Chargers raise possibility of blackout for Sunday's game

Some fans say Charger fever has cooled | Thursday, January 3, 2008 10:39 PM PST

Bill Seargeant points to one of several television screens as he and Ken Baker, right, watch sports at Rookies Restaurant and Sports Bar in Oceanside on Thursday. "Someone will buy them up" said Baker, who was not worried when asked about the possibility of Sunday's Chargers game being blacked out because of the remaining tickets for the game are still unsold.

NORTH COUNTY ---- So far, Charger fever is just a fizzle ---- and fans face a TV blackout of Sunday's game if the team doesn't sell its last 500 tickets to the game by this afternoon, officials said Thursday.

The National Football League extended the deadline for a sellout by 24 hours on Thursday afternoon, but if the tickets aren't sold by 1:30 p.m. today, the American Football Conference West wild-card game against the Tennessee Titans won't be televised here, Chargers officials said.

Folks offered varying reasons for the slow pace of sales. Some said the game will be a snoozer, with the favored Chargers trouncing the Titans. Others said they feared a repeat of last year's fourth-quarter playoff loss to the New England Patriots. Heavy rains and strong winds expected this weekend also may be a factor.

League policy requires that games be sold out 72 hours in advance of the kickoff in order for them to be broadcast in a team's TV market. That policy is designed to increase the likelihood that a team can sell out its games.

On Thursday afternoon, Chargers officials would not offer an opinion on the likelihood of a sellout. Chargers tickets were still available at the box office and through Ticketmaster at prices that ranged from $100 to $135 each.

"Can you predict fan behavior?" said the Chargers chief operating officer, Jim Steeg, "We need fans to come out and buy these tickets."

North County fans, however, said they were optimistic that the game would reach their big screens.

"They're not going to black the game out," season ticket holder Nick Moss of San Marcos. "Somebody's gonna step up and buy the tickets."

Still, Moss said last year's meltdown, and the fact that he has to attend a wedding Sunday, prompted him to try to sell his playoff tickets on the online marketplace Craigslist. There were about 1,200 advertisements for Chargers tickets on that Web site Thursday afternoon.

"(Last year's loss) was a heartbreaker," Moss said. "I didn't want to let myself down again."

Other fans said they were waiting for Sunday's game before they let themselves get hopeful about the Chargers postseason chances.

"They need to get that first game and get a win," said Jim Dvorak of Vista, as he and his son, Colin, ate at Oggi's Pizza and Brewing Co. in Vista. "Let's get through this weekend at home and then see what falls."

Fans at North County bars on Thursday said they were also in the wait-and-see mode.

"This could be the Chargers' year," said Steve Venvord as he sipped beers with a friend at Rookies Sports Grille in Oceanside. Venvord, who predicted a 30-14 Chargers win Sunday, said he planned to watch the game and barbecue with friends at home.

Rookies owner Barry Penn said he expects a full house Sunday. With a capacity of 199, the venue commonly fills up on big game days. The sports bar boasts 106 televisions, including three 12-foot high-definition screens. The restaurant takes reservations, Penn said.

Some stores such as Chick's Sporting Goods in Oceanside geared up for Charger fever by creating displays of blue and gold sweat shirts, stadium blankets, hats, toys ---- even car mats.

Store officials ordered just about every Chargers-themed product they could before the season even started ---- more than in any previous year, said salesman Dusan Racic.

"We believe in the Chargers, and we believe that fans will stick with them no matter what," Racic said.

In preparation for Sunday's game, salesman Ryan Van De Wiele said he was bringing all of the Charger merchandise out on the sales floor at Chick's.

In contrast, Wal-Mart had a single small display of women's Charger T-shirts.

I hope.... wrote on Jan 3, 2008 11:12 PM:they do sell out the tickets so all Chargers fans can watch the game. That way when the team CHOKES, all the loyal fans can experience the disappointment that is the Chargers. I will laugh at all the long faces and little charger flags littering the gutters and trash bins of San Diego.

Melvin wrote on Jan 3, 2008 11:25 PM:Would it spoil some vast eternal plan if the Spanos family were to donate the remaining seats to charity so that the game could be on tv? I'm sure the firefighters and their families would enjoy the game this weekend with little chance of forest fires.

I agree with melvin wrote on Jan 4, 2008 12:14 AM:you know for as much as San Diego and the Chargers do for the Spanos family...you would think they would do what it takes to have their own team's fan's watch their beloved Chargers!! I am saying GO CHARGERS!!! Beat everybody, get to the Superbowl, WIN and get our Charger's Respect back!!!

esteabn wrote on Jan 4, 2008 6:25 AM:so what black it out than.

Problem is wrote on Jan 4, 2008 7:33 AM:that most people couldn't afford the gas to get to the stadium after buying overpriced tickets that enrich overblown owner and player egos. Chargers need to move to another city, then none of the playoff games will be blacked out.

Boo wrote on Jan 4, 2008 8:10 AM:Chargers are going to choke anyways, just like they do in EVERY playoff. I wouldn't pay $1.00 to see them play - well actually I would to see them lose!!!

Go Chargers! wrote on Jan 4, 2008 8:14 AM:If your not a fan keep your lame comments to yourself and stay off the comments page. Your welcome to get out of our town and go back to where you came from, whether it be back east, midwest or down south. Go Chargers!

Vistan wrote on Jan 4, 2008 8:15 AM:I would like to watch the game on TV. Win or lose, the players are still paid their millions, and a loss will not be a life-altering event for me. Blackout? It's more like blackmail!

Jo Anne wrote on Jan 4, 2008 8:17 AM:I heard a comment on the news that playoff tickets weren't available to the public. Now they want the fans to pick up the slack after making us feel left out. I agree - donate the tickets to the emergency response personnel that helped our county during the fires.

ALF wrote on Jan 4, 2008 8:23 AM:MOVE TO ANOTHER TOWN????? CHAREGRS FLAGS IN THE GUTTER??? YOU NEED TO MOVE OUT OF SD COUNTY, AND CHARGERS WILL NOT LOSE! I WISH THEY WOULD BUILD A WALL BLOCKING YOUR TYPES OUT OF OUR CITY, LETS GO SAN DIEGO!!!!! CHARGERS TO THE BOWL BABY!!!!!

Concerned-1 wrote on Jan 4, 2008 8:29 AM:Here's a question for fans in the Temecula Valley. If the game is blacked out in San Diego, will the LA TV market broadcast it on Channel 2? Seems like this has happened before and LA blacked us out because we were in the SD NFL market area. We have a lot of Charger fans here, and it would be a shame if we can't see the game.

the chargers.. wrote on Jan 4, 2008 9:20 AM:I wish they'd leave San Diego.. they suck and they will always suck, just like the idiot Charger fans..

Black out the game wrote on Jan 4, 2008 9:35 AM:I've lived in San Diego my entire life so don't tell me to go somewhere else! There are a many more important things to do in life than spend $100+ on a ticket to a football game. Just imagine the good that could be done by almost any charitable organization if everyone that bought a ticket to the game donated that money instead. Sports figures (actors/actresses too - I'm equal opportunity) are hugely overpaid. How can one person possibly be worth millions of dollars to play football or baseball or any sport?

Drew Badly wrote on Jan 4, 2008 9:38 AM:Consider the Ad revenues for a play-off game. You don't think the network will buy the remaining ticket to televise it?

All the Tickets wrote on Jan 4, 2008 9:40 AM:the city has purchased in the past wouldn't you think Spanos would step up and buy them? Oops, I thought he may care a little about the fans. How about Smith buy them with his new contract? Oops, he thinks the city should by them. Oh well

I agree with Melvin wrote on Jan 4, 2008 9:48 AM:the Spanos' can donate the remaining tickets so our First Responders who save our lives and quality of life on a daily basis can attend for free. I think it would be a small gift with great rewards. Go Chargers!

Karl wrote on Jan 4, 2008 9:49 AM:I doubt very seriously that the game will be blacked out. there's to much good will (Charger's, Viejas etc) to be had for buying out the remaining tickets. There is also advertising dollars to be had by the local affiliates. That being said, does anyone know the closest sports bar carrying an LA affiliate? San Onofre, Temecula? does anyone know?

Snoring wrote on Jan 4, 2008 9:56 AM:Here's what you'll miss if the game is balacked out: Tomlinson runs left. Tomlinson runs up the middle. Rivers passes incomplete. Punt.
Norv out-coached, Chargers done.

tom wrote on Jan 4, 2008 9:57 AM:donate the tickets to kid groups, oh, that probably would take some planning. You don't suppose a man listed in the 'richest' men in the world list would just eat the tickets, about 50k, for HIS fans do you. maybe chula vista would be interested. maybe 'alf' and 'go chargers' can get their buddies together and take out a second (or 3rd) on the ole rancho and then they can get drunk in the parking lot. go team!!! go go go

Concerned-1 wrote on Jan 4, 2008 10:22 AM:Karl, we get the LA feed in Temecula. Lot's of great places to watch the game: BJ's, Oggie's, Stadium Pizza (a true Charger atmosphere) and more. I also agree that market pressure will prevail and the game will air in SD. Peace, C-1.

Alf wrote on Jan 4, 2008 10:43 AM:"Concerned-1" at 10:16AM, the "ALF" at 8:23AM had the courtesy? to use all caps and didn't have a courteous sign-off. My view of the Chargers is one of disdain for them being "chokers" as well as their management being (I can not type exactly what I think of their underhander tactics). Regards, Alf.

Concerned-1 wrote on Jan 4, 2008 10:52 AM:Alf, sorry you feel that way about the Chargers. Teams are called choker until they win the big one. See BoSox. I'm with you though on their managment. But, all in all, I'm a fan and will support them until they are out. Go Chargers! Regards C-1.

Karl wrote on Jan 4, 2008 11:06 AM:Alf, also sorry you feel that way about my Chargers. I've been a fan since 1962 and saw my first game at San Diego High School. It was great back in those days. Big Bear Market gave away free tickets with grocery purchases. I had season tickets for 25 years (1971 to 1996) and was forced to give them up when "management" upgraded my seats to "gold". I had a decison, 8 football games a year or 365 days a year of Country Club Golf for the same price. The decision was very easy. I also saved enough at the Country Club to buy a big screen and surround system. I must love abuse, as witnessed by my 45 years with the Chargers and posting on this blog.

Ironhide wrote on Jan 4, 2008 11:11 AM:Drop the sky-high ticket prices and the tickets will sell no problem

Doesn't matter wrote on Jan 4, 2008 11:12 AM:It doesn't matter because even if the Chargers do make it through the next two games, they won't get past the undefeated Pats!!! And before the next person brings up Spygate, ask yourself this: Did they just go 16-0 because they taped defensive signals of the Jets? Or did they go 16-0 because they are actually the best team in the league? Rivers is gonna choke. He can't stand the pressure of the playoffs and LT knows it, but won't admit it.

Sweet wrote on Jan 4, 2008 11:12 AM:It is much too awesome to hear tales of ticket brokers stuck with tix that they must now sell at less than face value.

Alf wrote on Jan 4, 2008 11:43 AM:"Karl", if I had not cut short my stay in Zion National Park to go see the Chargers play the Superbowl, only to have them play like high-school third-stringers, I might have some team spirit. I interrupted God's country to watch rotting garbage. The Stadium thing is the owners/management, not the players, but they have not and apparently never rise above the status of "chokers" whose owners have no shame, no honor, no scruples, no loyalty and no semblance of decency. That is only my quite biased opinion based on over 30 years of observation. Regards, Alf.

Concerned-1 wrote on Jan 4, 2008 12:12 PM:This could all be a moot point within minutes. NCT Update??? Alf, you're not the only one with a Miami heartbreak story!!! And who can forget the Ice Bowl? Like Karl says, it's tough being a Bolts fan.

Problem is wrote on Jan 4, 2008 12:29 PM:that there aren't enough native born San Diegans left to fill the stadium. San Diego sports has been hijacked by fans from other parts of the country that came here on vacation and never left. They are all sitting at home cheering for their back home team and couldn't give a damn about the Chargers. Go Fresno Chargers!!!!!

Alf wrote on Jan 4, 2008 12:42 PM:From the little I know about Fresno, none of it any good, that sounds like the perfect place to which to sentence them. Well, almost perfect. The perfect place would be Baker, CA or Death Valley. No, Baker (the armpit of the known universe) and Death Valley (the hottest place in the known universe) have done nothing to warrant such abuse and punishment. Regards, Alf.

To Concerned-1 from Black Out wrote on Jan 4, 2008 1:18 PM:... The point I was trying to make is that the prices of tickets has risen to the point that the average person on the street can not afford one. Again, this applies to more than just sports teams. Look at what it costs to take a family of 4 to the movies. Almost $40 to get in then the ridiculous price the concession stands charge. Seriously - $4.00 for a soda that costs about 10 cents to produce? Free market is one thing - extortion from a captive market is another.

Charger bashers... wrote on Jan 4, 2008 2:18 PM:Just because you live in Los Angeles and are miserable bc your Raiders left town 30 years ago and you have to rot in the disease that is LA smog, doesn't mean you get anywhere by bashing the Chargers.

Concerned-1 wrote on Jan 4, 2008 3:17 PM:Sorry Black Out. You were out there in liberal left field with that: "think what we could do with that kind of money" thing. I totally agree that it is expensive to go to a game. But then it's only money. You can't take it with you (and the kids will just waste it). Have a good one, regards, C-1.

BDog wrote on Jan 4, 2008 3:44 PM:Wow I just think it would be good to watch the game no matter what! It amazes me that folks go this nuts over a team that obviously win or loose they still have fans and they play in a Great City. Get over it you stinken Raider fans!!!

NFL scam wrote on Jan 4, 2008 4:38 PM:The entire NFL is a tax payer scam. There are those that will watch on TV and there are those that will go to the thing. Always. Go Chargers! Go! - All the way to Chulajuana! and keep going!

esteban wrote on Jan 4, 2008 5:02 PM:They will lose anyway.

Roy wrote on Jan 4, 2008 5:50 PM:In the last 4 years I saw my season tickets go from the high seven hundreds to over sixteen hundred for the same pair of seats at the same lousy stadium for a team that has not even won a playoff game in that span of time. The rise in ticket prices would be justified if the Chargers had actually won something. To raise prices like something great had happened is a bad joke on San Diego Chargers fans. Do I think they will win Sunday? Not sure

Tensia wrote on Jan 4, 2008 7:27 PM:I consider a true Charger fan, even dough I moved out of state, and that will never change. A true fan stay and stick with the team no matter what!!!!. I got the NFL package just to see the games, and I will follow them where ever I go!!!!. GO CHARGERS!!

Larry wrote on Jan 4, 2008 7:58 PM:I am enjoying these last few Chargers games to the max. If this first playoff game is not televised, as I am sure it will be, I'll never take interest again. My take on this is that the broadcasters will pick up the remaining tickets. The revenue generated will far surpass the cost of a few tickets. My only question would be to Mr. Spanos : do not the people of San Diego deserve at least a TV broadcast of the first playoff game?.. come on, the vast majority of San Diegans could only wish for your riches , most cannot afford a family of 4 outing to a game.

Padre Fan wrote on Jan 4, 2008 9:50 PM:Chargers may win this Sunday but won't get much farther than that. Hopefully this Los Angeles team can finally go back to where they belong. There's only ONE San Diego team with LOYAL fans....that's right baby SAN DIEGO PADRES. Is it almost February!!
