But I still go out and make plays when I get in."
Florence fancies a return to starting status, and that likely means he will be moving on to another team following this season. He's in the final year of his contract and said he will deal with the situation after the season ends.
General manager A.J. Smith said Wednesday that he continues to negotiate with Florence's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, in hopes of reaching a contract agreement.
"I would love to have Drayton Florence continue to be a part of this football team," Smith said. "We've been talking on and off for three years and nothing has materialized. We will continue to talk. Even when he goes to the (free agent) market, we will continue to talk."
Smith gives Florence high marks for the way he has handled his business. Florence started the first 10 games of the season before being informed by defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell in mid-November that he would be a reserve for the remainder of the season.
"He's handled it well," Smith said. "He's in a contract year. He's a good football player. He works hard and he's helping us and he's contributing. There are different ways you can go. Some people can be dejected, go in the tank and have an attitude of 'I can't wait to get out of here.' Or you can say, 'Fine, I'm a professional football player on a very good football team and good things may happen to the Chargers and I want to be a major part of it.'
"More importantly than that, he knows that people are evaluating him each and every game. It's a business. He's a businessman and a heck of a kid."
The Chargers lead the NFL in interceptions (29) and takeaways (44), and the secondary has played a huge role in that success.
Florence, a second-round pick in 2003, is responsible for three of the takeaways, with two interceptions and one fumble recovery. He also is receiving credit for keeping things cohesive in the secondary after the Chargers promoted Cromartie at his expense.
"Drayton understands the situation," secondary coach Bill Bradley said. "The best thing about Drayton is that he's never gotten down on it and he stays alive and alert in practice. We still give him reps. He's been just a mature person about it, which I think is good."
Adds strong safety Clinton Hart: "Hats off to Drayton Florence. He's done an excellent job handling his situation and dealing with his situation. That's the biggest thing. Coach Bradley has done a great job keeping us together, to where in the past guys have been deciding to go in different directions as far as their thought process of where they should be in the system."
The compliments are welcome, but Florence is adamant about one thing.
"I know I'm a starter in this league," he said. "A.J. knows that. Our defense knows that. Everybody knows that I'm a starter."
But for now, returning to a starting role can wait. Florence is more focused on helping the Chargers go on a sustained playoff run.
"The chips will fall where they may," Florence said of his future. "You can't go playing during the season thinking about what's going to happen next year, because you don't even know what's going to happen on the next play. You have to go out and play and perform and everything else will take care of itself."

I do give him credit for taking his demotion without making waves. He is playing well and contributing. It sounds like he has matured some from last year.
Sam wrote on Dec 27, 2007 1:26 AM:Gotta disagree with you Joe...Dude's a starter, just not on this team...which speaks to AJ's brilliance and the team's depth...He's going to start somewhere next year and he'll play well...he'll probably have 3-4 teams bidding for his services...I'm sure he's learned from his hotheaded ways...he's going to make some money next year (Rosenhaus will make sure of it), just not with this team...good for him...Cletis or Oliver will step right in next year..right now, Florence is playing the slot really well, I'm glad he's in there!
Bobby wrote on Dec 27, 2007 8:16 AM:At least Smith is trying this time. Flo does get hot on some plays but he is still the seconed best corner on the team. (Playing part time and three times the picks as Jam)
Jaque wrote on Dec 27, 2007 8:29 AM:He'll go the same way Sam Davis, Terrence Kiel etc went if he doesn't learn to close his mouth.
BoltDan wrote on Dec 27, 2007 8:34 AM:Joe you are right on the money brother. Florence and Jammer were what last year??? OH 28th in pass defended...nice 28 out of 32 teams.... Now with Cro in we are what 15th... think what we could be... (shall I say it) with another Cro on the other side and Jammer at safety... OK all you jammer lovers can bash me now... but look at the stats people and watch the games.
mcaj100 wrote on Dec 27, 2007 9:04 AM:Flo is NOT the second best corner on the team. Interceptions are not the only measure of a cornerbacks skills. Jammer may not get many interceptions, but he is far more consistent than Flo.
Joe wrote on Dec 27, 2007 9:09 AM:I meant that the fact is that "Hands of Stone" (how many easy interceptions have you seen him drop over the years?) Florence is not a starter on this team now. The defense does not know he is a starter on this team anymore which is all they care about. They don't care what he could do on another team next year. Could he start on another team-probably but I am talking about this year and right now. Jammer now has a grand total of one pick and Florence has a grand total of 2 picks plus a fumble recovery so he has twice as many interceptions as Jammer not three times. Cromartie has over 3X as many interceptions as the 2 of them COMBINED. Florence is playing the slot very well and is, in his contract year, motivated to show he can play well which is good for the Chargers.
Chris wrote on Dec 27, 2007 9:17 AM:"seconed best corner on the team"
Not quite.
Interceptions aren't a great stat to go by. Everyone knows Jammer doesn't have hands, plus teams stayed away from Jammer and picked on Florence.
I remember earlier in the year, some site posted the stat that passes thrown at Florence were completed a league leading 85% of the time.
Yikes.
Joe wrote on Dec 27, 2007 9:18 AM:Thank you sir BoltDan. Not only does Crime Time Cromartie LEAD THE ENTIRE NFL in interceptions he is also highly ranked in passes defensed. "Hands of Stone" Florence and "Toast" Jammer are very physical and tough, strong corners but the fact is that neither have great ball skills and that is a huge facet of what that position requries to be a complete corner. Jammer, while only having the one interception which he looked good making, is playing the ball much better this year and, while nowhere near good enough even for 2nd alternate for the Pro Bowl, is having a good year overall. Between Crime Time Cromartie, Jammer and Florence the Chargers have a decent set of corners for the first time I can remember.
Sam wrote on Dec 27, 2007 9:26 AM:Don't know to much about football do you Dan?...Stats? You ever think that the passing stats last year were partly due to the fact other teams could not run and the Chargers were playing way ahead in a lot of their games...woops, Jammer had 4 picks last year shouldn't they have been better than 28th? He has one this year and they are fifteenth...you think stats don't always tell the tale?...The Steelers of the 70's rarely passed for over 200 yards...did their passing offense suck? Stats don't tell the whole tale...you watch tv film, you don't watch game film...what you don't see is Jammer forcing progression away from him....Seriously, as I stated before if Jammer sucks so bad why don't they go after him on every play?...When the Vikings were running on the Chargers did they stop running?..NFL coaches are merciless they go after your weakness until you can stop it...No answer BoltDan?...That's what I thought...YOU DON'T WATCH GAME FILM1!...Yep, you know so much more than AJ, Marty, Stewart, Cotrell, Bradley, Norv, Ross who all back Jammer...YOU'RE RIDICULOUS!
Jaque wrote on Dec 27, 2007 11:04 AM:Like I said before, the only thing Jammer is good for is a defensive pass interference call once a game, and the obligitory celebration after he "defends" on a pass that is clearly miss thrown. He has never lived up to his billing.
BoltDan wrote on Dec 27, 2007 12:06 PM:Jeesh! Did I hit a nerve??? First off SAM take a chill pill and don't get your blood pressure up! MY take on things and YOUR take my differ but it is all in the end OUR opinions... BUT as a ticket owner and viewer and FAN of the team I can pass judgment and not like something or someone. Second, stats are there and at the end of the season should we not find our weak spot? EVERYONE in the world has commented on our weak pass D for ever. Which explains taking corners in many drafts throughout time. IT IS, and I repeat IS the toughest position on the field to play. I know that and hopefully you know that. SO with that said do you want a tackler (re:safety)in that spot or would you like a nice cover guy who, OH I don't know, COVERS his guy... ala CRO who is responsible for that 15th rank pass D, NOT TOAST and JAM. I do watch the game live and on TV so you are correct I do not see nor do I think anybody else see anybody shying away from throwing it Jammer's way... as a matter of fact I saw them throw at Jammer the last few games explicitly... PROBABLY to stay away from the guy who has the league leading INT's... Finally I may be ridiculous but my eyes are open and I don't follow your demi-gods AJ/NORV/or JAM
Bob wrote on Dec 27, 2007 2:33 PM:Many of you seem to forget that the reason why they are corners and not receivers is because they can not catch the ball. Flo can go and say whatever he wants..if he was a starter then he would not have been put to second string and that is the reality.
Sam wrote on Dec 27, 2007 3:35 PM:Did I say they were my demi-gods...?...As Joe played for Florida and is familiar with game tape...I played at Colorado and am familiar with game tape...Corner no less...so I'm 300% certain that I know what I'm talking about in comparison to you Boltdan...You say the Chargers keep drafting corners...yep, sure have Davis gone, Florence moved down and that's right Jammer still playing...You think maybe the safeties had something to do with the pass defense...Jue gone, Wilson gone, Kiel gone...Norv and AJ aren't the only ones who like Jammer...your boy Marty said Jammer was playing at a pro bowl level last year...so who's right Marty or BoldDan the Ridiculous?..coaches aren't going to B.S. you...their job is on the line if you suck....they were explicitly going after Jammer...you know that for a fact right?...The difference between you and someone who knows what they are talking about is this...it's akin to all the fans who thought Vince Carter was the next great thing...because they covered all his highlight reel dunks ad nauseum on ESPN...that's all you fans see...you don't see the game tape...you don't see his defensive deficiencies...his streaky (at best) outside shot...all you see is the deep out being completed on Jammer...YOU DON'T SEE THE 10 PLAYS BEFORE THAT WHERE HE'S OFF THE SCREEN DOING HIS JOB...GUESS WHAT...CROMARTIE GETS DEEP OUTS COMPLETED ON HIM TOO...ARE YOUR EYES OPEN?...REALLY OPEN THEM WIDER AND WATCH SOME GAME TAPE...OTHERWISE YOUR OPINION IS NOTHING MORE THAN KNEE-JERK IGNORANCE!
horhay wrote on Dec 27, 2007 8:27 PM:florence is "starter" caliber. cromartie is just a superior athlete and will continue to grow. i like the match-up now against the pats if we play them. cro on moss, jammer on stallworth, and flo on the welker in the slot. We can take them. I like it that nobody is talking about the bolts right now.
horhay wrote on Dec 27, 2007 8:37 PM:Sam you hit right on the head with regards to the pass defense stats of last year. sure the secondary dropped interceptions, but that is one reason of many the play cb. teams did have to play from behind and pass more which inflates the numbers. only gripe on jammer last year were the penalties. but i rather have a p.i rather then a td.

ball-hawk cro and fancy flo. i think last years playoff headbutt turned drayton into a really tuff corner. no one wants to throw it jammers way. so they pick on the other corner. cromartie is obviously hand and eye talented. so florence is the strongest nickelback in the nfl. stay with the chargers FLO. we will soon be a dynasty

BoltDan wrote on Dec 29, 2007 11:49 AM:I will be truthfull, I will be there and jumping for joy... just like in 94.. Once again IT IS MY OPINION about Jammer/AJ/Norv. The corners and safeties have sucked years past, AND just because you are a washed up player doesn't mean you are watching anything less then I am.. I watch the game at the game andyes I watch Jammer get beat all the time. SO we can just disagree and watch the play-offs but ask your self what is the weakest part of our team (and ask your self the truth) because I gaurentee the opponents are looking at it too. True winning teams will identify there weaknesses and fix them. SO YOU CAN YELL AT ME all you want but your blind loyalty to follow bad players, (wait take that back) Not bad but weak part of the team, is your downfall and maybe why you didn't make it in the pro's. Reality sucks doesn't it... by the way I never said I know more then Marty, as a matter of fact I wanted him to stay.
GoBolts wrote on Dec 29, 2007 6:22 PM:Can you honestly say that we have not have any good Dbs for a while? What about Rodney Harrison? I know it's arguing the needle in a haystack, but you can't hit the extremes. Besides, the basis of our defense is our superior linebackers (which is why we play the 3-4 pretty well), and their blitzing tactics have definitely helped the interception numbers this year. You cannot deny that.
ADEE wrote on Dec 29, 2007 8:56 PM:actually i think nate kaeding is our weakness "boltdan". he's accurate, but anything over 45 yards or so is a toss up. and he has missed clutch field goals in both of our last two playoff games. not to mention he can't kick the ball in the end zone on kickoffs.but every team has weakneses, even the pats, im not impressed with there corners.i'll take dflo, jamm, and cro over samuel, hobbs, and gay anytime. its not always about individual talent when your playing ball. its a team sport, and the more you play with each other, the more you trust each other, therefore the more comfortable you become as a unit. you start to understand your teamates strengths and weakneses. long story short, if dflo decides to stay after this year i think this chargers secondary can be one of the top in the league. GO BOLTS
BoltDan wrote on Jan 2, 2008 1:54 PM:All interesting thoughts on who is the weakest... Rodney was a good player and still is... OH yeah he wasn't good enough to keep and now he has two rings... Even he could get beat deep as we all saw... and those late hits of his were killing us. So now that Flo has once again shown his bad playing skills against Oaktown... do we keep such a bad Corner?? I think not... where is the Oliver kid that we got in the suplemental draft??? lets find somebody or else the Brady's and Manning will pick Jam apart.
