SAN DIEGO -- Police searched today for a man who robbed a San Diego Zoo security guard gathering the day's revenues from shops inside the closed attraction.

The robbery at at 2920 Zoo Drive in Balboa Park was reported at 6:28 p.m. yesterday, said San Diego police Sgt. Rich Nemetz.

The guard told police he was about to make his final pickup for the day when a man approached him, pointed a handgun and ordered him into a security vehicle.

Once inside, the man ordered the guard to drive through a zoo exit and onto Park Boulevard, where the guard was allowed to get out and the robber took the wheel, Nemetz said.

The guard was not injured and police found the stolen security vehicle a few hours later abandoned at Richmond and Upas streets.

The man is described as a Hispanic or white man in his early 20s, 5-feet- 9, weighing around 170 pounds. He wore a disguise, including Groucho Marx glasses, a fake nose and a black afro wig.

There has also been an armed robbery at the Wild Animal Park. These crimes did not take place when the guards were armed. These guards are responsible for carring large sums of money with NO protection. ... You do not see armored car drivers without weapons! It's called physical deterrent...if nothing else! Wake up people!
