Sailing ships to arrive in O'side Harbor
OCEANSIDE -- The tall ship Lynx will arrive in Oceanside Harbor at 3 p.m. Jan. 3. The Lynx is designed and built to interpret a privateer or naval schooner from the War of 1812. It is operated by the Lynx Educational Foundation.
Arriving at 3 p.m. Jan. 9 will be the Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain. Lady Washington is a reconstruction of an 18th century trading vessel that sailed from Massachusetts around Cape Horn to China. Hawaiian Chieftain is a 19th century trading vessel originally designed for use between the Hawaiian Islands. Both are operated by Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority.

'Splash' receives Award of Achievement
OCEANSIDE -- The California Parks & Recreation Society has selected Oceanside Public Library's starfish mascot, "Splash," to receive a prestigious Award of Achievement. The library's creative marketing campaign was recognized in the category of Agency Showcase for marketing materials and campaigns, and was selected from a field of 23 applicants. The award will be presented at the 2008 California and Pacific Southwest Recreation & Park Training Conference held in Long Beach in February.
Mission seeks artists for program

Expert to discuss veterans' benefits

Women start new year with purpose

City library to seek volunteers
CARLSBAD -- Carlsbad City Library is currently interviewing applicants for two volunteer positions, homework zone volunteers and circulation shelf readers. Homework zone volunteers are especially needed at Georgina Cole Library, 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive, and Centro de Informacion, 3333 Harding St. Volunteers provide homework assistance and study skill direction to students. A perfect fit for anyone interested in children and education and with an understanding of math and science. Circulation Shelf Readers are needed at Carlsbad City Library, 1775 Dove Lane. Detail-oriented volunteers are needed to help keep the library's collection of books and other materials in correct order so the public can easily find them on the shelves. Home meal delivery offered
CARLSBAD -- The Carlsbad Senior Center has a state-funded program that provides nutritious hot meals for homebound seniors who live in Carlsbad, ages 60 years and older, and are unable to prepare their own meals. City to launch family enrichment program
ENCINITAS -- The city of Encinitas is coordinating its winter schedule for the Family Enrichment Program, which will begin in January with activities planned through mid-March. Activities planned include the fifth annual Diversity Dinner, Valentine Crafts and a Leap Year Party. The Family Enrichment Program activities, events and outings are free and available to all Encinitas resident families only. Center to offer gentle pilates
ENCINITAS -- The Encinitas Senior Center will offer the "Gentle Pilates" class from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays at the center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. Seniors can add grace to aging by learning to move from the core, strengthen, lengthen and pick up new cues for better posture. Students bring a mat and pillow to class. Composer to host opera lectures
CARLSBAD -- Composer Harry Eiler will continue his series of free lectures and previews of the Metropolitan Opera's simulcasts to enhance appreciation and understanding of the opera. Eiler will speak from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 22 and Jan. 29 in the Schulman Auditorium, Carlsbad Dove Library. Eiler will discuss Parts I and 2, respectively, of Puccini's first success, "Manon Lescaut." After offering insights into the composer, his music and the opera, a large-screen performance will be shown in two parts. These free lectures are made possible by a grant from the Harry and Alice Eiler Foundation. Laugh for Recovery at the Belly Up

MiraCosta to offer credit ESL program
CARDIFF -- MiraCosta College, San Elijo campus, 3333 Manchester Ave., will offer a number of credit ESL classes that will help those people wishing to advance their English skills and earn college credit during the spring semester, which begins Jan. 22. Classes include:
-- The newly revised ESL Listening & Speaking (ESL 810) class helps students improve listening and speaking skills as well as their individual pronunciation.
-- Reading & Vocabulary Development (ESL 815), is sure to increase students' reading ability and expand their vocabulary for improved social and academic success.
-- The ESL Grammar course (ESL 820) is great for all students, from those just wanting to increase their current grammatical accuracy to those needing to learn sophisticated grammar required in transfer-level courses.
-- MiraCosta also offers a college-level transfer English class (English 100) that is specifically designed for ESL students.
ESL 802 and ESL 803 are two writing classes designed for non-native speakers who are making a transition to the use of academic English.
MiraCosta's credit ESL students can begin the program at the entry level and be ready to move to transfer-level English in one year or less. The college offers many support services to ESL students, including free tutoring, workshops, counseling, career services, financial aid and much more. Flexible class scheduling is also available: classes are offered mornings, afternoons and evenings as well as in one-, two- or three-day per week formats. Aquarium to host climate lecture series
SAN DIEGO -- The Jeffrey B. Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series, presented by the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla, will provide concise, comprehensive presentations on climate change and other research conducted worldwide by scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. The lecture series will include: "Climate Change Clues Frozen in Time," with Scripps Climate Researcher Jeffrey Severinghaus from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 14. Polar ice sheets are sensitive indicators of current climate and also preserve evidence of past climate conditions. Join Severinghaus as he explains how gas bubbles are trapped in the ice, how they provide detailed chemical clues to the past and how they are helping to shape future climate scenarios.
Meet "Future Stewards of Our Planet: Scripps Oceanography Fellowship Students" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 11. Learn about the challenging research work of three outstanding fellowship students at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, including climate science, sub-seafloor mapping and coastal oceanography.
