Inland Community News Briefs: Take a hike at Daley Ranch

ESCONDIDO ---- Free, guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch.

All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least a two liters of water and wear a hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths younger than 18 must be with an adult. No pets are allowed. Meet at La Honda Drive entrance.

Reservations are requested. Call (760) 839-4680. A shuttle with handicapped accessibility runs Sundays.

  • 8 a.m. today: Join naturalist Michelle Capodice for a leisurely three-mile hike around Boulder Loop. She will talk about the local reptiles.

  • 9 a.m. today: Naturalist Katya McLane will lead a moderately-paced four-mile hike to Stanley Peak.

  • 3 p.m. Jan. 8: Join Capodice for a leisurely 1.8-mile round-trip hike to the Ranch House.

  • 9 a.m. Jan. 9: Naturalist Irene O'Neill will talk about being safe as a senior and/or beginner hiker on this short, slow-paced hike. The hike is geared for beginners or those who have not hiked for awhile due to injury, illness or other reason.

  • 8 a.m. Jan. 11: Join naturalist Kathleen Flanagan for a strenuous, fast-paced seven-mile "Mystery Tour."

    Art demo slated for Jan. 9

    ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Art Association will host an art demonstration by award-winning watercolorist Rise Parberry at 7 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Joslyn Senior Center, 210 Park Ave.

    Take the challenge to lose weight

    ESCONDIDO ---- The Palomar Family YMCA will offer a six-week weight-loss team challenge from Jan. 14 through Feb. 22. Teams of five to six people will be coached by a YMCA personal trainer twice a week, and the team with the greatest combined average percentage of body weight lost will win a credit or refund for the program cost.

    City to offer classes for preschoolers

    ESCONDIDO ---- The city's Community Services Department will offer preschool classes for children ages 3 to 5, with parent participation required.

  • Winter Wonderland Fun will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Jan. 16. In this arts and crafts class, children can make snow cones, Chinese New Year lanterns, snowflake mobiles and bird feeders.

  • Valentine Cards and Cookies will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 13. Children can Valentine cards and decorate cookies to give to their loved ones.

    PFLAG chapter to meet

    RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The San Diego North County Inland chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays), a parent-led support group, will meet at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8 in the Community Room of the San Diego National Bank building, 16789 Bernardo Center Drive. Entry is through the double doors facing Bernardo Center Drive.

    Learn to bake challah bread

    Travel club to meet Jan. 11

    Brandeis Food Adventures Group to meet

    RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Brandeis Food Adventures Group will hold its first meeting at 1 p.m. Jan. 15 in the multipurpose room at Remington Club Phase I, 16925 Hierba Drive.

    Dr. Pat W. Swanson of UC Davis will review studies of obesity in San Diego County, as well as discuss food insufficiency. She heads up the nutrition and consumer/families outreach in the county for the University Extension program.

    AAUW to host brown-bag lunch

    RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Rancho Bernardo branch of the American Association of University Women will meet Jan. 15 at the RB Swim & Tennis Club, 16955 Bernardo Oaks Drive. A brown-bag lunch will begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by dessert at 1 and a program at 1:30. Judy G. Schmude, recently retired chief executive officer of Centre for Health Care in Poway, will discuss women's health issues.

    Ramona Forum to meet Jan. 15

    RAMONA ---- Bill McDannell will speak at a meeting of the Ramona Forum at 6 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Sizzler restaurant, 344 Main St.

    McDannell walked across the country to protest the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A question-and-answer session will follow his talk.

    Divorce recovery program offered

    RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Church at Rancho Bernardo will host a 14-week divorce recovery program for adults called "Divorce Care" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays starting Jan. 28 at the church, 11740 Bernardo Plaza Court.

    The program is designed to help participants grow through their divorce as they go through it. The series is also for those who are still suffering with unresolved issues from a past divorce.

    Metabolic typing diet is the topic

    RANCHO PENASQUITOS ---- Reed Davis, CCN, director of the San Diego Natural Health and Fitness Center, will present "Metabolic Typing Diet" from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Rancho Penasquitos branch of the San Diego County Library, 13330 Salmon River Road.

    Chamber of commerce creates new award

    FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce has created a new award called the Pinnacle Award to recognize exceptional members of the community who sustain significant support for multiple community projects and organizations over a number of years.

    The award will allow the residents of the "Friendly Village" to show their ongoing appreciation to those leaders who repeatedly and selflessly give of themselves, whether personally or financially, to help make Fallbrook the exceptional community that it is.

    The Pinnacle Award will be presented for the first time at the Chamber's 63rd annual Recognition Banquet on Jan. 19 at the San Luis Rey Officers Club, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, where more than 200 guests are expected.

    In addition to the Pinnacle Award, the chamber will present other community awards, including Citizen of the Year, Large Business, Small Business, Chamber Foundation, Ingold Community Builder and Lifetime Achievement.

    Book talk planned for Jan. 10

    FALLBROOK ---- The Friends of the Fallbrook Library will sponsor a Book Talk at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 10 in the board room of the Fallbrook Public Utility District building at 990 E. Mission Road.

    The featured selection will be "The Face of a Stranger" by Anne Perry, the first in the William Monk Victorian London mystery book series. The discussion will be led by Anna O'Brien.

    The book club meets the second Thursday of each month from September through June. No reservations are required and attendees need not be members of the Friends organization. Other selections on this year's schedule include "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" by J.K. Rowling, "Run" by Ann Patchett and "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See.
