Inland Community News briefs: OASIS class registration to begin

ESCONDIDO ---- OASIS will hold registration for its winter/spring 2008 classes, January through April, at the former Robinsons-May South, third floor, Westfield North County mall. OASIS, a national education organization for adults ages 50 and older, offers classes in the arts, humanities, sciences, exercise, health and wellness, consumer information and finance. Many different classes, special events and travel opportunities will be offered this semester.
OASIS membership is free; trimester registration fee is $3; and classes have a nominal cost.
Mail-in registration for classes must be postmarked by Jan. 2. Registration will be randomly drawn starting Jan. 2.
Walk-in and online registration will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 3 at the mall and at http://www.oasisnet.org.
Preregistration is required for all classes and activities. For a description of classes, call (760) 432-0635 or go to the Web site.
Rummage sale to benefit spiritualists
ESCONDIDO ---- A rummage sale to benefit the Harmony Grove Spiritualist Association will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 5 at 2975 Washington Circle. Information: Hilloah, (760) 739-1319.
Take a hike at Daley Ranch
ESCONDIDO ---- Free, guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch.
All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least a two liters of water and wear a hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths younger than 18 must be with an adult. No pets are allowed. Meet at La Honda Drive entrance.

Hearing loss group to host demo
ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Hearing Loss Association will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 12 in the Joslyn Senior Center auditorium, 210 Park Ave. Canine Companions for Independence of Oceanside will give a live demonstration of service dogs trained to perform practical tasks for deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Democratic club to meet Jan. 12
LAKE SAN MARCOS ---- The Lake San Marcos Democratic Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 12 in the Lake Pavilion, 1105 La Bonita Drive.

Nominate a V-Day 2008 hero
ESCONDIDO ---- As part of the worldwide V-Day Campaign to Stop the Violence, the Escondido event's steering committee will choose 10 everyday heroes, or "Vagina Warriors," to be recognized and honored at a cocktail party from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at Steve Storc's THEATRX, 155 E. Grand Ave.

Sundt Foundation supports hospice
ESCONDIDO ---- The Elizabeth Hospice Volunteer Training program has received a $2,000 grant from the Sundt Foundation. The grant will help train volunteers to provide compassionate end-of-life care to terminally ill patients and their families.
Sundt Construction is one of the nation's oldest and largest national contractors and is entirely employee-owned with offices in San Diego.
In November, 11 new volunteers graduated from The Elizabeth Hospice Volunteer Training Program. The next volunteer training will take place in February. Information: (760) 737-2050.
Pianist to perform Jan. 4
RAMONA ---- Classically-trained pianist Scott Pratt will perform Jan. 4 at the Performing Arts Center at Olive Peirce Middle School, 1521 Hanson Lane. Doors open at 7 p.m., followed by the concert at 7:30. A native of Escondido and accomplished performer, Pratt is on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Laney College of Oakland. Information: (760) 789-7474.

Garden club to host Pat Welsh
POWAY ---- The Poway Valley Garden Club will meet at 9 a.m. Jan. 9 in Templars Hall at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road
The speaker will be Pat Welsh, honorary Master Gardener, garden editor, columnist, TV host, author and landscape consultant. She will present "Colorful Plants for Patio Gardens," a slide-illustrated talk with detailed handout lists of many plants for specific patio situations.

Seniors sought to help in schools
NORTH COUNTY ---- The Seniors Helping Our Kids program is seeking senior volunteers to spend one hour a week helping a child read or with other subjects at elementary schools in Rancho Bernardo, Poway and Rancho Penasquitos. No experience is required. Call (858) 485-5449.

SAN DIEGO ---- Dachshund Rescue of North America, San Diego, has joined other animal welfare organizations that list their homeless pets on Petfinder.com, a large database of adoptable animals on the Internet. Blood drive yields 51 pints
FALLBROOK ---- Fallbrook Hospital Auxiliary hosts four San Diego Blood Bank visits each year. A recent one saw 63 local residents sign up and 51 pints donated. Betty Long, San Diego Blood Bank chairwoman for the auxiliary, said she was pleased with the turnout. She was assisted by volunteers Carol Faw, Joyce Gilson, Velna Wells and Roena Thompson.
