Chargers won't air dirty-play laundry vs. Titans

SAN DIEGO ---- Sunday's playoff game between the Chargers and Tennessee Titans is a rematch of a tense, hard-hitting affair that left both teams bruised, battered and accusing the opposition of dirty play.

Four players were fined by the NFL for their actions in the Chargers' victory, and a great deal more left with animosity toward the other side. Bad blood spread later in the week when Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman suggested that Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher put out a hit on him shortly before he left with an injury.

These memories are fresh. Just four weeks will have passed since the two teams played what many Chargers identify as their most physical game of the season.

Will the mudslinging continue? Will there be retaliation to avenge past wrongs?

Absolutely not, say the Chargers. Winning a playoff game for the first time in nearly 13 years would validate a season and mean more than exacting revenge for a cheap block or late hit.

"It's really do or die," Merriman said. "That's harsh to say, but it's true. You win and you go on, or you lose and you go home. It doesn't matter who we're playing, and I don't think there's any extra motivation because it's Tennessee. Everything that happened in that game, the league took care of it. I'm over it."

That's not just a case of players toeing the party line. Postseason victory is far more important for a group that lost heartbreaking home playoff games after the 2004 and 2006 seasons. Excluding the most recent expansion teams, only the Cincinnati Bengals, Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions have gone longer without a playoff victory than the Chargers, whose last postseason win came in the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 15, 1995.

That fact is not lost on this year's group, which is desperate to break a four-game postseason losing streak.

"I think that all of our guys know it," Chargers head coach Norv Turner said. "As I said, it can put pressure or it can give you great focus. I hope it brings us great focus."

Dealing with the extracurricular posturing stemming from the Dec. 9 game, the party line goes, would only detract from that effort. The Titans are merely a team that stands in the Chargers' way.

"There were some unfortunate plays in that game," Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said. "What happened, what didn't happen, what were the intentions ... it really doesn't matter. That's not going to really give us any added motivation this week. It's a playoff game. You really don't need much more than that."

Added linebacker Shaun Phillips: "It doesn't really matter who's on the field. I doesn't matter if my mom's cooking team is on the field. We'd put the same effort. All that matters right now is winning."

That outlook comes from playoff experience, from heartbreaking losses to the New York Jets in 2004 and last year's debacle against New England after a 14-2 regular season.

"(Last season) it felt so easy throughout the year," running back LaDainian Tomlinson said. "Winning something like 10 straight, you had to get to the point where we were kind of a little arrogant and saying, 'You know what?  We don't think anybody out there can beat us. We won 10 straight.'  You can have a tendency; it's human nature to do that.  We did that last year and we paid for it.

"This year, things have come tougher for us.  We have really been in some tough games.  We have lost some close games, some tough games, and we've had games where we just got embarrassed.  I think all that said, you go into the playoffs with a newfound respect."

Et cetera

Tennessee QB Vince Young will be day to day this week after reinjuring his right quadriceps muscle. His status for Sunday's game could be in question. "I can't really say right now if Vince is going to play this week," coach Jeff Fisher said Monday. Young said he aggravated the muscle in the first half of Sunday night's 16-10 win at Indianapolis and tweaked it further in the third quarter. He was replaced by Kerry Collins, who led the Titans to three field goals. Young was 14-of-18 for 157 yards when he left, and Fisher said Young could have returned to the game. ... Chargers coach Norv Turner said it would be a long shot for FB Lorenzo Neal (broken leg) to suit up on Sunday. ... Turner said LB Marques Harris (hand) and DT Jamal Williams (ankle, hip) will practice on Wednesday and should play. The Chargers have the day off today and will resume practice on Wednesday.

Where are the nattering nabobs of negativity? With some nice fresh salsa and that white sauce from Miguel's, come ye forward and eat thy crow. Repentance is good for the soul. There is a reason the professionals don't listen to armchair QBs. The difference between actually coaching in the NFL and your understanding is the difference between a brain surgeon and some mook who watched him/her on Discovery channel. So in the future, ranting critics, practice brain surgery on yourself (although you often write as if you already have). Go Norval. Go AJ. Go Spanos. Go Rivers, and Jammer, and McNeil and all the other professional players who are doing their best for the Chargers -- and ignoring the yammering yowlers.
Go Chargers.

Jimbo wrote on Jan 1, 2008 8:49 AM:NB, you may be right, but you're a little premature with your comments. Let's see how Norv navigates the NFL's post-season waters first. Remember, it's trust, then verify.

ricky wrote on Jan 1, 2008 10:13 AM:the Chargers will choke this Sunday. They can't handle physical play

Kathy wrote on Jan 1, 2008 10:39 AM:I've been a fan of the Charger's win or lose. I see some of our player's are injured and handling the physical aspect great....I think you would like to see the charger's choke but I think not....

ricz wrote on Jan 1, 2008 10:57 AM:How's about this guys, let the first round play out and then talk. If they win, and they advance to the divisionals, they got where Marty took them last year with a 14-2 season. If they lose, Norv has done what Marty has done the past 3 years, not win a playoff game. We hear it all the time, it's not what happens in the regular season, it's what happens in the post season. Besides, who do you blame more for their poor start? I don't blame Norv, I blame a Phillip Rivers who seemed to crack under pressure. He's been a different QB since he injured his knee in Tenessee.
As for Ricky, if you want to bash the chargers, do it on a tenessee site. Not on a site dedicated to Southern California sports fans. Choke or not, the worst charger player is better than you ever will be. There's a reason why their in the playoffs and you're on this site knocking them.

James wrote on Jan 1, 2008 12:10 PM:Hey ... Ricky,

Chargers can't handle physical play?...SCOREBOARD...I'm pretty certain they beat the TITANS OF DELIVERANCE...squeal like a pig Titan Boy...

Collins is playing...Young missed a game or two because of the same injury...even, if he could go his main asset would be nullified, and if that's the case...at this point I thin Fischer probably wants Collins to start and is just not letting on.

RICHARD wrote on Jan 1, 2008 2:57 PM:NORTHERNMOST BOLT HEAD WE ARE STILL HERE NORV IN MY OPINION IS NOT THE COACH OF THE FUTURE WERE YOU BLIND WATCHING THE OKELAND GAME BAD PLAY CALLING AGAIN AND AGAIN. WHY DO YOU LOVE TURNER SO MUCH I CANT FIGURE IT OUT FOR THE LIFE OF ME. IVE BEEN A FAN OF THE CHARGERS FOR 38 YEARS.AND WHY ALL THE NORV LOVERS ARE OUT THERE. WILL YOU BACK HIM IF THEY LOSE THE FRIST PLAYOFF OR WILL YOU HIDE OFF LINE. IM HERE AND ALWAYS WILL BE IF HE WINS THE PLAYOFF GAME I WILL BE AS HAPPY AS ANY CHARGER FAN BUT I WILL ALWAYS FEEL NORV IS NOT THE COACH OF THE FUTURE AND THATS MY STORY AND IM STICKING TO IT.

Joe wrote on Jan 1, 2008 3:07 PM:Happy New Year Chargers fans! Obviously Norv has introduced the word "obviously" to the Chargers and obviously now even LT and obviously especially Philip like to say the word obviously obviously way to often. Obviously it it tormenting to have to hear the word obviously used so many times every time Norv and Rivers talks obviously but if they keep winning I can obviously endure hearing the word obviously enuciated an inordinate amount of time obviously. Go Chargers..obviously.

richard wrote on Jan 1, 2008 6:06 PM:nmbolt i still think norv is not the one to coach the chargers. his play calling was back to lousy decisions. i thought he went backwards not forward in the plays. if you like him that muchthen he is your choice not mine. remember some of us will be here to rant and bag on norv. if we lose this weekend(hope we dont)were are you going to be. at least we who dont like norv take a stand and dont flip flop go chargers go fans

richard wrote on Jan 1, 2008 6:09 PM:oh yea leave your poor comments to your self

richard wrote on Jan 1, 2008 6:28 PM:that was for you nm bolt norv is not the coach of the future where will you be when he fails. hiding in the icycold up north.all the norv haters are still here and always will be. his play calling in the oakland game sucked no matter if we won or not. you have to be blind not to have seen that or in denielwe have great presonal but poor coaching

Bolt Backer 21 wrote on Jan 1, 2008 8:31 PM:I hope Young does play. Collins is a better passer than Young. Young's biggest attribute is that he can run. He has not been doing much running lately and has not been impressive. As for the Chargers not being able to handle a physical game....that is laughable! In the game against the Titans, it was clearly the Titans who wore out from the violent play. They broke down, took their ball and went home early. That game would have been 37-17 if it went a full 5 quarters, not just end in sudden death.

Dan of Temecula wrote on Jan 1, 2008 11:02 PM: Don't love Norv, but he is are coach, and one hell of an offensive minded coach. When he head coaches, he is different for whatever reason. That being said he has, along with Cottrel have stepped it up alot these last 6 weeks. We must find away to open the passing game up, by protecting Phillip more this time around, that in turn will allow L.T. to run for 175 to 200 yards on sunday, and never allow this game to be close. I think like any man of great football knowledge (Norv Turner) can turn his rep around, and maybe take the most talented team in the NFL all the way. If that happens do you (Turner haters) still think he should be fired? I believe that as long as we get somewhere past the 1st round of the playoffs, that we have to give Norv 1 more year to reach are for sure destiny. If we lose this week then I say see ya Turner, and hire Bill Cower who I believe would be interested in coming out of retirement to coach a super bowl caliber team. What do you think? Chargers all the way 2008!!! Final score 37-12

zenitrammarty wrote on Jan 2, 2008 12:28 AM:It is pretty obvious that the Chargers once again took their opponents lightly in the beginning of the game between them and the Titans. A come from behind strategy does not always work. Strangely enough it seems the Chargers are turning into to a react team. They see the other teams accomplish great feats. Then the chargers try to answer back. That one touchdown throw by Oakland's new quarterback seemed like a give me a charity toss. I mean both defenders were running around casually enough, you would have thought they were both on a Sunday stroll. The secondary has lost a bit of the fire they had earlier in the year. That ball belongs to your team. It is your home their coming to play in to steal your playoff hopes. I would highly recommend you get that fire back into your three, four defense. If you don't know what I am talking about just ask Igor or Tucker? Don't try to get that fire back by just trying to grab the other team as they run by you. This will only get you a penalty for your troubles and hurt your team. The front seven for defense have been keeping you in the close games. It is time for you to help the team again. Hello! AC,Jamm,Flor! Your team, your fans are asking for you to show up in the defense again? Are we asking for too much? We shall see come this Sunday! Minor miracles do happen!

and you hide like a rat...and this for all of you whom have negative about the
chargers then don't watch the game

Go Chargers!

BoltDan wrote on Jan 2, 2008 10:45 AM:I watched the game this week and still saw Norv muck it up... I know our players weren't really trying right??? I saw our O line look like Bull fighters ushering in the D linemen... I saw our famous Florence make his normal PI but Jammer was missing??? Maybe they are scared of him or just didn't get the memo to throw at him. I also saw the amazing offense that Norv is so heralded with... sic. Anyway if we play like that look out. I believe we are the most talent loaded team in the league I just wish we would play like it. We should kill the Titans and then comes the fun part with the passing game that is the colts. Let's just beat Tenn. then all you Norval Lovers can claim him to be as good as Marty.
