Man bringing two fun centers to Temecula

Trevi center owner converting former gym, promises bowling alley at another | Wednesday, January 2, 2008 9:25 PM PST

TEMECULA -- Michel Knight has big plans to bring big fun to Temecula.

He already transformed a long-abandoned Kmart in Lake Elsinore into Trevi Entertainment Center, a 92,000-square-foot bowling alley, sports bar, arcade and party facility.

Now, using that same method, the entrepreneur is converting what used to be a 24 Hour Fitness gym off Ynez Road into a 20,000-square-foot fun spot called Game Point.

Where there used to be dozens of weight machines and exercise bikes, there soon will be 250 arcade games -- classic and new -- as well as rides for young children. About half of the games will be of the "redemption" variety, Knight said, meaning they spit out tickets that can be collected and redeemed for toys and other novelty items.

And where people used to sweat during intense aerobics classes, they soon will be able to gather for group parties in a variety of themed rooms.

"There isn't a lot of family entertainment in Temecula," Knight said. "It's all for adults -- either drinking or gambling."

Knight isn't finished once this center opens, which he hopes will happen by the end of January. He has something even bigger in the works.

Pending final negotiations, Knight will bring a "Trevi South" to Temecula in the form of a 40,000-square-foot bowling alley and party center.

The new center, which he hopes to open by summer, will have 20 lanes and private bowling will be available. The Trevi center in Lake Elsinore, which opened in July, has 48 bowling lanes.

Knight said he is not yet able to say where the new entertainment center would be in Temecula as negotiations are not complete.

"Temecula is going to get its bowling alley," Knight said with a smile.

Temecula Councilwoman Maryann Edwards said city officials have been trying for a couple of years to find someone to bring a bowling alley to town.

"It would be a great amenity, a great place for kids and families," she said. "I think it would be terrific."

But with Trevi's bowling alley in Lake Elsinore and Brunswick Cal Oaks Bowl in Murrieta, can a third bowling alley succeed in Southwest County?

"With the population we have in the valley, I think it can be supported," Edwards said.

Along with the day-to-day customers, she sees a demand for youth and senior leagues, as well as a place that can be used by nonprofit organizations.

Knight, obviously, agrees.

"There is also a huge need for banquet rooms in the area and we will have those," he said of both Game Point and the Temecula endeavor.

Knight said rooms at all of his centers can be used for birthday parties, class parties, community and professional meetings and bachelor parties.

As soon as he said bachelor parties, Knight laughed and added: "Nobody is jumping out of a cake."

He says Trevi in Lake Elsinore books an average of about 60 parties a weekend. There are seven party rooms in the Lake Elsinore center, the largest holding up to 400 people.

Knight said the largest one in Temecula will be for about 180 people. The cost per person for the party rooms at his centers ranges from $12 to $19, he said.

"There are so many different packages available to people," Knight said.

"This is for the whole community; a get-together place for people," Knight said of his current and future facilities.

"Gun Point" wrote on Jan 2, 2008 8:56 PM:I think 'Gun Point' ought to be a more fitting name for this establishment. Just what Temecula needs...a hang-out for the local banger thugs and truancies. Do you ever notice how arcades and carnivals attract bangers? Just visit the Midway at the County Fair in Del mar each year, especially at night. I swear, it looks more like a convention of East L.A. gangsters!

Bill at FVE wrote on Jan 2, 2008 9:29 PM:Sounds like a great idea to me!

I hope this place works out. wrote on Jan 2, 2008 9:44 PM:One would think that a nice bowling alley with games rooms and party rooms would be just the thing for a fairly family-oriented town like Temecula. Mr. Knight, you're heart is in the right place, but keep it a respectful business with plenty of security around. At the first sight of up-to-no-good teenagers loitering on a Friday night, I'll have to choose to take my family elsewhere.

Great Idea wrote on Jan 2, 2008 9:53 PM:Great Location with plenty of parking.
This town needs this for the young
and old.

Al wrote on Jan 2, 2008 10:45 PM:Can you do this in Escondido?

Dear Gun Point wrote on Jan 3, 2008 12:44 AM:Let's not build ANYTHING ANYWHERE because there's a chance that a gang member might show up... Ridiculous! Temecula has successfully deterred gangs, and if you think they are going to stand by and let that element get a foothold, you're just plain stupid. Mr. Knight's operation is a great family-oriented place. We've been several times in Elsinore with our church group, and it's fabulous. This will be a great thing for Temecula families and teens! And there will be jobs for the kids too. It's a win-win and thanks to the city and councilman Edwards for the support for our kids.

Mark wrote on Jan 3, 2008 6:16 AM:I have a PHd in Bio Chemistry/ Engineering and just got laid off from Guidant - am I overqualified to manage the bowling alley?

Deterred Gangs? wrote on Jan 3, 2008 7:28 AM:Huh? When? You don't live in Temecula do you? There IS plenty of thugs in the city and they won't go away. I think you should lock yourself in the church and pretend it'll all go away. 20 lanes? Are you kidding me? Remember Pinky's? Oh, yeah, I forgot, most of you only got here a couple of years ago and have no idea what I'm talking about.

David wrote on Jan 3, 2008 8:07 AM:We need people who clearly have more imagineering for the valley - rather than video games and bowling.

History wrote on Jan 3, 2008 8:21 AM:Does anyone know why "Pinky's Bowling" had to quit?

Eddie wrote on Jan 3, 2008 8:34 AM:How about some made for the US arcade games? Seems the majority of the games in the Lake Elsinore facility are refurbished Japanese arcade games. Maybe you bought them at a discount to save money, but that's not going to fly anymore.

Mark C wrote on Jan 3, 2008 8:46 AM:Interesting, I've lived here ten years now and haven't seen anything to indicate out of control gang activity. Oh yeah, there is the occasional graffiti by ... wanna-be's.

Bill at FVE wrote on Jan 3, 2008 11:21 AM:Temecula has a minimal gang issue. Adding things for kids, teens and families to do is NOT going to increase the gangs. Beyond that, I am a bowler and I don't see gangsters hanging out selling drugs and pimping hoes when I bowl in my Vegas league at Cal Oaks; I see people having fun. I look forward to bowling at this facility in the near future, its too bad Mr Knight built Trevi in Elsinore in the first place, it would have been a great addition to the Temecula entertainment scene.

GeeVee wrote on Jan 3, 2008 12:07 PM:I saw all those video games the other day, now it makes sense why they are there. Have tried to go bowling in Murrieta a couple of times and the wait was sooooo long. Sounds Fun!!
Also try growing up in Paradise Hills (near National City, San Diego County) total gangsville at my middle school, good thing we moved to OB during high school. This area is nothing like Paradise Hills, everyone has bars on there windows and door, even we did. Venture out of this valley and see real crime and slums.

Concerned-1 wrote on Jan 3, 2008 1:05 PM:So why did Pinky's close? I thought it was because of mismanagment and high lease rates. Before it was Pinky's it was just a cool bowling alley and did very well.

Concerned-1 wrote on Jan 3, 2008 1:07 PM:Anything for teens now a days would need lots of security. These places attract the bad kids, but then it gives the cops the opportunity to see them in the light. Could work out fine.

Bill at FVE wrote on Jan 3, 2008 2:01 PM:Concerned-1 - your way off base. These places attract customers - some of them might be bad, but the vast majority are not. My tip to you - remove head from sand before speaking. :)

Gary in Murrieta wrote on Jan 3, 2008 2:50 PM:My 9 year old daughter asks me every week, "When is there going to be an Ice Skating Rink?". Our favorite suggestion is one of the abandaned furniture stores off of Los Alamos and the 215. The abandaned furniture off of Murrieta Hot Springs is another good choice. You know the one, it is next door to that new Super Asian Seafood Buffet.

Concerned-1 wrote on Jan 3, 2008 3:48 PM:What? My head's in the sand because I see an opportunity for the police to identify bad actors? Sorry Bill at FVE, but you're the one who's head is somewhere else.

Jen wrote on Jan 3, 2008 4:00 PM:Was Pinky's the place behind Corner Pocket?

And by the way there are really no gang-bangers in Temecula. In fact the concept makes me wanna laugh. Its just a bunch of middle class kids with nothing better to do then dress badly and act snotty.

Concerned-1 wrote on Jan 3, 2008 4:40 PM:Pinky's was the bowling alley on Montezuma in Temecula behind The Beacon.

MeL wrote on Jan 3, 2008 4:43 PM:The Trevi center in Lake Elsinore has been a WONDERFUL addition to our city. There is security, and a dress code. I have been several times (even into the late evening hours) and have always felt safe. The Trevi Entertainment center is much more than bowling. Trevi has provided a safe place for kids, teens, young adults to go. It is an alternative to hanging out in some "no good" places. Trevi even noticed the cost was too much for cosmic bowling and since has LOWERED it since their opening. Name another business that has repsonded in this manner in our Valley?! Go out and visit the Trevi center before you make remarks. It is better to have had some experience before you start-in on what a BAD idea it is.

Jenn wrote on Jan 3, 2008 5:24 PM:Oops I meant the beacon....my dad's work used to always have bowling tournaments there......so much fun

Well I've been to trevi and it is a nice place. They do control the situation very well. The cosmic bowling was a lot of fun and reasonably priced too. The food is delicious also.

Lol at "Gun Point" wrote on Jan 3, 2008 9:10 PM:That was the first thing I thought about too when I read this. The gang members and trouble makers are the reasons I don't go to Magic Mountain and Boomers in Vista and Clairemont. Ewwww... then these places ALWAYS fall into disrepair.

NO FEAR wrote on Jan 3, 2008 9:13 PM:I can see where everyone is coming from on this as yes these places can be a disaster, where some can actually work out well. However if we start living in a way that says we will do nthing for young people because we fear a bad element. That is letting the hoodlums win. just like terrorists, gangs want people to live in fear. The answer is not to avoid new places, but rather make our voices loud when we see something wrong. There are plenty of problems at sports events, malls, etc... again it is what we allow and what we empower our police to do that makes the diff.

Really wrote on Jan 3, 2008 9:32 PM:Glad we have one cop per 1,000 people. We will need it now!

matt wrote on Jan 3, 2008 9:53 PM:i agree with gary..that would be something fun and occupy an otherwise empty space plus bring tax money to the city which obviously cant seem to get enough of that
sounds better than a waterpark which will bring people from all over LA

Dear Really wrote on Jan 3, 2008 10:43 PM:It's now one police officer per 846 people! The best in SoCal and the reason we have little serious crime or gang activity. This place will NOT fall into disrepair nor will it become a gang hangout.

ModernRock wrote on Jan 3, 2008 10:47 PM:I agree with MeL. It's about time! The Trevi Zone in LE is a great place to have some fun. Temecula needs this type of entertainment.

Hey Deterred Gangs? wrote on Jan 3, 2008 10:50 PM:We've lived here since 1987. Pinkies was a great place BEFORE it became Pinkies and was badly mismanaged. The Assistance League bought the building in 1997, rehabbed it, and now uses the proceeds from that Castaways Thrift shop to clothe over 1800 needy kids in Elsinore, Murrieta, Temecula, Canyon Lake, and the County. They provide all new clothing and spend about $150,000 a year. It's an all volunteer organization. Pretty neat. BTW There's one gang on Pujol St. made up of middle school kids. The city knows every name and keeps track of them all. School district is on top of it too.

To Matt wrote on Jan 3, 2008 10:54 PM:The only city tax you pay is sales tax. Property tax goes to the state and the city gets almost none. Don't like the city sales tax? Stop buying things, or shop elsewhere. But that's the money that pays for ALL city services and amenities - it paves our streets, builds our parks and libraries, and pays for police and fire protection for starters. We don't mind paying that tax because we get a great return on our investment living here in beautiful Temecula!

Bill at FVE wrote on Jan 4, 2008 8:21 AM:Concerned1 - I don't understand what you are even talking about - bad actors? What? This will be a good thing for the kids and families in the community, bring in tax dollars and fill an empty space in one of the biggest centers in town. It is a win, win, win situation as I see it.

Concerned-1 wrote on Jan 4, 2008 10:32 AM:I apologize Bill at FVE. I agree it will be a positive to the community. I was a little off yesterday and my comments reflect. Still I think security is a key to its success. Regards, C-1.

Gun Point wrote on Jan 5, 2008 1:27 AM:Thanks to 'LOL' for agreeing with me. The rest of these writers are ignorant and in total denial about the association and attraction of the gang element with amusement joints. You're absolutely right about Magic Mountain, and Boomers (Vista & Clairemont). In fact, they ought to just rename Magic Mountain as 'Banger Mountain'..and Boomers as 'Bangers'! How's that for creativeness? It used to be that this ... segment of the population was too poor to afford admission to these theme parks, but any more these days, it's their drug and extortion money that affords them these luxuries. I don't want my kids anywhere near these people. They get enough compulsory 'diversity' training in their schools...they don't need to accept the kind of diversity we're seeing at these amusement parks.

To Concerned 1 wrote on Jan 5, 2008 2:57 AM:A very nice apology. A breath of fresh air for these usually nasty blogs. We do need a bowling ally and more things for teens to do.

Ingrid wrote on Jan 5, 2008 4:28 PM:I WANT AN ICE SKATING RINK ! Please.

Gary in Murrieta wrote on Jan 6, 2008 9:31 PM:My daughter really wants an ice skating rink so bad.We don't like to drive to Riverside or Escondido.

Dear Ingrid wrote on Jan 6, 2008 11:35 PM:You are free to purchase a 60,000 square foot building and build one! Of course, you'll have to charge about $65 per person for a two hour skate session due to the high cost of the land, high construction costs, and cost of the electricity it will take to keep the ice frozen. That's why no one is building an ice skating rink. It would be a money losing operation. But don't let that stop you!

To Dear Ingrid wrote on Jan 7, 2008 10:27 AM:There are so many empty and about to be empty furniture stores in Murrieta. Maybe someone will sell one cheap. The ice skating rinks in the City of Riverside and in Escondido seem to be doing quite well.

Bring you groups to Ice Town and receive special discount rates. wrote on Jan 7, 2008 1:58 PM:Public Session Schedule are at least 6 hours per day and group rates of 10 to 20 people will only cost each person $9.00. Even at 12 dolllars or so that is not anywhere near the $65 that one poster is trying to sell. I am 12 years old I can figure skate and speed skate with the best of them.

frank s wrote on Jun 3, 2008 10:03 PM:Pinkys used to be over by sizzler. 20 lanes isnt enough for a bowling all. do you know how fast those will fill up? It wouldnt even fit a whole senior league.

just a suggestion for they bowling alley...play some good music no 60's pleaseeee lol like new rock or have a rock n blowl thing with black lights and rock music!
