It's a Happy New Year for Chargers' Smith

GM rewarded for another division title with 5-year extension | Tuesday, January 1, 2008 9:56 PM PST

SAN DIEGO -- Ringing in the New Year in style, the Chargers resolved to continue the franchise's recent run of success by signing general manager A.J. Smith to a five-year contract extension through the 2014 season.

The extension, announced Tuesday, is worth a reported $11 million. Smith's deal was due to expire after the 2009 season.

After Sunday's regular-season finale in Oakland, team president Dean Spanos approached Smith and informed him he would like to extend Smith's contract. The two agreed to terms after meeting on Monday.

"It was a pleasant surprise," Smith said via phone from his office. "I'm looking forward to staying here in the future, no question about that.

"There's a lot of work yet to be done. I've spent five years at it already and I'm very appreciative of him wanting me to continue working with him and into the future."

Smith, 58, became the Chargers' general manager in 2003, when he was promoted from assistant GM in the wake of the death of John Butler. He has orchestrated the rebuilding of a franchise that went 1-15 as recently as 2000.

In the past four seasons, the Chargers have gone 46-18 in the regular season. Only New England and Indianapolis have won more games in that span.

"It's been a continual work in progress, but I think he has put together the roots of a championship team and I think his performance in the last four years speaks for itself," Spanos said via phone from Las Vegas. "One positive thing he's done is he's kept this team intact for the next four or five years by signing (26) key players to long-term deals (through 2010), which I hope will give us the continued consistency of being in the playoffs.

"If anybody deserves to be here for that, he does because he really helped build this. Besides, I've worked with him for six years and I feel comfortable working with the man and I think he feels comfortable working with me.

"I felt it was in the best interests of the club."

The extension comes on the heels of an 11-5 season that represents the franchise's third division title in four years. The Chargers host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs.

Though the Chargers have yet to win a playoff game during Smith's tenure -- their most recent postseason victory came during the 1994 season -- he has received high marks for his keen ability to recognize talent and his shrewd maneuvers.

Among the players the Chargers have drafted under Smith are cornerback Antonio Cromartie, center Nick Hardwick, outside linebacker Shawne Merriman and quarterback Philip Rivers. The Chargers also landed guard Kris Dielman and tight end Antonio Gates as undrafted free agents; both are now Pro Bowlers.

This season, Smith's top transaction was the acquisition of Miami receiver Chris Chambers for a second-round draft choice. However, his top overall move happened on the first day of the 2004 NFL draft, when he drafted quarterback Eli Manning first overall despite Manning's public stance that he didn't want to play for the Chargers.

Smith then traded Manning's rights to the New York Giants for Rivers -- the fourth overall selection -- and future draft picks that netted Merriman and Pro Bowl kicker Nate Kaeding.

"I would say the reason they're saying that is (the best move is) because of the impact that came with the Eli Manning situation, which was a terrible situation that we lived through," Smith said. "When people look back at it, I think they line up all those players and I think that's why it's talked about so much."

After the 2005 season, Smith made another gutsy move when he declined to re-sign popular Drew Brees and opted for Rivers as the starting quarterback.

"I like the fact he's not afraid to make difficult decisions even though there's a risk in it," Spanos said. "He was criticized immensely for picking between Drew Brees and Philip Rivers, and he believed that the upside with Philip could be greater. No guarantees, but the safer thing to do may have been to stay with Drew."

Smith will be 65 when the extension ends. But Spanos made it clear that Smith's reign doesn't have to end in 2014.

"If he wants to be the general manager longer, that's fine with me," Spanos said. "His name comes to the surface when people talk about the better general managers in the National Football League."

I'm so sorry Bobby-Boy & Roy. Truly, DEEEEEPLY sorry (although I don't know why I can't stop smiling. Maybe I've got issues?)

Guess we're all going to have to live through at lest 5 more drafts... yuck!!

Sorry Again guys. What a horrific way to start a new year.

Maris wrote on Jan 1, 2008 2:11 PM:Gee, I think they should have waited and seen if the Chargers can win a playoff game BEFORE they tendered this offer.
I still think Norv is not the right leader for this team, but only time will tell.

markus wrote on Jan 1, 2008 2:41 PM:don't kick the chair out Bobby.... perhaps we can talk through this....... bobby??????? NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Sean C, wrote on Jan 1, 2008 4:38 PM:I was wondering when they would sign him to a much deserved extension. Plenty of other teams would have paid far more than 11 mil for 5 yrs.

Mark wrote on Jan 1, 2008 7:26 PM:THAT SUCKS!!!!!!!!

AJ Should go bye-bye.

Daren wrote on Jan 1, 2008 8:21 PM:For those who don't like this transaction, let's hear some valid reasons why not. AJ has robbed two separate teams(falcons & midgets) and built one of the most talented teams in the NFL. By the way, this moderator sucks for not posting my previous messages.

Truthspitter wrote on Jan 2, 2008 8:17 AM:AJ is in the top 3 GMs in the NFL probably. The team is loaded with talent and he handles the cap brilliantly.

Great move.

Bobby wrote on Jan 2, 2008 8:54 AM:We need to ask ourself. Is this move proof of why you just do not give your little kid a NFL team? OR... Another shrewd move by Alex to move the Chargers out of town,,, like his OK to hire a coach with a two time loosing record? In any event, Chargers fans will get to continue hearing those classic statments like, "this is my push year" and my new personal favorite "seeding means nothing to me",,, statments of ignorance for anyone with a IQ higher than Forest Gump!

PDP wrote on Jan 2, 2008 9:45 AM:YEAH, what Daren said.........

BoltDan wrote on Jan 2, 2008 11:05 AM:Bobby you forgot the "It isn't how many games you win, but how many play-off games you win" THAT will be the funniest qoute that all should remember when he fired a winning coach for the losing coach. Then this year I heard Spanos say "It is all about getting to the play-offs so we get a shot at the superbowl" WHAT???!!! that is what Marty does the best. AND YOU LET YOUR HOUND (AJ) FIRE HIM BECAUSE OF THE EGO.... oh well as lots of us have said he does find talent, but if he wants to coach the team he should just name himself!

Markus wrote on Jan 2, 2008 11:09 AM:Bobby, statements & personality aside, critique his performance on a league-wide level since taking over the GM role of a 4-12 team coming off 8 straight losing seasons. Most would consider this turnaround (from bottom dweller to top-5 & poised to improve) a Herculean effort worth reward.

Some Perspective: I was one of the pride less fools suffering in the stands of 1-16 with 3/4 of the crowd in visiting apparel mocking and taunting our hapless lads. Perhaps you didn't live through that nightmare of a decade; I did and it scarred me. Only Cinci was more absurdly pathetic than we were. Are you finding this team more difficult to watch than those Craig Whellihan led..Jermain Fazande backed dynamos? If no, than your rants ring petty and personal. If so, I think we all require a better explanation as to AJ's failings to this point.

Bobby wrote on Jan 2, 2008 11:32 AM:How fast we forget A J is the GM? Buddy Nix and his people are the one's who go find the Tuckers and Merrimans and build the draft board and FA board. Smith then makes the pick and fans and media give him the credit! Give credit where it is due,,, to Buddy Nix! For every Nix's Merriman, there is a A.J. Smith David Boston, every Rivers is a Brees and so on.

A game where the head coach won`t go for it on 4th & 11 and then blame it on Cam Cameron when Marty should have gone for a field goal which is the pt margin we lost by. We`re 9pt favs this sunday so quit your bickering & make the Q the loudest it`s ever been ARE YOU WITH ME ?

BoltDan wrote on Jan 2, 2008 1:30 PM:Bobby you da man... you tell those lovers of egomanic's. AJ is not a god, maybe to some but others see through his house of cards. OH and I do believe he is aiding in Spanos getting the team out of SD.

Jaque wrote on Jan 2, 2008 2:06 PM:I think AJ is a fine GM. I didn't and don't agree with his hiring of Norv, but I didn't like the hiring of Marty either. Washed up retreads is what I called both. However, as far as scouting talent, brokering deals, his "record" is fine in my book. Let the cards fall where they may, and save further critique of this mysterious Charger team after they win the Superbowl, or otherwise get booted from the playoffs.

ADEE wrote on Jan 2, 2008 7:40 PM:its amazing to me how some charger fans would question this deal.all a.j. has done for this team is build it into one of the most talented teams in the league, and a playoff caliber team year in and year out.did you fans actually like to be 1-15,4-12,7-9....im just saying this team has a legit shot to win a sb this year, if not this year, then in the very near future.and a.j. has had a big hand in making that possible. correct me if im wrong but i wouldn't necesarily call the chargers a winning franchise in this league, but they can be. and with this combo of talent that has been assembled, i like the big picture.GO BOLTS!

Chappy wrote on Jan 2, 2008 9:59 PM:AJ Smith is without a doubt the best GM in the NFL and his ignorence is the reason why. Everyone, Bobby and Boltdan are still drunk from new years so forgive them if there wearing beer goggles. First off, let me be the first to say your arguments make no sense and have no logic. Bobby, Bill belichek had a losing record like turner before kraft took a chance on him; and, Turner never had a team in washington or oakland like the team he has now so dont bring up records. Norv already has done something marty could'nt do and thats go to the playoffs faceing a first place schedule(2005); and after sunday have success in the playoffs. Then you bring up Buddy Nix? Last I heard he is an "assistant GM"!!! These scouts are Aj's scouts not Nix's scouts and only one person pulls the trigger and thats AJ. Maybe we should give Aj the credit for John Butlers teams in Buffalo as well? Give me a break that is the most absurd opinion ive ever heard. Who are you trying to fool? Boltdan(haha)?? For all the great decisions Smith has made only the Drew Brees and Donnie Edwards situations have been questioned(smith didnt fire marty). Edwards is old and cried for an extension due to what he did in the past, and smith was thinking about the future. Rivers is 25-7(15-2 at home) as a starter and only a few AJ haters like yourself actually think that was the wrong move. Go figure. Let me suggest something to you Bobby. Next time you express your opinion on Football that it be to little kids because you arent convincing anybody here.

Norv wrote on Jan 3, 2008 10:09 AM:Thanks everyone for sticking up for me. I really try hard to get the guys going and they sometimes listen to me but other times not so much. I do owe my mentor AJ a few favors for giving me a shot again. He is such a swell guy although he keeps telling me how to run this team, Is That Odd? Well lets all hope for a W this week if not oh well, there is the next few years. Thanks, Norvalicious

Andy wrote on Jan 17, 2008 9:38 PM:Mark,

I totally agree I think that AJ should go bye-bye too.
